Both Keith Olberman and Rachael Maddow have been fired less than two days after Comcast purchased NBC...

These two shows were the last 2 vestiges of democracy leaving our country now 100% void of any voices from the left side of the political divide...

Thinks Germany here in the 30s!!!

The right wing has now control of every media outlet in the country, bar none!!!

This is no exaggeration, folks!!!

Boycott Comcast...

Pickett their Board of Directors houses...

Write letters....

Make their lives miserable...

Remember the old poem that ended "and then they came for me"???

I call on every progressive to do something... Anything!!! I mean, the shot has been fired over the bow!!!

If we allow this to go down then they will be shutting down websites next... You can take that to the bank!!!!

Act!!!

Bobert, how do you know RM's been fired? Nothing I can find on google, (at least not yet). I really hope it's not true. I guess RM is supposed to be on Bill Maher tonight, maybe she'll fill us in. Dirty Bastards! There are still a few progressives on MSNBC, how long will they last? Thanks, BlueJay

Article in LA Times, Jan 22, 2011, James Rainey: On the Media: Comcast's local-news pledge rings hollow.
NBC stations, such as KNBC-TV, broadcast "no-calorie "news" such as "The Biggest Loser," "America's Got Talent," and "Law and Order."
Rainey deplores the lack of "meat and potatoes" coverage of "what's happening in our neighborhoods, our schools, our city halls."
"As part of its union with NBC, Comcast has pledged to add 1000 hours of news and public affairs programming a year across the 10 stations that it owns and operates... that would break down to just 16 minutes per day per station, according to public interest groups."
Rainey is cynical about the promise, "the lineup of shows on the drawing board....will be fluffy, advertiser-friendly fare."

The problem is not only the lack of your left-wing programming, but the lack of good right-wing programming as well.

Of course, to advertisers, "No news is good news."

Comcast is my cable provider. They specialize in raising fees and cutting services. Recently they informed me that I would have to order a special box to get three of my favorite channels. The box was free, so I ordered it. It came on Friday. I decided to get it set up on Saturday and sit back and rot my brain. It took a while to get it set up. Then I called the number provided, and discovered it would take 45 minutes for the thing to boot up. I waited. It booted not. I called again, listened to the recording, finally got somebody in India, and went through it all again. Waited, called back, this time got somebody from the U.S. and got my service, for four hours, then it went out again. I am decidedly un thrilled with Comcast. I look forward to severing our relationship. But I'll tell you something. If that box and it's kin around town, go out on Suberbowl Sunday a lot of people in India are going to learn a lot of new English words.

Comcast got too big for us to stop years ago. This is HOW these things happen. Their sports programming alone has been too big to stop for years, and people's interest in pretty-pretty HD sports (lust of the eyes) pays big bucks into their coffers.

The barn door needed to be locked long before HD, fiber optics, and the new-tech broadcasting mandated by the FCC..... (no more analog, remember?). Too many just getting the point now. And I do not mean Catters, usually somewhat ahead of these curves, but the mass market.

Q nailed it in one with that post.

`Of course, to advertisers, "No news is good news."`

The only way--other than buying a station--to influence programming is to write the advertisers and let them know of your dissatisfaction, and that due to that dissatisfaction you will not be using their products. Then don`t use their products. Of course, it will inconvenience you when you do that. Likely why so few people do it--boycott. However, if your democracy isn`t worth the effort . . . .

Yeah, I told them I wanted them for my Internet and that I haven't had TV in about 13 years now, but it never occurred to them that this meant that I would have no idea where my TV cable even was, nor did they tell me that they would have to use the TV cable to get me computer Internet... boy, was that a long unexpected time for the installer dude, who every few hours would sigh and cancel another appointment... they had to practically dig it out from under the house and replace all the separate pieces, heh heh, serves them right.

Chris Hayes, subbing for Rachael, said at the end of the program that she would be back on Monday.

It was interesting that immediately after that show, CNN's Anderson Cooper spent the 1st 20 minutes of his show exploring what was going on.
Everyone agrees that 1)it wasn't totally unexpected, 2) Keith will no doubt find a way to state HIS side of it and 3) that MSNBC really needs to keep their basic format that Keith defined.

Here in western Canada, we have a cable provider (internet, telephone and TV) that I am happy with- Shaw Communications.
It is a no contract company, so one is free to drop out, or drop one of the services.
One heck of a lot of channels, arranged in tiers; the HD is extra cost. So are specific sites (foreign, Canadian HBO, specific sports only, etc.) which cost varying fees, depending on the channel. Some sports channels (all hockey, etc., are expensive as the leagues take a big cut, but I get more sports than I want in the basic package).

I have added Aljazeera for $1.75 per month; it compliments the BBC (good!) and the junky CNN news channels as well as CTV and CBC (Canadian networks) which are in the basic package. Of course ABC, NBC, CBS etc. are basic channels as well. One pays a low fee for Fox, MSNBC, etc.

It has a great variety of music channels, so talk-free music of all kinds is available.

Does Comcast and other U. S. services offer similar? Cost? Contract needed? I am asking for a friend who will be transferring to midwest USA.

I have had Comcast, and now have been on DirectTV for almost 2 years. That is one of the 2 major satellite TV providers - the other is Dish. Here in Albuquerque, TV is also available through the phone company (Qwest). Comcast and Qwest both offer a 3-some as you describe; as far as I know, the satellite companies are TV-only. They all have multiple tiers, ranging from the local (broadcast) stations plus a bunch of shopping and religious channels (at about $20/month), to a gazillion channels, mostly useless, for $150+. Each has pay-per-view and a limited choice of free movies available "on demand" (DirectTV requires that you have a DSL modem to access them). Each offers access to multiple-channel packages under Showtime and/or HBO at an extra charge. Each offers additional sports channels at an additional cost. All require (as far as I know) an initial 2-year contract, with no contract extension required...that is, you can quit without any buy-out charge anytime after the first 2 years. Like everything else, there are attractive promotional offers to hook you and reel you in.

Depending on where your friend is going to be, and unless he/she requires cable TV, he might want to look into getting a decent over-the-air antenna and settle for the local broadcast stations. One caution - US TV stations are now required to broadcast digital signals only. I have no idea if the same is true in Canada. If he has an older analog-only set, it will not work in the US without an added converter.

US TV stations are now required to broadcast digital signals only.

Antenna only TV:

With analog, I got 7 decent stations with stable reception.

With digital, I sometimes get 5 for as long as an hour or two before the wind changes and the signal breaks up.

One channel only has about 5 hours per day of "paid commercial announcements" but all the others run to about 14 hours per day, with the rest of the time exclusively devoted to "sports" broadcasting - most of which is blather about games rather than games.

The only channel I can receive with a consistent signal for more than a couple of hours at a time is a Spanish language channel.

I've bought a dictionary, and I'm working on figuring out which of their programs are also "paid advertising."

Direct TV (and Dish) offer Link TV, a wonderful alternative to the trash on MSM.
Democracy Now is worth the price of admission. Amy Goodman can be relied upon
to supply honest news reporting without spin or propaganda.

Sorry to lose Keith but Cenk, Big Ed and Rachel are still intact.

Amy is the best though.

I do have Comcast, because they bought bought out the original franchise in Mongomery County, MD...I now have the 'choice' of switching to Verizon FIOS, but after 7-8 years getting all my connections and email and online storage...plus business cards....etc... tied to Comcast, it would be tedious to change. Besides, Verizon has a spotty record of service, and Comcast does a pretty good job of keeping everything running.
That being said, Comcast keeps raising prices and limiting choices for TV channels. You CANNOT buy channels a la carte....and they put stuff in the premium area that they KNOW will tempt you, even if you only use 5-6 of 100. (I can watch C-Span for the House of Reps. on 3...but the Senate is on 103!) I have a tiny, wonderful digital TV which, a year ago, got hundreds of digital channels with no 'box', and I was able to move it quickly to any of 3-4 locations... but they gradually moved ALL digital channels to scrambled setup, so you MUST rent a 'box' from them to watch, and digital TVs are useless.

Comcast's purchase of NBC REALLY worries & upsets me, as I don't like the idea of their business attitude running the network I have favored.

It's called being between a rock & a hard place...and I have no idea what I will do in the next year.

I almost hate to admit that I own Comcast stock. I bought AT&T, thinking it was a stable investment. Well, AT&T splintered a second time after the Baby Bell split, so I ended up with stock in four different AT&T spinoffs. Comcast bought AT&T's cable operation, and I ended up with an odd lot of Comcast stock that isn't worth selling.

I have AT&T DSL Internet on my home phone line, and it leads me to a pretty good Yahoo gateway. We have Comcast cable Internet at work at the women's center, and the Comcast gateway leads us to FoxNews. I don't like it. I don't like it at all. So yeah, F**k Comcast!!!

"...get more BB Bandwidth and watch all your TV online...."

That is a tempting idea, since I do have decent BB, but I don't have laptop, and the 'comfort level' (as: laying back in my recliner) is a limiting factor. I AM going to research what TV I can get online. I know of Hulu and a couple others, but some channels are not necessarily available

WELL! I 'may' be switching to Verizon after all...I have 3 weeks to decide. They offer a deal that includes phone that would save me $50 a month, with more channels of TV. What to worry about?... they say to allow 4-6 HOURS for installation! Comcast is pluging in the cable modem and going.... IF Verizon now has service that works ok, (they promise fiber-optic all the way), all I have to do is notify everyone and sort out my online storage, where I have for years uploaded stuff to show you all. I would have to change all that as it became necessary.

I don't look forward to anything except smaller bills...

Blow up your TV.

I have analog HD TV. I just got another channel which is all old TV shows such as Bonanza, Rawhide, I love Lucy, The Honeymooners and even Twilight Zone. So I have 2 CBS channels, one is movies and stuff, two ABC channels, one of which is all weather and the other ABC, 3 channel 40's including two music channels and regular NBC and three 49's including regular Fox TV, another Fox channel which is rerun TV shows and movies and now this 49-3..all old TV shows. All of it free; ten channels!

I don't get Fox news but wouldn't watch it anyway. I don't get CNN, or MSNBC but who cares? News is everywhere.

Why anyone pays 70 to 100 a month for TV is beyond me....

I despise Comcast; it's the worst of our corporatocracy...

Love, hg

I had a "bundle" of my phone service and Internet with Charter cable. No television, I detest their operation on television end of things. My bundle was supposed to cost $30 for phone and $30 for Internet each month for 12 months. I ported my house phone from AT&T over to Charter. First bill or two were about $63. Then, they kept adding extra charges to the bill, and if you asked for a refund, it showed on the front page but was always removed on a later page by some new mysterious (but identical) charge. But the 12th month the bill was up to $87. I took the phone away and put it as an account on Sprint, so my house number is now a cell phone in the house. I'll drop it at the end of the two years because I have a cell phone in my pocket already.

My point here is that the telecommunications act that let lots of people sell phone service is carte blanche to rob you blind.

I get over-the-air television only here (way more than 10 channels - I'd guess close to 40). I also subscribe to NetFlix so I get movies in the mail and can stream programs online. No need to fool with Charter or Comcast or any of the others.

Comcast/NBC/Universal Theme Park/Film distributor/silent print news owner, all constitutes a Media Monopoly that will rival FOX while being on the same Uber rich control side as FOX.

The fact that Comcast seeks absolute ownership of media delivery, Universal theme parks and newspaper content, including denial of targeted media in TV and film, should ring bells of anti trust violations.

It does not. The people in charge of enforcing such regulations are probably making more money in a Swiss account from Comcast than from their own salaries. Often the corruption is merely a promise of riches after government service ends.

Remember when Bond and Stock rating companies said bundled mortgage derivitive securites were A+#1 best buy opportunities, get em while they're hot!?
Its the same for the justice dept and regulatory agency directors. When they on the golf course with Comcast reps, the quid quo pro that goes on is criminal...literally.

As much as I like the guy, Obama is merely a caddy to Goldman Sachs.

We are living in the Neo Gilded Age that deep down acts as if this time, there really is no tommorrow.

maybe they know something we don't.
