It was on the new BBC4 Channel and the programme was called Celtic Connections.

For fun, I've tried inserting the word "You're" in front of the line "Only a woman" when singing this song. For some strange reason some people who otherwise seemed to think the song was great didn't really like this !

Actually, neurons are connected to every muscle in the body and the heart being a muscle, it also has neurons connected to it.
A woman's heart is no different from a men's heart in it's physiology. There is however a big difference in development of the emotional intelligence between men and women, which is ofcourse seated in the brain. Hence, 'a woman's brain' would have been a better title ..........

I don't know about anyone else, but I interpreted that line: "As only a woman's heart can know" as saying knowing in a way that is unique to a woman: i.e., not that only women can know such pain, but that being a woman (including the experience of childbirth, or simply the knowledge that you can have children, among other things), gives us a certain perspective of grief and lonlieness that men do not have.

Not that that perspective is richer or poorer or better or worse than a man's, just that it is a woman's perspective, and that it's not the same as a man's.

Oh, and on a slight tangent: as I understand it (and I could be mistaken, but I heard this in a radio interview with a cardiologist), a heart is slightly different than say, the muscles in our arms and legs in that there are neurons connected directly to it -- and that there are neurons also connected to our stomachs... makes me wonder if that is the subconscious origins of phrases like: "deciding with the heart" or "Gut decision"

Does anybody know if there is a written version of the music with chords and musical notes, so that a classical musician can make sense of it and reproduce it without having to listen to eleanor singing it? I'm a Dutch woman singing in a dutch "irish" choir with a director who has no knowledge of folkmusic at all. I would appreciate any help in finding a copy of the music sheet. Thanks a lot.

The follow up is being advertised on the Radio here, so it must be out. I haven't heard it yet.

The first one was very popular and helped along the careers of a number of the featured singers (and one tunes only musician Sharon Shannon), so it wasn't at all a bad thing apart from that (IMO) awful title track.

I'm told that one of the male musicians on the tour made up a parody to be sung in a deep bass voice -

The album was seen as a way of showcasing a generation of women Irish singers who sing in a folk or near-folk idiom. Some or all of the featured singers did a tour at the time. There is talk of a 'ten-years-on'-type follow-up album, but not sure if it is materialising.

Rumour has it, the record company insisted that Mary Black should do the harmonies. They figured Elonor (who was rather obscure at that point) wouln't bring it to the top of the charts alone.... But I agree to the quality, arguably one of the 10 best folk CDs of the decade (does anybody see a possible tread here?)

There's an "Only A Woman's Heart" written by Elanor McEvoy on the Album "A Woman's Heart" - a terrific collection of tunes by various artists (Maura O'Connell, Frances Black, Dolores Keane, among others). She sings it with Mary Black on the CD. I've heard it on another album as well (a Mary Black album I think), just can't remember them at the moment.

The limited information on the CD says (Eleanor McEvoy - Little Rock Music) says it was recorded specifically for that album.

Is that the one you were looking for? There are probably others of the same title.
