How do I say it in Welsh?
Or write it anyway, I wouldn't dare try to wrap my English tongue round it.
I know David is Dewi (??)

Dydd Dewi Sant yn hapus. (Deeth Dowey sany unn hapees NB "th" is 'hard' as is "the", "these" rather than 'soft' as in "thorn" ; "thick").

The custom is to say Gw^yl Ddewi Hapus. (^ over the w) Or Dydd Gw^yl Ddewi Hapus if you want to include 'day'. Gwyl being 'festival' You wouldn't use 'yn' but I don't know enough about grammar to tell you why. Goo-eel THE*-wee HApuss.

Or Gw^yl Ddewi Dda (Good Dewi's Festival)

*THE = 'th' as per Bryn above; short 'e' sound; like 'them' without the 'm'

who is (was) St. David, and what did he do to get a day named after him
my calendar says it is a Canadian holiday. Is he the one who had a fight with Goliath?

No - That was King David.

This is the St David who's day was celebrated yesterday.

No, not the Goliath one. The wikipedia entry here is pretty good.

His last advice, "Gwnewch y pethau bychain" (Do the small things) is still much quoted. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, wrote, "it reminds us that the primary things for us are the relationships around us, the need to work at what's under our hands, what's within our reach. We can transform our domestic, our family relationships, our national life to some extent, if we do that with focus and concentration in the presence of God."

Can't think why it would be a Canadian holiday (speaking as a Canadian myself ...).

Possibly cheesed off with the Cambrian weather, he was one of Canada's first "Immigrantes " who came across the sea to a land he didn't know ?? (Sorry, Buffy !).
