Canada is wising up, They are building a 6 billion dollar ice breaking fleet to counter the recent Russian claims that they own the newly opened north sea passage.

Excuse the pun but it seems that Canada will soon engage in a cold war with Russia.

Sure, Artbrooks, there are a huge variety of American accents. Nonetheless, I have always noticed that Americans stretch out the "ow" vowel sound in "about" a little more than Canadians do and in a more nasal fashion. Southerners and westerners stretch it out a lot more than Canadians do, northerners to a lesser extent.

And that's why the Canadian "about" seems to sound sort of like "aboot" to some Americans, but they're not really listening very carefully to the sound when they say that. They need to hear a Scot say "aboot", and then they'd KNOW what "aboot" sounds like.

It is possible that there may be some people from Boston or somewhere who say the word exactly as Canadians do...I don't know...but if there are, I haven't met them yet.

Dr. Calvin Rickson, a scientist from McGill University , has invented a bra that keeps women's breasts from jiggling, or bouncing up and down, and prevents the nipples from pushing through the fabric when cold weather sets in.

At a news conference, after announcing the invention, a large group of men took Dr. Rickson outside and kicked the shit out of him.

Rapaire...Canadians don't say "aboot". Scots say "aboot". Canadians and English people say "about". Americans say "abowwwt". That is, they stretch out the "ow" sound in the middle of the word just a tad longer than Canadians do, and give it a more nasal tone.

I can demonstrate all 3 sounds for you quite easily, and show you the difference. Phone me, and I'll show you what I mean. ;-)

Canada has Stan Rogers and a heroine of mine, Naomi Klein.

Unfortunately it has Harper who is Bush North.

I loved Cape Breton and P.E.I when I was there.

I think there should be a tri-quel called NAFTA Idiot. Can't wait!

"I'VE felt those winds from The Great White North!"

Hi, Rapaire. In the last few years I have been reading books about weather, trying to understand tornadoes. Now, all my life I have blamed Canada for the cold weather that descends on the Midwest, but apparently it comes from somewhere else. It spins down out of the northwest, from a semi-permanent feature called the Aleutian Low.

Too bad we can't blame the Canadians anymore. They are getting dangerously cocksure.

There not eating fir, their eating... No their chewing gum. Use to collect it as a child. Boil it, add a little sugar, and presto!! Taste terrible but i still did it because I was told as a child that the fellow who invented gum got it from the balsam trees. Maybe it was a lie but i believed it. Reminds me of a time when I told a young gal to shake the grasshopper in her hand and say "Grasshopper, grasshopper, give me molasses". Then let it go and lick what it left in your hand. It was sweet (I guess I must have done it as well.). I told her this is how molasses is made. She believed me.

In the 100 years since the first moose swam into Lake Superior and set up shop on an island, they have mostly minded their moosely business, munching balsam fir and trying to evade hungry gray wolves.

But now the moose of Isle Royale have something to say — well, their bones do. Many of the moose, it turns out, have arthritis. And scientists believe their condition's origin can help explain human osteoarthritis — by far the most common type of arthritis, affecting one of every seven adults 25 and older and becoming increasingly prevalent.

The arthritic Bullwinkles got that way because of poor nutrition early in life, an extraordinary 50-year research project has discovered. That could mean, scientists say, that some people's arthritis can be linked in part to nutritional deficits, in the womb and possibly throughout childhood.

The moose conclusion bolsters a small but growing body of research connecting early development to chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, which currently affects 27 million Americans, up from 21 million in 1990.

BTW... The Guess Who, for me, as a rock'n'roll band, and individually, have been and are far more competent, creative and entertaining than such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and many others.

I do not say that as a Canuck, rather, simply as an audience member.
Of course, judging musical talent is silly. But, posts to their detriment pisses me off simply because of that. And because they are so good at what they do.

Canada isn't drafting anyone either, Rapaire. We have a volunteer army. Most voluteers are lower income family kids looking for secure employment in tough economic times, while some, I suppose are kids from families with a strong military tradition.

"American Woman" is a rather silly song on the whole, I think. I wouldn't take it too seriously or try to extrapolite complex gender issues from it.

"I met a devil woman, she took my heart away
She said I had it comin' to me, but I wanted it that way
I think that any love is good lovin'
And so I took what I could get, mmm
Oooh, oooh, she looked at me with big brown eyes
And said

You ain't seen nothin' yet
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet
Here's something that you never gonna forget
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet"

... excerpt from a song by that same Canadian group.

Let me get this straight. A bunch of male politicians and military men start a war. A bunch of other men, many of them young draftees join the war.

Then some other men write a song against it all and call it 'American Woman.'

Right. Sounds like the essence of most popular culture. Stick in a woman and make it her fault.

yes the gov't is secretly delighted by the money that rolls in... so much so that most Canadians would be surprised to know that a lot of their Pension Plan contributions (CPP) are invested in components and services for the global war machine... $282 million for 2006 alone

if you add on big tobacco and other questionable industries, it runs into the billions... but we're nice peace-keepers no ?

Hoser... an obscene definition (cover your ears while you read this if required)...

From hosehead, "polite" or "code" for dickhead. From equating hose with dick.

Whoever wrote the song, Mousethief, may have been unaware of those Canadian munitions companies. Then too, we have a capitalist system in Canada, right? That means our government can refuse to participate in an American war, but it cannot stop our privately owned corporate industries from selling war materials to be used in that war if they wish to. Mind you, the government is probably secretly delighted at the money that rolls in from those sales, despite maintaining its pristine appearance of morality by not fighting in the war. That's capitalism for you. Profit trumps principle, every time. ;-)

But who is ultimately to blame for a war? The country that makes the decision to wage it, I would think. Businessmen will always take advantage of wars if they can.

****

hoser - a term which means a really stupid young Canadian man, probably unemployed, mainly concerned with beer, fast food, and avoiding work by any and all means possible. A layabout. An idiot. The term is also a euphemism for the familiar term "f*cker" which young men like this use almost constantly, sometimes in an affectionate sense (to their good buddies), sometimes in a hostile sense (to denote disapproval).

Variation of hoser: hosehead (means basically the same as f*ckhead)

Mousethief, if one of those guys wrote something called 'American Woman,' I don't think I want to risk listening.

It's a rock song by the Canadian band The Guess Who. Basic message is "America sucks because of the Vietnam War." Doesn't mention the Canadian munitions companies that made a mint off the war. Dunno why not.

What are hosers? If it's obscene, don't bother explaining.

It's a made-up insult from a recurring sketch on the tv show SCTV, which sketch was called "Great White North", and consisted of two Canadian brothers who swapped insults and talked about Things Canadian in bad accents and with much stereotype exaggeration.

Mousethief, if one of those guys wrote something called 'American Woman,' I don't think I want to risk listening.

I visted Canada twice with my family. The climate was cool but the people were warm and friendly. I will never forget the waterfalls plunging over the cliffs on their way to Lake Superior. And the Ouimet Canyon. Google it.

What are hosers? If it's obscene, don't bother explaining.
