Hi, few years late here lol..but Briege is from the village of mullaghbawn about 12 miles from newry deep in the south Armagh countryside. It is also Lislea that she talks about (Lisleas is a small village outside Camlough village that you pass on the way to mullaghbawn).

Briege Murphy was just over for our Irish Festival this weekend,so I asked her about this song.
She laughed when I told her I had problems with the one phrase.
It should read:``By the time we reached Lislea´´.
Pronounced``Lislay´´and means The Grey Fort.
It's a tiny place near where she lives (Newry).

Briege gave three very good concerts in Oslo this weekend.
I had the honour of playing guitar and singing backing vocals on one of her songs (So Far Down).

Greetings John.

Hi Phippa.
Well that's what it sounds like!
I wrote the text as I heard it from the CD.
And I've listen again(several times).
Can't get it to be``his place´´.

Where do you know Breige Murphy from?
I can put you in direct contact if you like!
She's from Newry.

Greetings John.

Hi Philippa.
I can help you with this one!
We had Briege Murphy over for our Irish Music Festival in 1997.A really fantastic singer and song writer.
She has given out two CDs.....
``The Longest Road´´(1995),and``The Sea and Other Songs´´(1997).
The song you asked about is on the first album.

KILBURN HIGH ROAD
(Briege Murphy)

We were walking Kilburn high road for we'd no where else to go
We got talking to an old man as we sheltered from the cold
He said ``Young ones don't be foolish now, these streets arn't paved with gold.
Take some wisdom from an old fool, and turn round and go back home.´´

Chorus:And we laid back in that cardboard city sunshine
All the vermin that we scratched became old friends
There were times I'd wake up shouting
``Alright ma,I'm getting up.´´
She'd be calling me for school or mass
But there the dream would end.

2.Well Shamie he had 90p,and I had 34
So we blew it on a horse that lost at Kempton Park at 4
But with luck we found a fiver just outside the seamans rest
So we bought a box of chicken wings and two of Mundays best
And the buzz we got was famous, but we sobbered soon enough
Then the old mans words came back to me,when times got really rough.
So we hitched our way to Hollyhead and we starved for 3 whole days.
T'was like getting back from Gettysburg by the time we reached Leslade(?).

Chorus

I hope this helps
Greetings John(Norway).

a new song by Briege Murphy, starts off:
We were walking Kilburn High Road for we'd nowhere else to go
We got talking to an old man and he suffered from the cold.
He said, "Young ones, don't be foolish now; these streets aren't paved with gold.
Take a listen from an old fool;turn around and go back home"
there's a chorus, We lay back in the cardboard city sunshine..., and two more verses
