Subject: RE: BS: No more CPR-now it's CAB - emergency med From: EBarnacle Date: 18 Oct 10 - 10:00 PM The theory is that the compressions will move enough air to keep the victim from dying completely and, being uninterrupted, will have a better chance of restarting the heart. |

Subject: RE: BS: No more CPR-now it's CAB - emergency med From: open mike Date: 19 Oct 10 - 02:59 AM the current directions call for 30 chest compressions for each 2 ventilations..they discovered that is how many "pumps" it takes to circulate blood around the body...and when the pressure is let up from the chest it automatically draws in air |

But for adults the chest compressions are enough. Part of the push for this is to get people who are scared of the mouth-to-mouth part to be willing to do the chest part. Anybody remember the song about mouth to mouth resuscitation good for the country good for the nation nothing a-quickens your respiration like a little ol' bit of that sweet sensation that mouth to mouth (gasp) resuscitation... |

Subject: RE: BS: No more CPR-now it's CAB - emergency med From: maeve Date: 19 Oct 10 - 09:56 AM My First Aid trainer urged us to use Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" to get the pacing right. It takes some strength and endurance. More information here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27221281/ |

Subject: RE: BS: No more CPR-now it's CAB - emergency med From: VirginiaTam Date: 19 Oct 10 - 10:55 AM someone with adrenal dysfunction may also have severe osteoporosis, especially in the ribs.... something to think about it is possible Andie's father when he was administering CPR crushed her rib cage and punctured heart/lungs, which I think is why the doctor at hospital did not require an autopsy when one normally would have been called for... he wanted to save her father the grief that he may have contributed to impossibility of reviving her. they started her heart 3 times but could not keep it going. so it depends upon the patient.. for the very elderly, people with adrenal dysfunction, etc. chest compression may not be the best thing and it definitely (for any patient) needs to be done with the utmost care. |

Subject: RE: BS: No more CPR-now it's CAB - emergency med From: EBarnacle Date: 19 Oct 10 - 12:34 PM Once, when I was in the Renal division at my hospital, we had a patient go into heart failure while on the dialysis machine. We kept him hooked up to the machine for circulation and to maintain blood temperature and did chest compressions. Even though we broke a few ribs, we had him back and beating before they could get the defibrillator to him. We broke a couple of ribs but he survived until another heart attack took him off. |
