Subject: BS: Farewell Frost; but an anonomaly
From: MGM·Lion

David Jason has made the part of tv's Detective Inspector Jack Frost his very own over the years, and will be sorely missed. But has no-one else observed the anomaly that a man of his height would have been much too short to qualify to be a copper at the time Frost would have joined? Until 20 years ago, according to Wikipedia, the various UK forces had minimum height requirements of between 5'8" and 5'10". David Jason [5'6"] would never have qualified.

I was taller 20 years ago.

He wore platform shoes.

Not only too short but much too old. The idea of David ~Jason as a police officer always seemed ludicrous to me. Even within the clichéd conventions of the genre, the series was just another stereotype, but DJ - great actor though he is - made it unbelievable.

He lied about his height.

This is all old hat, even David Jason was bemused by it.

hi

I don't feel that "the anomaly " detracted too much from the performances.

IMHO these are dramtaic licence to allow an entertainment value to be brought to the viewers.

I don't know if anyone is interested enough to have watched the alternative ending that ITV had prepared.

I wonder if anyone has any comments about the two different endings??

I will miss Frost just as I miss Morse.

cheers

I think Morse gets the edge for me

I could never warm to Morse the same way. This anomaly, BTW, never detracted from the episodes or the performances for me; just a funny little niggle at back of mind, that's all ~~ as someone sez on Creeping Jane thread above: I am just something of a 'professional pedant', and can't help noticing these things!

I agree with you about Morse MtheGM, he was not portrayed as a likeable character.

BTW there were three alternative endings filmed, the death of either Frost, Norman Mullet or George Toolan, they went with Toolan.

Hi Dave

I only found one alternative - but I didn't look too closely. The one I saw was Frost had a heart attack.

My wife liked the ending they actually showed....romantic !!!

Me I preferred to see Frost go. After all he had diced with death so many times previously. Someone or something was bound to get him in the end.

cheers

Hi dave

Certainly Morse was not as likeable a person as Frost in the TV series.

I don't know if you have read any of the Morse books but in the early ones he was far more unpleasant than they show him to be on TV.

IMHO as the series progressed John Thaw influenced Dexter to make his character more likeable - there is a noticeable, if gradual, change after about episode 5 .

I used to work in Oxford so I enjoyed not only the stories but the ambience and locations.

Cheers

Mikel2, ITV showed a programme about the whole thing last night and it showed the three possible deaths, it was a last minute decision to go with DS Toolan.

It was nice to see Jack happy at last.

Thanx Terry ~~ I think I had actually quoted a young woman on another forums website who had said my pedantry was 'legendary'. There's glory 4U!

Perhaps he shrank in the wash? I have not seen it but will make an effort to catch up if it is on any of the catch up channels. I have not seen the latest Jonathon Creek either - With her from 2 pints of lager. I did watch Doctor Who though. They are putting too much good stuff on TV - Bring back the days when I could go for days on end without turning it on :-) Traditional telly , that's what we need...

Hi dave

Yes I recorded that but haven't looked at it yet. The ITV site just showed the two.

Yes it good to see Jack happy with someone who he would probably settle down with ??

Thanks

hi dave

To much good telly????!!!

What you mean is that like Manchester buses there is none for ages and then they all come at once....lol

My grandson stayed with us over Easter and we watched Dr Who with him.
Do you know that is the first time I have ever watched it???

Not very impressed....but I am biassed. My grandson loved it so that is all that mattered. Mission accomplished.

I can't compare the new guy with any of the others cos I never really saw any of them actually in the role. Though I have seen most of them on TV from time to time. I did see David Tennant in one of the charity shows.

I also watched the first episode of Ashes to Ashes. Is it just me or does this not come anywhere close to Life on Mars???

cheers

MikeL2

Agree with the last bit, Mike. Life on Mars was far better. I love Doctor Who though. But if you take individual episodes from the Christopher Eccleston (good Salford lad btw) incarnation onwards you may miss a lot. It all sort of gelled and we started to see the full scope of the plot part way through Tennants tenure. Like Morse/Frost etc - It is much more enjoyable when you get the big picture. And I don't mean 42" LCD...

I'm a Wallender man myself ( either Branagh or the Swedish actor;they are both credible ).But I liked Frost also,if only because Mullet was such a Cnut (I'm dysexcil) . Anyway,I missed the last episode of Frost....so what happened ??

Hi Dave

I am sure you are right about the big picture.

I think Cristopher Eckleston is a great actor. Really enjoyed him in Cracker. Cracker IMHO never did tranlate well in the US.

It is the same with us. We try US shows that don't crack it.

Cheers

There were height limits to join the police force until the 70's when they were abandoned because some races like Chinese etc. are naturally small so it was a sort of equal opportunities thing. I beleive there is now no 'official' height limit which is why you see so many 'short-arsed' policemen about.

Oh please, if we started on anomolies in TV programmes, we'd be here forever... don't even GET me started on the procedure and timescales in any of the CSI programmes (but especially CSI Miami)....

I seem to remember PC McGarry Number 452 wasn't exactly lofty...
