Subject: RE: 40 Years ago, I was ten. Hendrix died... From: Willie-O Date: 14 Mar 10 - 11:40 AM Glenn Miller wasn't exactly "shot down" by the RAF. It's recently been concluded--because someone finally realized that they'd seen it happen--that his plane was off course and had strayed into a dangerous section of the English Channel. The area was the designated dumping zone for bombers returning from missions, which still had un-dropped bombs on board, to dispose of them in the Channel. Unfortunately a Lancaster dropped its bombs directly onto Miller's low-flying plane. Talk about bad luck. A crew member in a third plane in the area observed the incident--don't know why it wasn't reported at the time, or if it was, connected with Miller's disappearance. Hendrix. I was fourteen. Didn't quite make an impression on me until later. W-O |
Subject: RE: 40 Years ago, I was ten. Hendrix died... From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 14 Mar 10 - 10:34 AM I make a point of not crying when someone famous dies - I view it as an aspect of the pathetic 'celebrity worship' which seems to have taken over the world. I suppose if the 'celeb.' happened to be someone I knew well, and was fond of, I might make an exception ...possibly ... |

Subject: RE: 40 Years ago, I was ten. Hendrix died... From: Lonesome EJ Date: 13 Mar 10 - 12:28 PM The perception that Hendrix was a perpetual druggie is wrong, I believe. I even had a friend, who should know better, tell me Jimi's headband was soaked in LSD so he could stay high all the time. Jimi Hendrix was not a heroin addict. He was the victim of the uppers and downers syndrome that many musicians deal with to get to sleep after perfromances and stay up when exhausted. His girlfriend, Monika Danisson, had a German sleeping pill prescription that was much stronger than the pills Hendrix was used to dealing with, and he accidentally od'd. He and Joplin, who did die of a heroin overdose, died a short space apart in 1970. Morrison died in 1971. |

Subject: RE: 40 Years ago ,I was ten. Hendrix died... From: GUEST,eric the viking Date: 12 Mar 10 - 04:49 PM I saw him at the Isle of Wight. (Sort of, quite near the front, tired and a bit spacey, I think I had a great time) My mate and I had travelled by train to Portsmouth, got there very late, had a couple of beers, dodged the tars who were out for trouble, slept on a bench seat in the fortified walls, got woken up by a sub passing to find we were on a seat with water all around us,got the first ferry across to Ryde and then across to afton down for the do) On the night Jimmi died I was in London and saw the newspapers on the Saturday evening. I was 21. I was really sad about it. He changed my perception of guitar in pop music. His death also marked a big change in my life. I still have the 45rpm that was put out in the few weeks after with Hey joe, All along the Watchtower and Voodo chille. I've also still got all the obits. |
Subject: RE: 40 Years ago ,I was ten. Hendrix died... From: vectis Date: 11 Mar 10 - 06:38 PM I cried buckets when Jimi died, I had even managed to get a fast chat with him as he came offstage at the Isle of Wight Festival soon before. Lovely chap and a stupid waste for him to die so young. |

Subject: RE: 40 Years ago ,I was ten. Hendrix died... From: Fortunato Date: 11 Mar 10 - 01:41 PM Tim, Murray MacCloud asked me to reassure you, as I did for him in the matter of Elvis' death, that you were not reponsible for Mr. Hendrix' demise. Your tenth birthday and Jimmy's death were unrelated events, and you are not a person of interest in this matter. You may relinquish any feelings of guilt or responsibilty. chance |

Subject: RE: 40 Years ago ,I was ten. Hendrix died... From: Little Hawk Date: 11 Mar 10 - 11:30 AM I didn't take much notice of it at the time, although I did like his music reasonably well. I bought several of his albums in the early 70s. Some of his lyrics were quite interesting, and I always loved the cover art on "Axis: Bold as Love". The musician's death that really hit me was when John Lennon was killed in 1980. That was quite a shock. |

Subject: RE: 40 Years ago ,I was ten. Hendrix died... From: bubblyrat Date: 11 Mar 10 - 08:34 AM Well, the year Hendrix died,I was 23, and ,whilst I'd heard of him (it would have been hard not to),I wasn't exactly into that kind of music ,and am still not !! What was far more heartbreaking for ME that year was that July 30th saw the last ever issue of the daily Rum Ration to sailors in the Royal Navy, after which, I have to say, that once-proud service has been in decline ! |
