We've never had any trouble with these regular updates before, they just load up when you shut down your 'puter.

For the last couple of weeks, however, it's been trying to do an update which doesn't. It just says don't switch off, it will shut down automatically when it's run, but even if we leave it for hours and hours it doesn't finish. We have to power down, then next time we switch on it has to do an error check first.

What's going on? And what can we do to sort this out? We've run disc scan and defrag, which didn't throw up anything, although the defrag took a long time.

We're not very technosavvy, so answers in words of one sill a bull please.

The reason is most likely to be that Microsoft no longer support XP. Stupid, when Vista is rubbish.

The reason is certainly not because MS no longer support XP. XP mainstream support finished this year, but extended support continues until 2014 - that means security patches continue. The updates G-Force is getting are updates for XP or they wouldn't be downloaded; MS expects them to work! I use XP/Pro and install updates every week.

G-Force - Run Microsoft Update (probably: Start/All Programs and Microsoft Update should be near the top of the list). Update should open IE and when it's loaded click on the link marked Review Your Update History. In the Status column you should have a red circle with a cross in against the updates that failed. Post a list of what's failing and then we can see if there's a reason. (The only major failure I've ever had was to do with a NET framework update - the update repeatedly failed. In the end I had to remove all the previous NET versions and reinstall them in order to fix it. This is probably not your problem - that update was some time ago - but if we know what's failing we may be able to get an idea why).

If none of the updates are marked as failing (probably means it never got to a point where it could mark it), then from Windows Update select press the Express button (this will pick up security and critical updates). If there are more than one updates in the list it finds, uncheck all but the first and try to install it. If that installs, repeat, again selecting just one update to install. This way when it fails you will know which update is causing the problem.

(You can unselect it and choose not to be told again, but that is probably not a good idea; these updates generally fix serious flaws and you don't want to reject them forever without a good reason. When you find out which one is causing the problem, post it here and we'll see what we can find out).

We had this problem with a Dell Latitude laptop. We turned off the computer and turned it back on. Then we went to shut it down. When the shutdown menu came up we selected the option which allowed us to select which updates to install. We held the computer to one or two updates at a time and, when it hung up again, we repeated the process and told it not to install the one which caused the hangup. End of problem.

Yeah, I have a Vista machine and an XP machine. They both run well, but they are configured to regularly update and I don't have internet at home. So when I take on out to a wifi coffeeshop it'll automatically absorb the latest updates from the Windows mothership and it regularly attempts to do an operating system update. It does not usually ask for permission, and it does a shutdown/ restart on me as well.

If like me you do not regularly update you can get in a position where it does not do the updates in order, and this can cause problems. You should do like EBarnacle suggests but pay attention to whether or not it has 'missed' an intermediate update. This could have caused a hiccup.

You can also email microsoft for help, or my favorite volunteer online help site: www.techguy.com.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks, Mick (and others). We'll try what you suggest and see what happens, but not until after Bromyard.

From what I've seen the updates usually have a number with a "KB" prefix. A search for that number, either on the MS site or with google, often comes up with useful advice.

I was having difficulties getting updates to install and finally followed one of those knowledge base crumb trails and ended up renaming two files as it suggested. Then I wasn't able to open my desktop programs. I slept on in and in the morning went into my other computer (also XP Pro) and copied those two files and put them in where the renamed files were. It worked fine and would now accept the updates (including the very large service pack 3). Now it does all of the things it was supposed to do but couldn't. I can't tell you what the corrupt files were called, but the knowledge base gave several options. I chose the easiest (I didn't do the "regedit" version).

If you'll post the error message I may have my notes from that last fix and can at least tell you how to proceed on that particular error, if it is the same.

Well now, we've looked at Update History as MCP suggested, but the two failed updates were both ages ago:

20/11/2007 - Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP;

24/09/2008 - Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806).

We don't really know what any of this means, and there have been 69 successful updates since then. We were certainly running IE7 without problem, but have now switched to using Firefox (IE is still loaded).

Clicking on 'Express' in Windows Update seems to show only one update waiting (listing six 'enhancements').

If anyone can offer some simple-to-follow help on this, we would be more than grateful.

G-Force

Can you give the number associated with the waiting update - KB.... Then we can look and see what it is and if there are any known problems with installing it.

The fact that updates failed at some point doesn't mean they didn't get installed later - you can check that in your history. The fact you're using IE7 suggests that the IE7 install failure was later fixed. It may be true with the .NET Framework (although in my case a failed install of one .NET Framework didn't cause me any problems until a later version tried to install and kept failing. I had to remove all the .NET installs and reinstall all of them).

But let's see what your waiting update is first.

Mick
