Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith - November 2009 From: Zany Mouse Date: 11 Nov 09 - 01:54 PM Although I didn't know her as a person I do remember her occasional visits to barnsley Folkclub in years gone by. Fabulous voice. When I get up there I'm sure I'll be greeted by an amazing Folk Club In The Clouds. So many good voices gone over the last few years. Blessings Rhiannon and Mick |

Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith From: GUEST,Kath Reade Date: 11 Nov 09 - 09:42 AM Mary and I were blues / folk buddies in the 1970s. I really admired her singing. She once suggested we get a duo together but sadly I couldn't do it at the time. My husband Paul used to book her regularly at the folk clubs he ran - The Railway at Sale and The Wheatsheaf at Hollinwood. People used to come specially to hear her. I am glad we have her record. So sorry to hear this news, and would be grateful if we could get info about when her funeral will be. Blessings to Mary x |
Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith From: GUEST,saffron summerfield Date: 11 Nov 09 - 09:28 AM This is terrible news. I just can't believe it. She was an amazing singer songwriter and I am so proud that she recorded her only album on my label. I knew Mary had been ill on and off for the past five years or so. I had kept in touch through her partner Fran. Mary often laughingly told me she wanted to be a recluse, but those buggers out there wouldn't let her. You will be sadly missed, but your voice will be there for those of us who loved you. RIP kid. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith From: Vin2 Date: 11 Nov 09 - 09:24 AM My god that's sad news. Not seen Mary perform for many years but have very fond memories from way back as Derek Schofield and Raggytash have said. Manchester's Black Lion club with Pete Farrow, the Unicorn and Ring 'o' Bells in Middleton spring to mind. Mary had a fantastic bluesy voice and have a tape of her in my collection which i too must transfer to cd at some point. One of the legends of the Manchester folk scene. Sleep in peace Mary! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith From: Raggytash Date: 11 Nov 09 - 05:51 AM Mary was one of the finest singers to grace the Manchester folk scene of the 70's. The voice was like gravel but absolutely brilliant, it's only recently I've transported her album from vinyl to CD. Sleep well Mary you gave pleasure to many many people with your singing |
Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith From: GUEST,John J Date: 11 Nov 09 - 05:32 AM This is a shock, I had no idea she was ill. My sincere condolences to her family and those close to her. JJ |
Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith From: Brian Peters Date: 11 Nov 09 - 05:14 AM This is a great shame. Mary in her magnificent prime was a real force of nature, and later I found her to be a very nice person as well. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Mary Asquith From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 11 Nov 09 - 04:50 AM very sad news. The memories of Mary take me back to Manchester folk clubs in the early 70s, especially those run by Harry Boardman. Mary was a great contributor to the eclectic mix of music at the time.
