Fairbanks Daily News-Miner:   "We made a terrible mistake...Mrs. Palin, please accept this apology from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner".

Why?   The paper had printed a picture of the ex-Gov on the front page:   

Caption:   A broad in Asia

But the apology itself has told a lot more people about this--like me, for instance--than had ever heard of the paper's actual sin.

Maybe Ebbie can tell us if this really was a mistake.

But that's the beauty and glory of a public apology:   you can repeat what you supposedly are sorry for.

For those who remember the excesses of Mr Joh Bjelke-Petersen, an erstwhile Premier of Queensland not known for moderate or balanced responses..... he had been a grower of peanuts when he entered politics and was proud of using his pilot's licence.

The only time I can recall a Letter to the Editor appearing on the front page of any major Oz paper was one in a May 1973 (as I remember it) issue of the Courier Mail, Brisbane's daily and a tabloid. The letter complained of the lack of correct grammar (incorrect placing of a comma) in a front page article published a few days before.

The offending piece referred 'to "that well-known flying peanut farmer, Joh Bjelke-Petersen" when everyone knew that it should have read "that well-known flying peanut, farmer Joh Bjelke-Petersen".'

I've treasured the memory ever since.

The News-Miner is not among the newspapers I commonly read, Ron Davies, but I did a little reading and it appears that the managing editor really does regret letting that caption through. (Makes me wonder though if the caption writer wasn't given the go ahead at the time.) He may have taken a lot of flak.

I have some friends who live just outside Fairbanks and they like the area. But, my friend says, in all other areas he has lived he is considered a political moderate. In Fairbanks, however, he says, they regard him as a bleeding liberal.

On the nature of rumor and apology

After a slander or vicious rumor gains enough speed and inertia over time by being repeated, magnified and enhanced out of sheer imagination spawned by fear or ego, it has a life of its own. It gets re written and retold until the flaws fall away and it is seems completely believable.

The rumor starter is usually protected by folks not wanting to ask or tell the subject of the rumor anything about what they heard.
People who believe the rumor do not want to disbelieve or even learn the truth if presented to them. Why? Because that would put them in the uncomfortable position of having to admit they were wrong or their source was wrong.

Should you demand someone tell you the rumor or ask the suspected rumor stater for an apology? It would be tantamount to demanding they apologize for their behavior, when all they did was listen and act according to information they were told..

When people and their families are truly wronged or victimized they are in the position to forgive people who do not want to apologize.

If you forgive these people anyway it is kind of a passive aggressive thing to do.
To forgive those who invent or repeat malicious speech and behavior is likely to anger them and cause them to dig in their heels deeper.
After all, the rumor was meant to raise the prestige of the teller in comparison to "the other".

Even the most Christian person would not want to admit to their doubt or their belief in rumor. They do not want to apologize. They do not want to be forgiven. They would prefer to grant forgiveness to those who were wronged only if it suited their purposes.

At the heart of all these squabbles that can destroy lives and families is fear, and the unholy practice of trying to do good by doing bad.

The only way to do good is by doing good. Unfortunately, this is not the way politics , religion or the consequential strangers in our lives behave.

Doing good, to do good, is still too radical a concept for the human race.

Palin's ghost writer - Sounds lovely. (By the way, I realize how catty I am being. :) Last night David Letterman quipped that he had an advance copy of Palin's book but "quit halfway through."

To forgive someone just means to let go of your own toxic anger that you carry inside yourself Donuel, so you can get on with something positive instead of carrying the anger endlessly. It does not mean that the ones you forgive are absolved or washed clean of whatever they did...that's up to them and how they choose to deal with their own responsibilities. If they don't deal with their own karma eventually, it will deal with them.

Oh, as far as forgiving other people in the sense of openly telling them you forgive them....well, that's only useful if they are genuinely contrite and already desirous of forgiveness....as can sometimes happen. In that case, it's very beneficial to both you and them to tell them they are forgiven. Otherwise, you're definitely better off to keep your forgiveness quietly to yourself! It won't be apreciated if it isn't wanted. ;-) And in that case, it's you whom the process of giving forgiveness benefits, not the other person. It's like shedding a heavy load.

And then there's the challenge of forgiving yourself. For many people that might be the toughest one of all.

I hope people have checked out Ebbie's link to the "Alaska Ear"-- I think we owe a big debt to her for that.   Particularly intriguing, I thought, was the story about Sarah's part in a forthcoming movie--as a comic element.

You'd think that when the very mention of your name is a laugh line, your political career is over.   But we'll see how true that truism turns out to be.
