Nonetheless, I have always noticed that Americans stretch out the "ow" vowel sound in "about" a little more than Canadians do and in a more nasal fashion. Southerners and westerners stretch it out a lot more than Canadians do, northerners to a lesser extent. And that's why the Canadian "about" seems to sound sort of like "aboot" to some Americans, but they're not really listening very carefully to the sound when they say that. They need to hear a Scot say "aboot", and then they'd KNOW what "aboot" sounds like. It is possible that there may be some people from Boston or somewhere who say the word exactly as Canadians do...I don't know...but if there are, I haven't met them yet. |

Most voluteers are lower income family kids looking for secure employment in tough economic times, while some, I suppose are kids from families with a strong military tradition.
