Subject: RE: BS: Different spelling of school in UK & US From: Richard Bridge Date: 11 Aug 10 - 10:51 AM One is reminded of the conversation - was it between Churchill and Eisenhower - Q..."Where did you learn to pronounce it "skedule"? A.."In shool of course". |
Subject: RE: BS: Different spelling of school in UK & US From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 11 Aug 10 - 11:25 AM I heard basically the same conversation (although perhaps between two other speakers)as: "In England we pronounce the word spelled 'schedule' as 'shedule'. Why do you Yanks insist on saying 'skedule'?" "Better shool system, I guess." Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: BS: Different spelling of school in UK & US From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Aug 10 - 12:05 PM In high school and college I learned that if we are concentrating hard on what letters should look like, we can make the most foolish misspellings. That may have happened here, where the crew was concentrating on the equipment. For some reason, a widespread goof was 'stratigrapic.' On the other hand, if it was August in North Carolina, it was probably incredibly hot on the black asphalt, and that does not lead to clear thinking. And the crew might not even speak English. Good thing the paint was merely interim. |

Subject: RE: BS: Different spelling of school in UK & US From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 11 Aug 10 - 09:41 PM That was in the newspaper I get. Someone I once knew showed me a design for a poster, and the spelling mistakes were amazing. The words that you would consider to be harder to spell were spelled correctly, but words you would consider to be easier to spell like "money" were spelled incorrectly. He spelled it as "munny". |
Subject: RE: BS: Different spelling of school in UK & US From: HuwG Date: 11 Aug 10 - 09:45 PM The BBC program "That's Life", presented by Esther Rantzen, once had a gallery of misspelled road signs in Britain. Could it get worse than "BUS SOTP", they wondered. The next one (on the approach to a bend) read "SLOM". |

Subject: RE: BS: Different spelling of school in UK & US From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Aug 10 - 08:32 PM I usually watch news on BBC America. At the botton, other news items are often scrolled, with occasional mis-spellings. No one is safe from occasional mis-steps. Look at some of the typing in Ebooks. Must have been done by arthritic geriatrics. Grammar as well. One I remember from childhood in bilingual Santa Fe was Keep Off From the Grass. Must have been on dozens of city-made signs. |
