Spent a few years of my childhood there, and one year of my young adulthood as a freshman at Hampden-Sydney College. Sadly, neither stay was particularly happy, but that had less to do with the area and more to do with my circumstances. My family lived in Farmville for a few years when my Dad was director of the Piedmont Planning District. This was way back in 19...69? We lived in a place we called Hassels Hollow, a little brick number at the bottom of a steep hill. (The front yard was great in the winter!). My parents divorced while we were living there. I think I was six years old. Years later I came back for my first year of college. I didn't particularly like H-S. I had a couple of good teachers, but I was clinically depressed and found most of the students there to be really stuck up. (I hope I give no offense to anyone). Interestingly, I moved back home after that year and went to a community college to get my GPA and self-esteem back up. 1983. That was the year I discovered Celtic Music. I am convinced that if I had not found it (or it found me) I probably would have offed myself. I wasn't a very happy camper at that time in my life. I can't really put it into words very well. It was like my ship was sinking, and the music slowly patched up all of the holes. I think that is why the music is so important to me now. Sorry to ramble on so. Just reminiscing. Beau |

And, yes, I play an assortment of instruments, including my Copeland. Perhaps we met at the Monticello Brewing Co. session, though I haven't been in a while. Or could it possibly have been at the old Rising Sun Bakery session? Drop me an E some time. My e-mail is on my mudcat page. I'd like to hear more about the scene up there. I have a few friends who live up there that I visit from time to time. I'm gonna start co,ing up to the Contra's at Glen Echo more often. It'd be nice to know about cool bands and friendly sessions. I've lived up here all my life though, and still haven't been to Nanny O'Brien's. I know some of the Nanny-session crowd though. I have a friend who is trying to put together a session in the Fairfax area if anyone is ever interested. I've been to Glen Echo once, and almost got run over (during a Beausoliel concert). That was my first impression of contra dancing, and I will never get over it! Thought recently I went to Augusta and played/danced at the ceili there, and it wasn't so bad. (Hey, I'm still alive, right?) Rick, what do you play? I tried to do solo stuff, but you know there ain't much you can do with just solo fiddle or sean nos singing. So it was funny to hear you say that sometimes you hire a band. I was fortunate enough to be playing at the Va. Renaissance Fair (2 hours from my house) and met up with some fine musicians who live on the same street as I do! I'd like to hear more about the "no, I don't play in a band" lifestyle! Yeah, Glen Echo is kind of like Darwinian dancing: survival of the fleetest. But they have a great floor. Sounds like you had fun at augusta. I did swannanoa dance week last summer and was gonna do irish week this year, but I spent all of my money on instruments. Sigh.... There's always next year. Talk to you later!
