It certainly does, just had a magnificent bife in the Buenos Aires Restaurant in Purley - with entertainment from the "tattoo and shirt hanhing out" bar next door!!

Whatever happened to the old English word "Argentinian"?

A friend of mine was invited to a bbq of another lecturer recently - said other lecturer being Argentinian, and came back speaking very highly of the specially arranged Argentinian beef. I think the embassy had something to do with the import arrangements.

My wife is in constant pain, but finds that Argentine beef provides a measure of relief. I just enjoy it more than any other.

I remember now that one of the consultants that she sees mentioned a report that traces of steroids had been found in Argentine beef - so there you go.

Nothing wrong with good British beef - especially when you know where it's come from and may even have seen it on the hoof. I particularly like the meat from Dexter cattle - there's a farm nearby that sells it direct to the customer. Steroids are nasty things and I, personally, can do without them. (They make you irrational, aggressive and unpleasant, Boko!)

We got a couple of rib-eye steaks from a 'Traditional & Rare Breeds' butcher in Herefordshire when camping there, and had them BBQ'd at the campsite. Best piece of steak either of us have ever had by a mile.

My fella hasn't stopped going on about it ever since! Can't recall the breed though, I probably never even asked.. :-/

Direct to the customer - in the late 70s I did the accounts of Cobden Farms in Martock near Yeovil, and they had a farm shop which sold direct to the customer. The main business was an abattoir of course. I would drive back to our office with my car boot full of complete fillet steaks costing around £3 each, I wonder what they would cost now?

There is certainly nothing wrong with good British beef, but Argentine steaks do please my taste buds rather more - and likewise the ambience of an Argentine restaurant.

Aha, well as we were in Herefordshire and bought the beef from a traditional breeds butcher, I guess the steak was probably from Hereford cattle?
I thought I aught to look it up, as I don't know anything about this stuff. And it sed:

Hereford: one of the oldest and most important cattle breeds in British livestock history. Its beef is of the highest quality and has a distinctive flavour – it is tender and very well marbled giving a depth of flavour to the meat.

Which sounds about right..

I remember my uncle, who was a butcher, telling me many, many years ago when Argentinian beef was regulary imported into Britain, that the reason it tasted good was that it had had plenty of time to mature on the sea voyage over.

Incidentally, if any beef had the ability to make a person "feel better" that same beef has the ability to kill. I am severely allergic to a number of things; I would not want ever to eat something that I knew had a lingering component to it.

Excuse me, I saw the lights on and smelled some beef..
I´m native of Argentina, I live in Buenos Aires and love to cook and enjoy national emblematic beef. First of all comes quality, marbling and tenderness of the meat, but the way of cooking is very important.

- Say no to hamburguers and german sausages in an Argentinian BBQ. You may say yes to Spanish type sausages, strongly seasoned.
- Do never cook beef on open flame, just put it near the hot coals.
- Trim excess fat
- Let a moderate crust form on both sides, then put it a little higher to allow a slow cooking until the inside gets rose colored, not much more. All natural juices will be kept inside.
- Use a type of grill which has channels for the fat to flow and not fall over the coal (that would produce flames)
- Dont cook on a pan, because it will fry the meat in its own fat.
- Use species and garlic to your taste. Best results if the meat is left some hour in a marinade of olive oil, garlic and some chili, (not hot)
- Argentinian gauchos cook beef addind only salt when already cooked. They don´t trim the fat, resulting in a greasy thing that I personally don't like.
- Get french type bread (baguette or similar) to accompany, avoid the industrial sandwich-type bread.
- Get a guitar and let someone else to play and sing
- Get a good Cabernet-Sauvignon, 2 pints per person, 6 pints for Spaw.

No, my wife is Anglo-Argentine - we try to visit Argentina every two of three years. Next time we will visit Rosario, and Salta - we have a friend who owns a hotel in San Lorenzo 7 km away. I also want to visit Iguazu again, I didn't have a camera when we went there in 2000.
