Subject: BS: having a bad week?
From: I don't know
Date: 27 Aug 10 - 07:23 AM

Anybody having a bad week/day. Started this week with a fall which left me with a sprained ankle but with the bad weather decided it was a blessing as I wouldn't have to worry about getting the grass cut. My husband then rang & said the young lad he works with father had died that morning (not expected) then last night one of our neighbours hung himself in the house while his wife was sitting down stairs. He has left her with three young boys under 7 years old & a baby which they know will be a girl due early October. Then this morning I get a call to say my disabled mother is back in hospital having fallen while the carer was helping her shower this morning, so now I am of to the hospital to see how bad she is. Hopefully the sun is going to soon shine & things can only get better.

Last night went for a walk at 3AM couldn't sleep, back hurt
I was walking by a ditch with some high grass ... out came a big skunk
Yup he nailed me right in the leg .. spent half the night taking tomato juice baths and white vinegar and still smell it ... this summer there is so many skunks out . I think it was all the hot weather

Yup I am having a bad week for sure

Dan, Dan, Dan - that old canard of using tomato juice or vinegar is so like yesterday. Here is the latest purported remedy:

Skunk Smell Remover

1 quart Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent. The stuff for washing dishes in the sink, not something for dishwashers.

Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, because it will boil up like Vesuvius. We are, after all, making an oxygen generator. Wash the dog (or old dude) with this while it is still foaming, because it is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols in the skunk stink to neutralize the odor. If it sits around, it will loose it's efficacy because the oxygen boils off. Don't try to store it in an airtight container, because it will blow up. The brew also works for clothes, humans and unlucky

hips throbbing like toothache for about 2 weeks now. Chemo nausea all night, migraine w/nausea this morning and yesterday morning a 40 minute episode of excruciating jaw ache (both of them) and sensation that appx 60 pound weight was sitting on my upper chest. My colleague said I went grey and called the first aider who wanted to call NHS Direct. I just went for a slow walk around until it became tolerable enough to work.

I still feel like shite warmed over today.

But think I will take my probs against the skunk any day.

Well, apart from getting drenched to the skin getting to and from Tom's doctor's offices via public transport in Boston on Wednesday, and really tearing up my sprained foot and out of whack knee (now both vying to be most the painful), and having found out yesterday that I was secret shopped for the second time in less than a month (both reports exceptionally favorable, though) and not having a raise (sort of expected) show up in last Friday's paycheck (haven't had a raise since December 2008), we're doing okay.

The good news is Tom's vocal restoration is about to start, we've got five new cords of firewood in the driveway, I have a steady job (even if it means being on my sprained foot and wonky knee all day), we're going into winter with practically new tires on the car, the sun is shining, and the Press Room session is this afternoon after work.

I slept (whenever I did sleep last night) in the basement ... I am going to mix up your brew and give it a try right now .. I still reek . my wife has me banished to the basement at the moment ...

God that was aweful .. not the first time I have been hit .. he at least didnt' blast me good ... just a spot on my leg but believe me it was enough .. I came home, stripped naked in the yard and ran to the shower .. my cloths are still out in the yard this morning ...

that was awful

We've had a good week, so I won't say any more except to wish you all well, including the skunk who was just defending its territory or was frightened out of its spray.:-)

Virginia Tam hope your health problems improve quickly.
Just got back from hospital, visiting mum, put her replacement hip out for the 7th time in three years, but they operated & put it back now its just time until they send her home again.
The lady who lost her husband has been back to the house with the children who were away with their grandparents when it happened & we have been rallying round to help sort things out but not much can be done until after the inquest & the bank holiday. Poor woman doesn't know where she is, the kids are the only thing helping her keep things together at the moment.

Yeah....the week sucks.......It started so nicely with Karen's surgery but we had to go back for a major post op hematoma and additional surgery plus antibiotics and that put a bit of a downer on an otherwise happy event.

Then my computer has fried its brain and is going to require some major work........

The week ended today with euthanizing the best dog I ever had and when I finally got around to Mudcat again some conspiracy junkie (dunno' who and don't care) had started yet another asswipe 9-11 thread...........

I'm not having a very good week either..and when I got back from doing a show (which is not enough fun to be worth the energy it drains) I smelled a skunk walking around outside.
I just hope it's Dan's skunk so he doesn't have to stink up the place again anytime soon!

Next week will surely be better for us all.

She should have done, or better just called an ambulance. Those are the classic symptoms of a heart attack.

Get yourself to hospital pronto. If you have had a heart attack (which is very very likely) they can detect it by enzyme tests and give the appropriate medication to minimize the damage.

thanks IDK.. hope things improve for you Mom and that the young widow finds some peace and strength through this ordeal.

Dan thanks for giving the Skunk a reprieve. And for the hug. I think my main prob is I am really homesick. I need to displace the negative nergy with positive and share it around. Focus on others and stop wallowing in self pity.

Ebb thanks for hug.

Spaw, gentle hug for Karen and for you a puppy to help with the grief of lost best dog and a pair of annoying thread filtering spectacles so you don't see what annoys you.

Jack... I have not been feeling great since that episode but I am much better. No chest or jaw pain. Just headache.   Last couple of times I had high blood pressure and chest pain, docs dismissed them as panic attacks. I often awake with pounding heartbeat sound in ears and feeling horrible like flu but still they say only panic attacks. So I am trying to ignore them.

Besieged by entropy! Too many things falling apart all at once. Plumbing, computers, underwear, stonewall around the patio collapsing....etc.

except that Nature has been raining, and that means ANTI entropy...grass and weeds and vines and 'volunteer' trees have been getting ahead of me for months!and all that means mosquitoes are in full attack mode!....except that entropy in Nature is also attacking, as storms have covered the lawn, roof, patio and driveway in dead limbs and leaves and I have been hurrying to pick up and bag all the dead and cut bits, so I can mow and trim all the live and overwhelming bits, and I have to go buy MORE lawn trimming bags so I can put out both remnants of dead and cut back live bits.

and that rain? It didn't all stay outside! A bunch of it got INSIDE the basement, and I have been drying damp pieces of carpet out in the driveway and running fans and dehumidifiers in my workshop so I can get back to whatever it is I do there when I am not running in circles trying to decide which form of entropy to deal with.

Oh...and my local bank has been bought out by a bigger bank...(6th time in 25 years)...and in 2 weeks, I have to redo all my passwords and checks)

...and I am being deluged with mail & phone calls about elections....

I have "Red Queen Syndrome" ..."sometimes I have to run EVER so hard, just to stay in the same place"

Bill - just remember not to repair the plumbing, computers or underwear with the cement you mix up to fix the stonewall on the patio.

VT - NO doctor should be dismissing an episode like that as a panic attack without doing blood tests to rule out heart attack.

I have had both (the panic attacks decades ago, heart attack last year). What you've experienced sounds FAR more like a heart attack (though your symptoms were more extreme than mine). Panic is a normal side-effect - I was rather unusual in having no panic symptoms and a lot less pain than most.

A GP can order the relevant blood tests, but it'd be better to get it done at the A&E department where they can do ECGs at the same time. The blood tests say whether or not there was a heart attack, the ECGs locate where the damage occurred - if they come up positive, they are usually followed by an echocardiogram and an angiography.

The NHS and the British Heart Foundation have put a lot of resources into publicizing the symptoms of heart attack (which are exactly what you described). They are not doing this for laughs. They expect people to act on it. Even now, about half the people who get heart attacks will die within 24 hours. Left untreated, your chances of surviving a second one are much worse.

BHF: women and heart disease

Christ Jack... you are scaring me. I don't have the confidence to demand anything from GP or any other doc because they just dismiss me as an hysterical woman.

I have questioned both my GP and the Rheumatolgy nurse about the affect of RA on heart. Both said it is rare and that if I was having probs they would be able to by looking at me. I would be constantly breathless. Ordered no tests. BP is little bit high for my age, but not enough to warrant drug intervention.

I had tests in early 2009, both stress and 24 ECG after episode of triple digit systolic and diastolic BP. Blood tests were ordered by A&E observation, but neither my GP nor the cardiologist (my GP referred me to) could get the results from the hospital and they did not order more.

Too late now to ask GP to order blood test isn't it? The episode was early last week and I don't feel so horrible now.

It's not too late. The enzyme tests measure substances that leak from damaged heart muscle. That continues for days or weeks after the event. The ECG trace is also distinctive. And it will make a HUGE difference if you can get them to find your previous ECG records - changes in the ECG are very significant, more so than the trace taken in isolation.

RA effects on the heart are different - usually valve damage. This leads to the heart working less efficiently (hence the chronic breathlessness), but doesn't have much to do with heart attack.

A doctor who makes a patient feel like a "hysterical woman" is a crap doctor. You deserve to be taken seriously.

Thank you for your messages. The eldest boy is very upset but says he is going to school tomorrow with his "mates". The head teacher has been this morning & spoke with the mother & as the playgroup is held at the same place as the junior school he has said to send the 4 year old with his brother & just keep the youngest one with her & see how things go, he has offered to have the youngest one also if it helps.
Everyone has rallied round with doing washing/shopping & cooking to help her out. I think the hardest thing is helping sort her husbands belongings (most are going to charity) & she should hear today that she can arrange the funeral.
May everyone have a better week- the sun is shinning here at the moment & that lifts the spirits.

Went through a week of hell in the house getting the interior painted and themesses cleaned up, all the furniture lumped into piles. Just as that was finished, took off for a hellish cross-country series of flights. Then found myself in Paradise for a week with my cousin in Nova Scotia. Ah, joy!! Came home (another series of hellish flights) and spend two days putting furniture in the garage for the carpet guys to do their thing. There was, it seemed, no end to chaos!

Suddenly, the new carpets are all in and one by one the lamps, tables puters and knickknacks are finding their way back to their rightful locations.

Order is being forged from the maw of disorder, harmony from chaos, and the new carpets and paint look terrific.

EXCELSIOR! And all that.

Jack... on your advice and that of a few others, I have made an appointment with GP for this Thursday.

I need an organisation fairy to help me sort out our flat. I have no energy to deal with the clutter and ironing (2 baskets) that keep building up in spare room. It is kind of like the Bermuda Triangle, right now. Things go in and are never seen again.

Well last week was bad for me but not as bad as for other people. The question we are left with now is how much do we tell the boys. The eldest had a good cry last night & keeps saying he wants to see his dad, now the second one is copying him. The police seem to think it is up to the mother to decide, as the body was not damaged in any way. So far the mother has just told them he was ill & died, I think this is enough at the moment for them to take in. Anyone had this problem & if so how did you overcome it? any suggestions would be gratefully received thank you.

Good luck!

I was on Ramipril for a bit after my heart attack (though I don't have high blood pressure). I found the stuff made me wake up with the depressive heebie-jeebies unless I took it first thing in the morning. It did make an assortment of odd chest pains go away, though. I ended up just taking it on days when I woke up with my chest feeling odd, and haven't taken any for a few months.

There are lots of high blood pressure medications that work in different ways. Spaw seems to be an expert on them, he once posted a useful survey.

I don't need any medically encouraged depression. I got depression enough, quite naturally thanks.

Maybe I wait until Sat morning to take first one. That way, my partner can monitor how I go on it. I noted that one of he side effects can be facial swelling. Same kind of effect I get from asprin. Bit worrying.

I had a nice experience this morning.

Whilst waiting for the bus a threesome from England were consulting amongst themselves as to whether they had the right change for the fare (the driver doesn't carry cash and it is a dollar and a half each way).

Anyway, I dug in my pocket and brought out three bus tokens and said that I buy these to give to the homeless people but you look pretty far from home so these will get you where you're going.

They were properly appreciative and then when we were going down the road the elderly gentleman asked if he could sit with me and then tried to press a five dollar bill into my hand.

I said, Oh, no. That was my treat.

And he said, Then take it as a donation for the homeless.

And I said, Thank you!

Wasn't that a happy thing! So many visitors seem oblivious to our lives here.

I had a different experience a couple of days before. Again while waiting for the bus.

This time it was a young, kind of scruffy-looking guy who was scrabbling for coins. I gave him a token.

A woman with an older man said, Give him one. I said, What? She said, He doesn't have the correct fare. Give him one too. You have some more.

I cocked my eyebrow at her and said, I buy them.

She said, Oh.

I didn't give him one.

Pick your battles. :)

Well having started this thread with bad news on 27th. August I thought things could only get better. Our neighbour has had her husbands funeral & last night gave birth to her daughter, a healthy 5lb 81/2oz. Both are doing fine.
The bad news for the week is a father & daughter both lost there lives Saturday morning while at home. The police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. He has left behind a wife & 4 other children. Although I don't know the family personally you can not help wonder how they will ever get over there loss. Prayers were said at church for them & offers of help made. The daughter had only left the local secondary school in the summer & counseling is being made avalible today for anyone who wishes to use it.
May all our thoughts be with this family.

Found a lump in my left breast last week, I am sure it is nothing more than a cyst but better to get it checked out early.

Thought I would revive this thread & let you know that the lady with the boys & baby that lost her husband was the first to decorate her house for Christmas, so maybe should call this thread -things are improving-but then the bad luck started again.
Mum was given an increase in her medication by the doctors which ended up with her in I.C.U. for three days as the amount built up & overdosed her, thankfully she has recovered & now home.
My personal problem is going to be funny to some of you,I went on THE WALK FOR WELL BEING last Thursday- lovely stroll around some streets & along some footpaths then across some meadows & back to the start - only 45 minutes. About halfway I felt a pain through my heel & thought my sock must have bunched up in my boot so hobbled on. Got home & the pain got worse so visited the Doctor on Friday to be told I have a Plantar Fasciitis- inflammation of the heel tenons to the toes- must rest as much as possible, take strong anti-inflammatories & pain killers, should be better in six to eight weeks but could take a year & need physio & steroid injections. So no more walks, dancing or drinking over Christmas & New Year.

Patsy, meant to ask if you are reading this, I hope you got good news when you visited the Doctor back in September?

Thank you for asking, yes I had an appointment at the local Breast Clinic near me and the lump turned out not to be anything too sinister and easy to remove. What worried me was that it happened before and for some silly reason I thought that the first one was a warning sign for something coming back later. Luckily it was just a large cyst, just one of those things that I am going to be prone to but easily be dealt with. Hope anyone who finds any kind of lump will make that appointment with their GP and not be afraid to go, men too. The worry can be worse than what it might not be, if you see what I mean?

Sorry to hear about your foot and hope it gets better quickly for you soon, it could not have come at a worse time! I will drink a toast of sherry to you on Christmas mid-morning.

Thank you Patsy - glad your news was not the bad news it could have been. If you know of Judy Dinning from the band REal Time you may have heard her news was bad but appears to be recovering well.

For anyone who has not heard, sorry if it has been, Judy Dinning (Real Time & Jez Lowe Bad Pennies) passed away earlier this month. Condolences to all family & friends.
