Subject: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 23 Nov 10 - 08:55 PM What chess "programs" do you like? I have not played chess for a number of years. My chess board still sits on the dining room table in play but inert since my best childhood friend shot himself. We played over the years by letter, phone and then email thousands of miles away from each other. When he killed himself, I stopped playing. Never played since except for a few drunken nights when I tried "Titans" in my MS games. It kinda sucks. Fuckin prick made it worse than a stalemate... when I get to heaven I am gonna kick his ass for that. Or, better yet, take his queen, bishops, rooks, and one knight and then run his ass around the squares in agony... heaven my ass. I miss him. Dunno if I could ever play another human gain, So, what computer chess is cool? |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 23 Nov 10 - 10:34 PM With that opening, it looks like you're going for a fast 4 move checkmate...no such luck..I ought to play ya'! GfS |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Nov 10 - 10:37 PM Computer chess will keep your mind alert but my mother at the age of 93 has been playing with a teenaged neighbor for the past few years as well, and it works well for her. She used to play chess with father but never took the game seriously until he retired. Then she worked her game up and when she first won a game he couldn't believe it. He soon learned that her win was not a fluke, and he certainly took her a whole lot seriously as a player after that. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Nov 10 - 11:51 PM I miss playing chess. Used to play a lot in high school and college. Haven't had anyone around who plays it. My son was learning, but we never followed through. Like gnu, my board is out on a table in the living room. Ignored. Maybe I'll set it up this week and see if anyone notices over the holiday. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:07 AM Rapparee: "What's wrong with being quick and merciful?" Because you were also predictable...so it might not be so 'quick'..in fact, while you are 'plotting' a 'secret strategy'...that isn't a secret,....somebody is allowing you to be deluded, till they come up out of no where, and whoop your ass! Good guess, wasn't it? Maybe we should play....... ...but no crying.... GfS |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Rapparee Date: 24 Nov 10 - 11:03 AM How about whining, screaming, and wetting my pants? |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 24 Nov 10 - 12:59 PM I used to play lots. I haven`t been involved with the game for decades--well, since about the time I saw somewhere that the system of recording moves had changed. Now, I`m lost. Anyway, just for the helluvit, I`ll play black to Rapparee`s white and respond P to Q4. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:17 PM Ooo... this might be fun to watch. And no cheatin you lads. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:43 PM I know. Hell, it`s been so long since I`ve played a game I will only be able to carry the first five or six moves in my head. Then I`m gonna require a board with the pieces set up. I hope it`ll be OK if I look through Uncle Bobby`s old notes as we play. (He passed away a few years ago in Iceland.) |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:46 PM That's not cheating. Studying strategies is not cheating. Cheating is when you have a heavy duty software package that you can use to analyse the game. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Rapparee Date: 24 Nov 10 - 07:04 PM Keep in mind that I have to keep this in mind, as there is no chessboard or pieces here. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 24 Nov 10 - 07:29 PM I haven't played for ages. A lack of willing opponents, mainly - I'm not all that good, just average, but found a distinct lack of enthusiasm on the part of others when I discovered that I could play any number of opponents simultaneously, but not in my head, and no better than I could do one game at a time .... Also what probably intimidated them was the fact that I could only do this trick for 'speed chess' - if I tried to actually consciously 'think' about the moves, I did even worse... One Junior State Champion could easily beat me, but was too terrified to even try to play me 2 games at once, he admitted. Could only focus his intelligence in one way, he admitted. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Donuel Date: 24 Nov 10 - 07:37 PM Tragic associations can make sll sorts of problems like chess and the suicidal friend association making playing chess a bad association. One way to break it is redefine what your friend did with you other than chess. For example he used to swear, but that does not mean you will never swear again. Of course it could be anything. He used to fart but that does not mean... |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Rapparee Date: 25 Nov 10 - 08:01 PM It's still someone else's move, I think. Remember, I play by Milwaukee rules, hammered out long ago: 1. Upon a capture, both players must drive a toast to each other. 2. Upon a check, ditto. 3. All disputes are settled by saber, following the rules of Alfred Hutton. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 25 Nov 10 - 08:17 PM My winning move is, when all looks hopless, hopless? no, that's checkers... HOPELESS! yep, that's me.... Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 26 Nov 10 - 04:44 PM Maybe I was incorrect. Fun? RAP... YOUR MOVE! Shake a leg. Get the lead out. Elst I might have to watch golf on the telly. 999 has made a questionable counter with his FIRST move and you must respond simply because he has given you the advantage. BTW 999, quite the bold challenge you daring blade. |

I salute youse guys eh. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 26 Nov 10 - 06:24 PM Hmmmm... Friday night and I am all giddy about Rap and 999 playing chess here in The Café. Sad but true. Maybe there is a chess tourney starting up here? Anyway, I shall truly enjoy this first game of the series of the first match. As long as Rap doesn't run anyone through. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Rapparee Date: 26 Nov 10 - 10:08 PM Through WHAT? A sausage grinder? A tunnel? A gauntlet? Tomorrow I shall return home and set up my chess board (hand-carved from stone in Korea, with the pieces in traditional Korean dress) so I know what the heck is going on. Shortly thereafter I shall perform my usual tactics and then surrender. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: ollaimh Date: 28 Nov 10 - 12:54 PM i tried that chess program and its a killer i played twelve hames and squeeked out an end game win with an extra pawn once and got up a piece for tw pawns once and squeeked it out to another endgame win but got absolutely gollywhumped the other ten games. that program will hone your tactics hey gnu, join me at the cafe in st geaoge some day for a few games live. i need chess buddies. the club in dieppe is way too tournement oriented for me. you have to commit to comming every wednesday for five or six weeks or forfeit. otherwise i know of no chess players in moncton--so lets start a chess afternoon or evening. that cafe at st geaoge and hmm east of weldon west of the tracks. on the north side. great coffee, nice people now all we need is chess!! |
