Subject: BS: How old are we all?
From: Will Fly
Date: 12 Jan 11 - 04:47 AM

Looking down the threads over several days, I've seen obits of 'Catters who've died, well-wishing threads for those unwell or recovering from illness, birthday threads of 'Catters of a good age - and I've thought to myself: what's the current age profile of Mudcat?

Not that it matters - I'm just curious - but I'm sure that our overall age demographic influences the way we think of the world, and the musical world in particular. And the older members will bring a vast sum of musical knowledge to the debates.

Well, I'm sure we won't get all the thousands of Mudcatter members to respond to this, but perhaps we'll see what happens...

Shall I start? 67 in 2011.

(Lady Mudcatters are allowed to shave their age.)

I said AGE!

Well, everybody's entitled to be a bit vague in this matter. Let's say I'm older than 64 and younger than 66.

I wonder if anything has changed. We did a survey long, long ago from which I believe we discovered that the average age was 52. If I were to bet, I'd bet that the median aged along with a lot of us.

I'm 64 BTW.

My son believes I'm somewhere around 140...

My cat thinks I'm his father.....I can't go on!

Once, when collecting my small children from school, when they had been learning about history, I was greeted with "Were you alive in the 1870s?"

As my grandmother (whose mother WAS alive in the 1870s) used to say, "I'm as old as my little finger and a little bit older than my teeth."

I was 67 on Greek "Ochi" Day. I always wondered why they had a public holiday on my birthday. I feel 25 till I look in the mirror or do a couple of hours gardening.

Man, I gotta quit hangin' with you old fogies. Oh, I wish I could say that and mean it. Alas, time and gravity are starting to win the battle. All the aches from all the breaks when I was young enough to think I would always be the same. Sixty-two this April.

hi

I am older than most have stated here !!!

I am old enough to remember that Folk Music on the BBC was Elton Hayes & his small Guitar and that Val Doonican was a drummer in a small band that I did not rate.

Cheers

then 12 months after that I'll be 60 & get my Senior's Card - I can barely wait for the travel concession - one ticket a day to travel all over the metropolitan area & even hundreds of kms. into the county

and all for $2.50 per day.

Spent something like two weeks wondering how it could be possible that I was coming up to my 70th birthday (3 days ago). Then I blinked, went "waitaminnit", and realized it was just my 69th birthday. As others have said, I really don't believe my own age until I look in the mirror.

I note that only two responders are chronologically older than I so far.

Like Robyn, I feel like a teenager...from the chin up. It's what's below the shoulders that's breaking down. Some days I feel about 90, but than I subtract my mental age. That brings me to my actual age of 71, and getting older each day.

BTW, when I read, today, of the passing of David Nelson (Ozzie and Harriet), I did have a brief pang of old age creeping up.

V. Tam,

Some friends of mine made a pilgrimage to Spike Milligans Grave and found that in fact the family were refused permission to inscribe "I told you I was ill" on his headstone as he had requested, and in the end permission was only given on condition that it was written in Irish.

So Spikes intention that his grave should bring cheer to visitors of otherwise sombre place went unfufilled in the end.

They finally managed to muzzle him I guess.

Just to add a little music into a BS thread, I wrote this back in in December, as a slow, melancholy blues:

Looking out the window on a winters day
Wondering what the future might hold.
Will I still remember what I'm trying to say
Now I've got to 60 years old.
People in their 60s tell me life is fine.
Maybe, but I think I'm gonna bide my time.
60 always seemed to be the end of the line
When I was only 59

Should I act with dignity, be wise and sage?
Or live a life that's wild and free?
Try to find a woman who is half my age?
I don't think that is really me.

I'd like to think that when I live this life of mine,
I will be maturing like a fine old wine
Instead of growing old and grey before my time.
I think I'll stick at 59, yeah,
I wish I was still 59
So if they if they ask me
I'll say I'm only 59

According to the genealogical charts I've been able to construct, my (paternal) grandfather was the longest-lived male "ancestor" in the tree.

Assuming that I live that long, I'll take his title in about 7 months - unless I can dig up another ancestor who was actually healthy.

If I can hold the title for ten years or so, I might consider breaking with family tradition and coming down out of the tree, although the ***** I see down in the grass doesn't suggest a really strong incentive to join the crowds there.

I very rarely think about how old I am. In fact, if someone asks me my age I have to work it out.
First I have to remember what year it is now, which keeps changing.
Then I have to remember which year I was born, which is easier, as it usually stays the same.
Then I have to subtract one from the other, and adjust according to whether I have had a birthday recently . . . is it worth it?
Only if it means I will qualify for something worthwhile, otherwise I really can't be bothered.

my old mum is nearly 80,
and too stubborn to move closer to us,
even though she agrees it's a better option as she gets older.

Which means I need to respond asap to today's 'emergency' phone call
and get on a train to go and retune her freeview TV box

[which has 'mysteriously' suddenly lost all her favourite channels],

so she won't miss "Coronation St." Omnibus on the weekend..

Oh well, I intended visiting anyway, but I really needed tomorrow and Friday free
to fix our bathroom shower that the wife's just broken..

But reading this thread,
if I visualise my mum as she is now at her age,
it sure helps put all the usual mudcat argumentative crankiness and cantankerous wilful confusion & misunderstanding
into much clearer perspective....

..anyone else need their box retuned ????

When my mum turned 70, she said there was a 40 year old inside, but her body wouldn't let it out. Like everyone else, I feel about 30 in my head, but the rest of my body begs to differ. I very rarely get more nthan an occasional cold, but I now have "conditions".

There's a wonderful little book called "Growing Old Disgracefully" by Rohan Candappa. It's my manual for when I have to admit to myself the passage of time. I have bought it for several of my friends. It doesn't deny ageing: it gives ideas for making the most of it, and turning it to one's advantage!

My late husband had a tee shirt (now in the possession of my nearly 32 year old son) which says "I came into this world fat and bald, and I intend to go out the same way". He did.

I used to have a badge with "39 and holding"...I think I need an upgrade!

Beer that was a fun link even better than an Astrological guide. According to that I am an old dog and under the Chinese sign of the Goat! It was interesting to see the estimated date that my parents got frisky Spring, Spring Spring. There is another section about the meaning of names which is intersting too, apparently my shortened name means something slightly different to the full name.

Today is my Mother's birthday. Had she lived she would be very grouchy. (111.) She died young, 85. That's young compared to many of my ancestors; they lived very long lives. My Uncle told me they had to shoot his grandmother to start a grave yard.

83 in June

"I have led a good life, full of peace and quiet
I shall have an old age, full of rum and riot.
I have been a good boy, wed to work and study
I shall be an old man, ribald coarse and bloody.

I have never slit throats, even when I yearned to.
Never sang dirty songs that my fancy turned to.
I have been a nice boy, and done what was expected
I shall die and old bum, loved but unrespected."

Still going strong, but as my middle-aged sone reminds me, odor isn't everything.

The exact middle of the year is June 30/July 1. ????

There are 4 months with 30 days. Two are in the first half and two in the last half of the year.

There are 7 months with 31 days. Three are in the first half and four are in the last half.

The remaining month in the first half of the year has 28 or 29 days.

January through June is 181 or 182 days.

July through December is 184 days.

The exact midpoint of the year is at 182.5 (noon on July 1) or 183 days (midnight July 1 or beginning July 2). It's never "between" June 30 and July 1 (on the calendar).

#$!%@$ old people that forget how to count.

(Or maybe Steve's a kid that hasn't learned how yet? He's still one of the youngsters here.)

I bow to that, John. I worked it out decades ago when someone told me my birthday, June 15, was the exact middle of the year, being the middle of the 6th month. I knew that wasn't right so I worked it out. I posted without rechecking my arithmetic, which was accurate then but imperfectly remembered now! As for old people counting, remember there are three kinds of people, those who can count and those who can't.

75 my last birthday. It occurred to me when I adopted my latest dog that this could be the last one I ever have. He is only 2 years old and should live to be round about 15. Logically speaking, I should live to be 84 or so.

My daughter just had her 49th birthday. Now,that is startling. Previous to this one, her 29th birthday was of the most significance to me because I remember so clearly when I turned 29. But 49? That is recent history!

Someone once said that no matter how old you live to be, the first 20 years will always be the longer half.

62 this week.

Still can't play the guitar as good as I'd like. I've gone off reading, which is okay - it fits in with my eyes not being as good as they should. Worryingly, I've gone off the idea of an afterlife. I don't think even if i lived into eternity the guitar playing would get right.

I should have attempted something easier in life. More in line with my capablities. Perhaps I would have been a success working in a burger bar - I can make sausage sandwiches.

Welll... in my bio at www.onetinleg.com (which brought me to the previous thread) I'm using the line "with the onset of late middle age..." Been dining out on that one for the last seventeen years. I was twenty in 1960 and played backup guitar with Pete Stampfel and Jim Kweskin at the Gaslight Cafe on MacDougal Street. The day job was as Murray the K's board operator at WINS before the all-news format. Memories, anyone? Gee, that makes me 72.

I'm 63 in July.

Yesterday I walked about 10 miles and am feeling no ill effects today at all.

The day before my GP told me that I am a bit unfit but healthy. He also told me that he is fit but not particularly healthy. We occasionally meet when I am walking and he is cycling. He says that I 'amble' too much and that if I want to be fitter I need to get out of breath more. While I'm ambling along I might think about that!

Apart from all of that life has never been as sweet and as exciting than it is now ... I never imagined that 63 would be like this!

Example of Maine humor:

A rather large woman was trying to board a local bus but the doors were designed for normal people, so she was kinda stuck. The driver smirked at her and she got huffy. She said to him "If you were half a man, you would help me." He said, "If you were half a woman, you wouldn't need help."

The other day I reported (as I do every month) to the COAG Clinic, to check blood coagulation time, because I take Warfarin. I had a new (to me) nurse to do the minimal interview and finger-stick for a drop of blood and run it on the little computerized analyzer.

As I left the examination room, she said, "There's NO WAY you're eighty!"

Without looking back toward her, I said, "You'll have to talk to my mother about that, Nicole!"

Well, it seemed witty at the time. I guess you had to be there.

Now I know why I feel at home in Mudcat - people of around my age a-plenty.

65, but not for much longer - get to middle age next month.

Next Tuesday is my late Dad's centenary, another way to tell it aint what it used to be.

If I were so fat that I couldn't get through a door I would own the problem and do something about it.

It's a JOKE! let's not make a federal case out of it.

Yankee, as long as the day in October isn't the square of 5 I'll be fine. One person stealing my birthday is enough thank you.

And you stole me from my innocent ways, and made me sit in a pub, drink beer and sing folk songs. Not that it's a bad thing...

I'd love to take credit for that, but I thought it was Bob/asirovedout who was responsible for your corrupintroduction to pub-sings.

As for your birth date, it's safe from me -- mine is within the first week of the month.

Now old enough for concessions in some European countries where they don't kick in until 5 years after here. My own bus pass is coming up for 5-year renewal at the end of this month, but I still get suspicious looks from the drivers when I run for the bus.
Following the advice given in song when I retired in 2006 - (may you stay) "Forever Young".

G'day all,

I see that my friend Sandra in Sydney is looking forward to access to the PET (Pensioner Excursion Ticket) ... allows all day access to local (New South Wales ... particularly Sydney) public transport for small bundle of coins ...

I ought to have been using one of them since last year ... except for some foolish addiction to working ... and, if I'm counted as still working if & when I cash in my several years owed Long Service Leave (let alone >2½ of retained sick leave ... I mightn't be travelling on little white tickets until the end of this decade!

Then again ... I just mightn't ... be ...

My wife, sick of seeing me running after buses, bought a dog.
It now runs after them for me!

We had a dog before this one,but it used to chase parked cars.
The vet's bills were costing us a fortune! And the dog lost his "no claims bonus".

We gave it to a kind neighbour we coudn't stand.

And now I'm confused. THANKS YORKSHIREYANKEE

"64. Hows the average doing? I started out feeling old and then got younger"

I make a constant joke about the fact I'm only allowed at folk clubs because of the average. I think people are fed up of hearing it now, but when did that ever stop me.

"Hey DrugCrazed. You are in for quite a ride. Mudcatters are great but they are also fucking nuts. Welcome to the club and enjoy yourself. But remember that resistance is futile."

Varies from person to person.

Go to whichever type of medic is your preference and find out what it's about in your case. Go from not knowing to knowing.

TOO OLD TO CUT THE MUSTARD
(Bill Carlisle)

The Carlisles - 1951
Ernest Tubb & Red Foley - 1952
Rosemary Clooney & Marlene Dietrich - 1952
Buck Owens & Buddy Alan - 1972

When I was young, I had an automobile
I'd scoot myself right under that wheel
I had to fight the gals off with a stick
But now they say, "Oh, he makes me sick"

He's too old, too old
He's too old to cut the mustard anymore
He's a-gettin' too old, he's done got too old
He's too old to cut the mustard anymore

When I was young I had a lot of pep
I could get around, I didn't need no help
But since I'm old and a-gettin' gray
The people all look at me and say

He's too old, too old
He's too old to cut the mustard anymore
He's a-gettin' too old, he's done got too old
He's too old to cut the mustard anymore
