Subject: BS: Augh! Christmas music already! (10 Sept) From: SharonA Date: 10 Sep 09 - 07:36 PM I'm working on the computer with the TV on in the background.... and I've JUST seen and heard my first "holiday" commercial of the season. It was a commercial for booking your winter cruise ship vacation now, BUT they had the sleigh bells ringing and "Jingle Bells" playing IN EARLY SEPTEMBER. The neighborhood kids just went back to school TODAY. Fer kee-rhyssakes, it's still SUMMER -- the equinox isn't for two weeks yet!!!! Aaaaauuuuuuuggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrrrr......... Am I the first to hear those dreaded sleigh bells?? Tell us about your first sighting/hearing of Christmas commercialism this year. |

Subject: RE: BS: Augh! Christmas music already! (10 Sept) From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Sep 09 - 09:56 AM Sharon, the unspoken message of the commercial was 'Book a cruise and escape Christmas. Hurry because space is limited.' Was anybody watching the TV? If not, it's worth the effort to go turn it off. Those babies use a lot of electricity. |

(10 Sept) From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 11 Sep 09 - 01:50 PM "British Home Store has chocolate advent calendars on the shelves already." I HATE BHS in Chelmsford at Xmas - you can hardly squeeze in the shop because they blockade the *entire* entrance area with Xmas tatty stuff! |

Oh, don't get us started...! Too small cups, a single serve pack of coffee, and a couple of sugar lumps PLUS a needlessly massive box covered in gold ribbons.. yours for just &28.99! Three anorexically skinny bottles of cooking oil (containing some vague herbal confetti) yours for just 31.99! A jar of jam, and a teaspoon to serve it with (revolutionary notion that one!) £12.99! General random plastic shite £15.99 Other random shite £19.99 OK so I'm making up the prices, but then so do they.. |

Subject: RE: BS: Augh! Christmas music already! (10 Sept) From: Rapparee Date: 11 Sep 09 - 02:45 PM You people aren't yet in the Christmas spirit of loving, giving, caring, and spending, are you? |

Subject: RE: BS: Augh! Christmas music already! (10 Sept) From: SharonA Date: 11 Sep 09 - 04:30 PM Liz the Squeak and Sandra in Sydney: I don't think that making Christmas decorations/crafts counts as commercialism. Quite the opposite -- it's anti-commercialism! You go, girls; keep up the good work. Same goes for Rapaire (except for the "girl" part?) -- Christmas-season charity doesn't count as commercialism. Not sure why you're waiting till Christmas to give those poor, cold Kentuckians some coats, though. Brrrr.... ':-/ VirginiaTam: Love that word "manky"! So true about the chocolates. They didn't have chocolate Advent calendars when I was a kid, just the paper cards with windows, but I remember that I could never resist opening more than one window a day. Can't imagine that the chocolate behind the last window stays there that long, either! |

Ditto that thought SharonA! Homemade and authentic Christmas, which genuinely echoes the spirit of the season, is what it's all about. |

Subject: RE: BS: Augh! Christmas music already! (10 Sept) From: Rapparee Date: 11 Sep 09 - 04:36 PM Because we do every year as Christmas nears. We do other things in other seasons. Besides -- it ain't all that cold in Kentucky in Spring, Summer, and Fall. Trust me on that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Augh! Christmas music already! (10 Sept) From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Sep 09 - 10:26 PM Craft stores start selling patterns for christmas stuff mid-year. And we collectors of patterns rake them up, along with patterns in magazines & books & create large collections of patterns! Which we'll never be able to use in our lifetimes. Since 1987 I've made decorations each year using different techniques - they make good pressies. A few pics here in Craft album My students are busily stitching away, one is very like me - she is vacuuming up patterns, dunno whether she can use them all, but she's making a valiant effort. We're having fun sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Augh! Christmas music already! (10 Sept) From: Rapparee Date: 11 Sep 09 - 11:50 PM I got my first Christmas present today and I'm gonna get another early next week when my new computer is ready. So far Christmas has cost me over US $1,400, and I haven't yet bought anything for my wife. But she's a good sport and won't mind if I give her only a packet of needles or something. No, maybe something that she can't puncture me with.... |
