Although I confess, to have speed read most of the intervening posts. I'm pretty keen on Jane Austen, myself. And Thomas Hardy - although Jude the Obscure, the last one I've read, was a bit dense at times.

The cocktail was working its magic. About me, the various denizens of this tranquil oasis moved pleasantly, touching one another on the arm and smiling gently. The place had the ambiance of a recovery room at a Lobotomy Outpatient Clinic, where the patients were being gently leveraged toward a sense of well being through a clever mix of vodka and oxycontin. I rose and crossed the rose-shaded carpet to a large picture window. This gave out onto a veranda where daffodils were emerging from a band of loose soil on the verge, and beyond one could see a garden path that led through a formal garden. This garden was centered on a gazebo, the columns of which were circled with wisteria vines and fat, closed buds, which I knew would soon burst into aromatic blossoms, bringing the bees like horny frat boys to plunder their treasure.
Farther down the slope, a long cavalcade of trees seemed to be masking a long tossing brook, whose occasional falls threw sunlit droplets into the air. I was suddenly aware of a distant figure, dark and almost hidden against the trunks of these trees. This figure stood as if gazing at something in the grass by the arbor. Then it stood and began gesticulating wildly. I looked about me to see if any one else was witnessing this odd apparition. The woman from the couch was standing near, gazing in the same direction, a smile displaying teeth which had been whitened with an aggressive chemical treatment. "Do you see.." I started, but looking back, the figure had disappeared.
"Lovely, lovely day," she said, and then sighed deeply.

She was indeed and hence is why she is a humungous heroine if ever I needed one to look up and aspire to. The day when all argument and disagreement could be handled with such taste and manners is sadly gone. We should mourn it. Not one swear word issued in the whole of her books and yet her put downs must be the greatest of invention. No lack of subtlety in compliments or insults. So good was she at it that many who were actually being insulted - albeit with great manners and decorum - were too thick to know they were being put down.

The level of romance that is imbued with such delightful intercourse as was her style sends shivers down my spine. She was, and remains by her popularity of style, one of the greatest novelists. I so aspire to her acuity of tongue and intelligence of sarcasm. Alas, I am too dull to get close.

What sweet felicity it would have been to have Miss Lizzie among our company but I am afraid it seems she has 'gone off on one' and not even noticed our deliberations about her. I shall not press to long on the matter lest it hastens her belief in it being mere drivel. One can only lead so many horses to water....

I see you have already welcomed Mr E.J. and, even though Prestham-om-Glass could be misconstrued as a dangerous place to be, I am sure he may yet find traquility if he goes to Oldham. Altrincham could be too traumatic a journey. The gentlemen must construe such happenstance as whether it is risque or not. I am not qualified to witness such activities, with some glee I might add, but once Mr E.J. feels adjusted perhaps he too will find peace in the valley.

Tamara, I must wish you a fair morrow as I am required to go visit acquaintances tonight who are having a ball in fun's honour. It will be a late business, I dare say, and am expected to arrive home in the early morning rain. Bluddy's seething wiv anger, but I arsed the Missus and she gave me the evenin' off, so he can't do much about it.   

'E keeps muttering about cucumbers, crumpet and tarts, but I told 'im.."Now you listen, 'ere, Bluddy! I is sick to deaf of your ramblin's and rumblin's. I ain't been out of this 'ere damn kitchen for weeks now. Besides, there's a band playing down there, a threesome twosome, or sumfink, sounds a bit bloody dodgy to me, but Josiah tells me they're good to dance to.

I told Bluddy 'e should go too, and that seemed to keep 'im quiet for a minute or two, took his rovin' eyes orf me bristols too, fank gawwwd. He went orf into 'is parlour muttering that 'e just might do that, 'e just might. Said he knows an Ol' Girl called Miss Diane who might be good fer a bit of a dance and a quick slap and tickle, as she's that sorta lady, 'pparently.

Ooh la bloody la!

Shhhh...don't go tellin' anyone, but..talk in the kitchen is she's a snoo'y ol' cow, so I'm gonna keep me eyes well peeled for 'er later on...see for meself.

Well hurry up you lot, I ain't got all day yer know. I got fires to dampen down, all yer posh crockery to wash and dry, pillows to tidy...and if I get be'ind, well, Bluddy gets me be'ind, and not only that, but he gets me be'ind and gives it a bloody good smackin', which makes his eyes light up like the devil 'iself!

I entered the thread and was immediately lulled into a sleepy torpor by the general atmosphere of benignity. Finding an empty spot on a pleasant and comfortable green couch, I did not decline the cocktail that was offered. Thin, sweet, and tasting vaguely of mild solvent, I sipped it until I felt my mind circling the room like a leaf in an eddy. "the night lies like a patient etherized on the table" I thought, and then realized I had spoken the words aloud. The woman next to me only smiled in response, and said, softly, "you are looking well." I sipped my mineral spirits and sweet vermouth and nodded. "Yes," I said, "yes, we are all looking well." During a lull in the general conversation, someone rose and removed a record from a faded cardboard jacket, brushing the surface lightly with a cloth. He put it on the phonograph. I prayed it would be big band music, or some ancient country and western emerging from the rumble and hiss. It was the soundtrack of Love Story. Looking down, I realized my wrist watch had stopped.

Alas, you have touched my soul in such an endearling way as to confuse me so exceedingly. Dear, Dear Jane - of the family Austen - is but my favourite writer on the subject of all things decorum and good manners. Her eloquence pervades the sinews of all desires to be able to live in a world where such conversations existed. I am vexed to see and read bad manners as I yearn, in deep rooted civility to others, for all things to be dealt with so deliciously. Even arguments can be run in a civil and well mannered way. How good it is that you picked up on those who have influenced me. Miss Austen is ever so dear to my heart and helps my well being in so many ways.

As regards the Lizzie girl you mention. Well yes I quite agree. I have a respect for her tenacious meanderings and the way in which she conducts herself often in the face of a baying crownd. I so respect someone who is able to stand steadfast by a principle they believe in, even when contradictory to my own meanderings and musing, so once again, your observations are so erudite.

Alas, with great trepidation, I fear we should not look on her as a serving girl (for I have no wish to look down upon anyone from such Ivory Towers as could be ereted on such matters), but that we should invite her forthwith to make a contribuition to what is being said on her personage and get an opinion from her with great haste.

Yeah, sorry mp, I sorta forgot youse lot might not know what we call our tucker. Thanks for the link to the poem. Reading classical literature is all well and good but it can get youse all mixed up.

Snags? Well they're just the same as Mystery Bags. Reckon they might be a bit like the Pom's bangers but with more sawdust. Must have given ya a bit of a chuckle thinking the rivers full of bangers! Nah, them snags are just stuff like dead trees, Mum's old Whirlpool and tyres off've the ute.

Tinnies are what beer comes in. Ya could've got stubbies or long-necks but we don't want no broken glass getting in the trifle eh. If yer down the pub you don't want a tinny but, you'd ask for a schooner. See this is where literature got ya all mixed up again. A tinny is an aluminium boat. Ya wouldn't ask for a boat full of beer even on a hot day would ya?

His table's *covered* with crumpet and tarts, and they have to be cleared away by midnight. I've absolutely no idea how he's going to get through them all by them.

Anyway, I have to dash as we're all down to our undergarments down here and the room's starting to warm up a little at long last.

If you could try NOT to call him for at least 2 hours I'd appreciate it, as I'm trying to do something with his cucumber, to make tomorrow's sandwiches more juicy.
