It's not sappy, Captain. A little weird when you sing it to Max and you're both plowed.

I may have done a sappy love song at some time in the past, but if so, I can't recall it at this moment...

PLEASE don't sing "Leavin' On a Jet Plane" around me, okay? ;-)

Palace Grand, especially Kendall's rendiution, is world-class. Not sappy exactly but deeply sentimental.

My choice is "The Kind of Love You Never Recover From", by Christine Lavin.

I'm afraid the sappiest love song I know is one of mine. Heck, most of mine are sappy, but one is sappier than all the others.

The first verse:

I'd write a love song, if I could,
To sing to you, you know I would.
I'd try to tell you how you make me feel so fine,
If I only wrote one line.

See?

If I was John Denver's wife, kendall, I would've kicked him for writing that song... ;-) ...probably in a painful spot.

When I feel in danger of being menaced by sappy love songs, I just put on Bob Dylan singing "Wiggle, Wiggle", and the fear goes away... (grin)

Uhoh. Kendall, your 'Palace Grand' is the song I call 'Lady Mary' and was one of the first 2 I ever sang in public. We pinched it from Joan Baez back in 1963.
We thought it was luverly. (We were only teenagers at the time - I guess that explains it.)

I didn't notice until it was too late that I forgot one verse.

There in his palace so grand, on a flower strewn bed he lies,
His beautiful lids are closed o'er his sad dark beautiful eyes;
And among the mourners who mourn, why should I a mourner be?
For I was nothing to him, though he was the world to me.

Little Hawk, are you telling me John Denver wrote Palace Grand?

I know many guys who would never sing a woman's song for fear of being branded a sissy. Well, if anyone calls me a sissy, I'll brain him with my purse.

From: Darowyn

It's one of mine and I mean every word every time I sing it.

"Told you so a thousand times,
I'll tell you 'bout a million more.
With everyone I've loved before,
It was you that I was looking for.
Ghosts can rise up from the past,
And their shadows can be cold and black,
But when love saves the best for last,
There'll be no going back."

("Going Back" by Darowyn)

And if you can't be sappy or sentimental about the love of your life, then you have not found him or her (yet)!

Cheers
Dave

There is a video of that night. An exchange of hats; a plaintive love song sung into poor Max's limpid eyes (actually droopy might describe it better). Max seated on the floor gazing adoringly into Kendall's baby blues. And there were many witnesses. Most in the same condition.
The Getaway is wonderful.

Hey Bobert: (I have slightly different version)

DARLIN' LITTLE JOE

What will the birds do, mother, in the spring
When the little brown birds come to my door?
They'll hop on the window, they'll hop on the step
Asking why Little Joe roams no more.
Mother, love Tiger, love Tiger for me
For you know he will mourn for me true,
Show him my coat so he will not forget
For then his master will be dead;
Speak to him often and gently of Joe
And pat him on his black shaggy head.

What will ole Thomas, the gardner say
When you ask him for flowers for me?
He'll give you the roses he tended so long
The first fairest flowers on the tree.
What will the kitten do, mother, all alone
Will she in her frolic run and play?
Or lie on the rug by the side of my bed
As she did when I once went away.

Poor Uncle Ben in a far away camp
Will be sad o'er the letters that you write,
He'll say, mother dear, little Joe's gone to rest
Marching nearer and nearer the line.
And you, Mother dear, will you miss me for a while
But up in Heaven, no larger will I grow
And many kind angels will know when you ask
At the gate for your own little Joe.

Strong on the sap factor, Bill... Weak on the love factor... I mean, didn't ya ever get eat up in love with a girl and either write or borrow a song that purdy much said what you were feelin'??? That's what we are talkin' about here... Not sentimental stuff which, sniff, do get me a little weepy... But boy-girl love songs... Unless one4 is gay then it's boy-boy or girl-girl songs... No matter, that Kathy Young song that I been doin' going back, oh shit, 40 some years works fir any of the above combinations I've thrown out...

I mean, write a love song to Rita, gol danged it... I mean, she's about as purdy and nice as they come... Yer never too old to write a sappy love song... Heck, I wrote one fir the P-Vine... Didn't hurt at all... Purdy decent song, too...

Love songs and poetry....still get the job done.

Livin' each day,
Got you on my mind
You know how it is gal
It is certainly fine.

Your memory lingers
Like soft running fingers
Flowing slowly,
Moving only
Through my mind.

The rocks and the redwoods
The sky and the seas
They all bring back memories
Fond ones of thee

Of nights in December
Of days in September
Flowing softy,
Blowing gently,
Through your brown hair.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Of Course there is also the Coarse Song of the Chorus Ghetto>

Nappy, nappy hair,
Eyes like a frog
Bend over baby
Gonna do ya like a dog.

"Sap" is, after all, a relative thing. (You haven't met my relatives!)

But seriously, one person's song of warm heartfelt emotion, and the like, can definitely be another's dry-heave-inducing treacly ooze.

But to stay on-topic: I won't touch "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" ever, ever again. Ever.

Jay

Women like sappy love songs. If you don't have one in your repertoire, that could be why you're sleeping alone again tonight.
With my band, I like to do Richie Valens' old ballad We Belong Together.
Every Getaway I look forward to Lucy singing Sonny. I can't really tell if it's sappy or not, but something about the refrain and Lucy's heartbroken voice make me tear up.

The fiddler I play with usually come out with the line 'What a load of sentimental old tosh' when I sing Pete Abbott's 'Windy Harbour' but he really really hated Beth Neilen Chapman's 'Time Won't Tell'and I daen't play it again when he's there.

Mine is Long Long Before Your Time, by Irish songwriter Johnny McEvoy, Dad talking to Daughter re his late wife, Surprisingly good song for such soppy lyrics (I take it sappy is the same as soppy/gushy)
I wouldn't do Honey but have to confess, it was a favourite of mine when I was much younger ;)

One magic moment was all it took
From that momment, well, I loved you so
Now that I found you, never gonna' let you go so...

Say it, well say it again
It sound so good say it one more time again
If you mean it, say it again
The hard parts over
Let the loving times begin...

Thanks for including my song in your 'sappiest of all time' -- I'm honored! Ironically it is my most requested song, so what does that tell you? It's the end of civilization as we know it.

While traveling in the middle of the night the other night listening to xm, "Honey" came on the radio. Now that's my favorite all time sappiest. Holy crap, who thought that was a good idea for a song?

While on tour in Tucson this fall I met the woman who inspired "MacArthur Park." I was telling my road manager about her . . . when "MacArthur Park" came on the radio. How spooky is that? We were driving from Rhode Island to Westchester County in a Prius with a slammin' sound system and cranked it WAY up. Bliss.

I don't think I should tell you her name, but she is now married to the cousin of one of the most famous singers to ever come out of Tucson. And she is still a real beauty. I asked her what the sweet green icing was about and the cake in the rain -- she didn't really understand those lines, either. But it sure was fun to meet her and talk about that song.

Christine
Welcome to Mudcat!

Can we really call MacArthur Park sappy, though? Its strangeness transcends the sappy category and sends it right into monumentally silly. Where else could you find a song that not only has Richard Harris putting his heart and soul into lyrics like "someone left the cake out in the rain", accompanied by the marshalled forces of the London Symphony Orchestra, spliced into a mid-song psychedelic-pop instrumental romp, and ending with two or three false codas that finally result in Richard being acoustically morphed into Minnie Ripperton on an end note that only German Shepherds can hear? Ridiculously sublime, says I.

Christine:

Mea Culpa. "THe Kind of Love..." is my favorite love song, bar none, just so ya know. By the time I wrote that post I had forgotten that the thread was about "sappiness". While it is a very sentimental song in the best sense of the word, it is not sappy. So I'm sorry I put my vote in the wrong thread. Thanks for writing it!
