ZM was in France last week and the night before she was due to return she fell and broke her hip. She's had an operation but is still in hospital in Normandy and not feeling too cheerful (and at the moment we don't know how much longer she'll have to stay).

If you'd like to send her a message, please do and I'll pass them on.

I hope she'll better soon and that they did the repair correctly. If they did she'll be hopping around as well as before! I know one woman whose had four hip replacements -- might have something to do with her being a ski racer in her younger years, though. Tell ZM to skitter back home!

An excellent and very powerful argument for always carrying your E111 card when you travel to Europe! (for those who don't have them, an E111 is a little card that entitles you to free medical treatment as a citizen of the EU - or at least, reduced medical fees and cover - vital if you're going to daft things like fall over and break stuff).

Hope you're feeling better soon dear, at least in Normandy the food is good - if you like galettes and cider!

I read ZM the messages yesterday and she said it cheered her up a lot to hear them.

Currently we don't know when she'll be able to travel, so I don't know when she'll be back.

Well THAT sucks. Odd that they can't make a prognosis at least to give you some idea of discharge.

Here in New Brunswick, Canada, they would be shoving her out the door before the plaster set.

They'd be doing the same thing in the U.S. This is NOT the time of year to have orthopedic surgery. It is not a good time of year to be incapacitated for long periods of time. Of course you can mudcat for therapy.
My mom had 3 hip replacements. (One of them didn't work.) Rule number one is do your exercises. The doctor said, "As steadily as you practice your religion." Mom said, "I'm not very religious. I'll do them more often than that.

Only just picked up on this thread.

My dad managed to do just that on holiday in Scotland (at 85!)and I had to go help 'rehome' him.

Take things steady and enjoy being home - but remember to do (NOT overdo)your excercises and you'll soon be mobile again.

Now that I've recovered from the journey I can post more.

It really was the most STUPID of accidents. I was stone cold sober and stood in a friend's drive and just WOBBLED. My balance isn't great so I wobble a lot - lol

I didn't realise I had hurt myself until I tried to get up - THEN I realised.

Paramedics were called and I was whipped off to a hospital in Fleur. The experience wasn't all bad as the food was excellent and, amazingly for me, I actually looked forward to hospital food. The operation was simple and went well but I think I will probably trigger security cameras in airports from now on, as there is a lot of metalwork in the hip now.

Recovery will be slow because of the position of the break but I should be able to put my foot to the ground in about 5 weeks time. Annoying really because I have heard so many stories of folk having whole hip replacements and standing within a couple of days.

The whole experience was horrible but it did get worse, including some black moments, like when the keyboard on my mobile phone locked itself and I couldn't use the mobile at all (mobiles are allowable in French hospitals!). Being cut off from humanity was a dark day.

I think coming home was the worse part of it though. As I had had a pulmonary embolism after the operation I'd been told not to fly for 6 months and they wouldn't allow me out of hospital unless it was into Mick's care, so poor old Mick had to drive out to France to collect me and then we had a nightmare drive of car, ferry and then car. We got back here at 3am and then had real problems getting me inside. The house just isn't built for an invalid, there are big steps up to all doors. The only way I could get in was to sit on the bottom step and inch my way back on my bum and then lever myself up the steps. I managed to get as far as the sitting room floor and then Mick just had to cover me over and get a pillow and leave me there for the night as I was in too much pain to go any further. A few hours later we called paramedics who help me onto the settee and I've lived there ever since.

Anyway, there's the whole sorry saga.

Wow, you have been in the wars lassie. I don't suppose you have or can borrow a reclining chair, but that was what I found the most comfortable resting place after my hip ops. It doubles as a bed as well as a comfy chair.
Keep on keeping on, it will mend eventually, you just need to grit your teeth and not let it get you down too much.

Just in case any of you lovely Catters are interested, I saw a fracture specialist at our local hospital on Friday. I was rather hoping he would tell me that the French were being over cautious and that I could actually put weight on the leg and start walking again.

Alas, he told me that the hip was in FOUR fragments (I never do things by half!) and that it would probably take 3 months for the bones to knit together. I have another appointment in 4 weeks time when they will x-ray again and, of course, I'm hoping the news will be better.

I know I'm healing as I can feel a big difference on a daily basis.

UPDATE:

After 4 very long months I've been told today that I can try to go upstairs. No more sleeping on the settee for me. Yippppeeee.

I can walk with a zimmer frame to the downstairs loo and out to the car but that has been a fight. I'm glad I didn't know just how long it was going to take right at the beginning. Most journeys are still in a wheelchair. Never mind, still hoping to be on my feet by Bedworth.

Incidentally I have lost 2.5 inches on my left side. Anyone got an idea how to
