Forgive me for adding this besides linking in the trick-or-treat thread. I got intrigued with some mention from the UK folk here about lanterns made from turnips; I had never heard of that. I had to try it, and came up with this stroke of genius, or dementia, or whatever.

The other Jack for this year is more commonplace.

Those are awesome!! Micca told me they aren't really "turnips" as we know them, they are Rutabagas which, to me, still look like a turnip, though a little larger and I see they are a "yellow" "Swede" turnip. Anyway, well done, you!

it seems we recently discussed these root crops--perhaps in a recipe thread with parsnips, turnips, swedes, rutabagas, kohlrabi, etc.

This year I got a pumpkin of some sort which is perfectly flesh colored with what appears to be peanut shells growing out of the pumpkin.

It looks like one of those rare tropical diseases.

Donuel: I've heard that pumpkins, gourds, squash, etc., can cross-pollinate, and when they do, you can get weird, deformed pumpkins.

Are there any gourds growing in your neighborhood?
