According to Yahoo News, Charlie the smoking chimp has died....of natural causes, not of smoking. Charlie was a zoo chimp in South Africa who became famous for smoking cigarettes tossed to him by human visitors. If you watch videos of Charlie smoking, he handles the cigarettes just the way a person would, and obviously really enjoys taking a drag, then exhaling the smoke in a theatrical manner.

His health seems to have been unimpaired by the habit.

Chongo here. We had a wake at Duffy's Bar last night for poor Charlie the Smokin' Chimp. There was not a dry eye in the house. Everybody lit up one in his honor at midnight and the place was blue with smoke. The thing that really hurts my heart is that Charlie had to spend his whole life cooped up in a zoo, held prisoner, and gawked at by dumb human rubes who would toss him a cigarette now and then. What an injustice! Still, you can see in the film that Charlie's spirit was not broken and he found ways to enjoy his incarceration and walk tall and proud. Charlie will not be forgotten.

Hmmm. From the look of the smoke, Charlie didn't inhale. How does one become physically addicted without inhaling?

That is not a claim I have heard before, Susan. Not for smoke. Users of snuff and plug tobacco, of course, can develop a dependence so you may be right.

There are other ways of bein' addicted than just the physical, Ebbie. You got yer behavioural and yet habit-based addictions too, and yer emotional addictions, right? I seen a lot of that in this town. But the important thing about Charlie was that he really enjoyed his smokes and he had a good time. Everybody's got a few addictions, trust me. But are they enjoyin' themselves? That's the real question.

I'm aware of that, Chongo (I don't believe it! I am speaking to a fantasmagorical being.). When I quit smoking, the physical part was fairly easily done.

Yeah...the physical part is easy. It's the mental part that's hard to beat. The way I see it, I am addicted to...let's see...

- Guns. I love 'em.
- Whisky. Ditto.
- Cigars. Cuban if I can get 'em.
- Bananas, mangos, and banana dacquiris.
- Danger. It keeps me from gettin' bored.
- Nice lookin' Chimpettes.
- Goin' to the baseball games.
- Watchin' boxin' matches.
- Cars that are fast and that you can shoot from pretty easy with a tommy gun if you have to. The modern cars ain't near as good that way as the old ones were, though they are fast.
- Classy human dames with really loooong legs, and a discriminatin' sense of taste, not to mention a healthy respect fer themselves. NO shrinkin' violets, please!

I got no intention of givin' up any of these addictions until I am lyin' in a coffin.

Good observation, Jack. You're right, Charlie does look like he should be part of the Rolling Stones...he bears a strong resemblance to both Keith Richard and Ron Wood, I think.
