Well, I know that the Virginia Republican Party is puffing out their chests this morning because a 70 year tradition has been continued of electing governors from the party that does not hold the White House, and, well, the Repubs should be happy...

Problem is that over the last two Dem administrations the Repubs in the General Assmbly in Richmond have blocked every attempt to raise money for roads and Virginia's roads, especially in NoVa, suck...

Now it's going to be very interesting because Governor-Elect McDonnald has promised to fix the roads???

Hmmmmmmm??? Where's he going to get the dough??? Beg it off Obama??? I think not... No, now that the Repubs will have both the legislature and the Governorship I predict that one of two things will occur:

1. The roads won't get fixed and fall into further ruin, or...

... 2. The Repubs will decide, like during the Bush administration, that being fiscal hawks only applies when there is a Democrat in the Governor's Mansion...

Either way, oughtta be very interesting...

BTW, I voted for the Dem but am delighted to see the Repubs stuck with these roads... Absolutely delighted... Have at it, boys...

B~

I agree about the roads. They're a mess. I'm not happy about McDonald being elected. He's very conservative - a graduate of Pat Robertson's University. Not good.

Pat Robertson's University; that has to almost qualify as an oxymoron. When GWB first started campaigning the first time, two things set off the first serious alarms in my mind. One was that one of, if not the first, major appearance, was at Bob Jones University; the other was his absolute assertion that Texas has never executed an innocent man, against a backdrop of substantial numbers of death row inmates being exonerated all over the country,

Here's a link to Regent's University . I'm not anti-Christian, but Pat Robertson espouses a very conservative doctrine that quite frankly scares me. Read all about him on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_robertson .

Scary.

When I lived with my family in Virginia in the early 50s, Virginia had a stated policy of 'pay as you go' road building. So many of the minor roads were narrow but blacktopped and pretty well maintained.

Has that policy changed?

Robertson was just in the news over Halloween candy.... the evil conspiracy of satan to get children through sugar, because the candy has been quote "prayed over by witches" so that evil demons and curses live in the candy. (google "Robertson Halloween candy")

This reminds me of Sarah Palin and her affiliation with the minister who proclaimed they were driving witches out of his African parish.

Nutty and scary.

Pat Robertson is a very sick and evil individual, imo. He had everyone up in arms last week telling his followers that all of the Halloween candy in the USA had been cursed by witches and demons. What's really sad and stupid is it was so entertaining it was on all of the news outlets which makes folks think everyone believes him.

I wish the media would take yesterday's elections for the local things they were, by and large, and quit saying it's a "wake-up call" for Obama. I do think the Dems didn't get out en force as they did for Obama and I wish they had.

I knew all about Pat Robertson that I need to know some 30 years back. I was working at a retirement home and many of the oldsters watched religious channels. One of the popular programs was Robertson's Praise the Lord, or something like that. Inevitably I saw some of it.

One day he had a guest on the show who was talking about the color 'pink' draining the life spirit from a man. He said, You can prove it for yourself. If I put this cloth over your arm and tug on it, you won't be able to lift your arm. Guaranteed. Here, hold out our arm:

And he draped the pink cloth over Robertson's arm. Robertson put on a face of wonderment, astonished that he couldn't lift his arm.

The next time I saw my brother in law, a Pat Robertson devotee, and said, Allen, let me try something. I'll put this pink pillowslip over your arm and you won't be able to lift your arm.

And I did, and then I said: OK. Now try to raise your arm.

I held on to the pillowslip and tried to pull his arm down but he raised it easily.

Whether Robertson was that susceptible to suggestion or blatantly dishonest I don't know. I suspect dishonesty.

Well, Eb...

Virginia is still purdy much pay-as-you-go... The problem lies in that the Repub. General Assemebly absolutely won't allow any tax increases or fees to pay for much of anything... The last 2 Dem. governors have spent most of their time chopping budgets... Our mental health programs are a farce... Our roads are terrible... Even Wes Ginny has better roads... North Carolina's roads are 10 times better than Virginia...

So it will be interesting to see if the Repub General Assembly will provide the new Repub governpr the resour4ces to live up to his promise to fix the roads...

It might be worthwhile mentioning that in Virginia, for the last eight presidential elections, in the following governor's race, Virginia has consistently voted in a governor of the party opposite whoever became president. To have done otherwise would have been a big departure from the last pattern of the last eight election cycles.

Well Bobert I beat you on calling the election and on Harry Byrds "Pay As You Go" 40 year machine (see "A Small but Significant" thread.

But if you'll recall it was the Virginian equivalent of the "Road to Nowhere" Route 58, along the VA NC boarder, that finally allowed Fairfax County to orient the vote to the Republicans. And the former Democrat Speaker of the House of Delegates begged the Republicans not to treat them as the Dems had done the Republicans in the previous 40 years.

At this point Fairfax would be the 44th State in population (if it was a State). And McDonnell was raised in Fairfax.

And the Obamamaniacs completely missed the fact that during the Tea Bag/Party rally in DC, three polls found that over 60% of the attendees were from VA and 63-67% of them had voted for Obama. Yet talking heads and MudCatters were calling them "Racist".

I was on a plane when I read that and smiled the whole trip...

For the sake of internal consistency, this sentence should read thus:

"And the former Democrat Speaker of the House of Delegates begged the Republics not to treat them as the Dems had done the Republics in the previous 40 years."

Even as a Democrat, I was not happy with Deeds as a candidate. He didn't even make much of an effort, it seemed to me. (I was not overwhelmed with McDonald, either.)

Virginia always has this split personality about what it wants.

*shrug*...maybe Bobert will get some roads fixed.

DougR, do you have something specific in mind that you need me to clarify from one or more of my previous posts, or was that just a generic sort of "Huh?" that is not connected to anything I have said in this thread? In other words, in response to your response, my response is... Huh?

"Huh" more adequately expresses Doug's in-depth understanding of the issues.

and his Yes we do have the best health care system in the world.
equally adequately demonstrates his disconnect from any semblance of reality.

Ignore him.

A health care system must include more than technology. It should include delivery and here we don't have the best system in the U.S. How many people have insurance companies allowed to die?

The word "delegates" appears in the post I was quoting from. I had nothing to do with putting that word in there. I was just repeating it.

It was the poster's inappropriate us of the term "Democrat" that I was pointing out. The way the poster was using the word "Democrat" is the equivalent of someone saying "Republic" instead of "Republican".

This is how Claymore's post should have read...

"And the former Democratic Speaker of the House of Delegates begged the Republicans not to treat them as the Dems had done the Republicans in the previous 40 years."

Carol,

I suspect you are missing my grammerical point. Which would you say, the "Leader of the Democratics; or the Leader of the Democrats", as opposed to the infinitely consistant "Leader of the Rupublicans".

Such consistancies being the hobgoblin of little minds ;)

But I would like someone who has access to something like the rabid left Washington Post, and for some sense of balance, the WSJ, style books for the PC usage of the words.

Doug, it all depends on what you use as a yardstick. For the wealthy and well insured we do have a great health care system. Now, if you can just ignore the millions who don't have insurance, who can't get insurance and those who develop a bad disease, which gets them dumped by the greedy profit motivated system our system sucks!

It is my firm belief from ehat I have seen with my own eyes that we should have the sdame system they have in the UK. Everyone is covered, no one can be dumped and if you are over 60 you no longer pay into the system. That would save me thousands a year in co pays and I have good insurance!

Nope, Claymore. Can't weasel out of that one so easily. I would say "leader of the Democrats", but not "Democrat leader". Democratic speaker is correct, Democrat speaker is not. If you're not one of the small minds who like to misuse the word Democrat as a form of insult (always using Democrat even when Democratic is the correct term), then I'm sure your incorrect usage was just a typo. If you only use "Democrat" even when "Democratic" is the correct term, then you are just being petty.

We have some of the best health care technology and know how in the world.

That is very different from having the best health-care system measured by the balance and breadth of health care across the society as a whole.

Conflating these two is scurrilous, an attempt to pass off one thing as another and misrepresent the situation.

"sys·tem (sstm)
n.
1. A group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a complex whole."

The United States has some of the best hospitals and doctors in the world. It does not have a health care system. Saying that the US has the best health care system is like saying that the inventory of parts in a Chevy dealership is a Corvette.
