I may even have to exit the browser to post at all. I copy the message and paste because the only way you find out is when it is too late. I am sure this has been mentioned and probably has to do with precise URL, but even exiting the thread and going back in, or refreshing doen't seem to remedy the problem. |

Can be slow but most of it is down to the USB/PC and the traffic on the net. If you are a peripatetic PCer it is the safest fast way to operate. All my passwords and favourites go with me when I leave. |

Apart from Vista being its usual slow self and there being an excess of disk activity on this machine, I can't see any problems. |

Try switching off JavaScript to test the hypothesis. Since JavaScript is in the responsibility of browsers, switching them may solve the problem. Sometimes it is a trade between speed and security. Microsoft has its own version(s) of Java, but some of them are "optional updates" that you have to ask for. They aren't considered "critical" so they don't update automatically. If you click on the "Microsoft Update" button that should be somewhere on Start button menu, you have the option to "search for available updates" that will show you the options as well as the critical ones. It's possible that you've got an older Java that's stalling on the Google ads(?). Microsoft automatic update only gives you the critical (security related) stuff automatically and you have to look at the optionals for performance related patches. Also, when I had some difficulties that I thought might be "script related" a year or two ago, I ignorantly went direct to Java and updated to their JavaScript. They've automatically prompted me when updates are available, so I've been using "the real one" since and haven't had problems. Although Java was recently "absorbed" by Oracle, I believe the JavaScript updates are still at Java.com or something close to that. John |

My favorite browsers are Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, but I'm having problems with both of them. Google Chrome gets stuck on scrips, and scripts are everywhere nowadays. Interned Explorer is slow to open some Websites, and won't open a link in a new tab or window any more. I think I'll switch to Firefox until Google or Internet Explorer figure out a solution. -Joe- |

Also, Mudcat pages are particularly easy and quick for any browser to render, compared with complicated table structures from other sites. Your post, Steve, of 30 Jan 11 - 02:26 PM therefore indicates some problems on the way between your provider and the Mudcat server (as "routed" by the former). I guess all you can do is wait for better times to come. |

From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Jan 11 - 04:15 PM If this is something new since you added IE8 (which is fairly new) it's possible that you haven't set your default to "delete temp files on closing IE" and are just suffering congestion of your temp space. IE8 has been the subject of a significant amount of web discussion about problems, and as I've been too offended by the hype that doesn't say anything to accept IE8, I still use IE7. I would expect that IE8 still has a "delete files" at Tools | Internet Options where you could (temporarily) clear the temporary internet files to see if this helps. If it does, you'll want to dig into options to make sure that closing IE clears the most offensive crud. You make reference to "when I open a new window." IE8 allows "new tabs" I believe, and there should be far less "overhead" (temp space used) if you use a new tab rather than a new window. That may be what you're doing, but if not I'd suggest you try "tabbing" rather than "windowing." Although most mudcat "casual browsing" doesn't require it, it's almost a necessity to get (and keep) your cookies, and to avoid interference from various flavors of AV/AntiSPAM/AntiCookie features of common "browser protections," that you have mudcat.org in your browser settings as an "always allow" site. (Tools | Internet Options | Privacy Tab | Sites Button - in IE7, and probably same for IE8 (?)) You've probably already set mudcat there since you obviusly haven't tossed your cookie, but it might be worth checking. With Vista & IE7 I've had no significant problems, with the exception of an occasional "stall" on a thread loading at about the time that the brit catters might be taking their morning coffee break (08:00 - 13:00 UK time?) and the traffic gets very dense. (Their afternoon break seems to be more brief and less intense. ;-)) John |

So there should rarely be a "long" thread to download. Thanks! I don't think it's Vista either - I've used it for Mudcat without issues for years. This is just the last few days. I do use the little "d" all the time but it makes no difference. My provider is BT so I hope they're not too exhausted! My first instinct in these cases is to investigate whether I have trouble with any of my other regular websites - and I don't. Grrr! |

From: Steve Shaw Date: 30 Jan 11 - 09:49 AM For the last two or three days, when I click on a thread (especially longer ones methinks) I get an "operation aborted" message about 50% of the times I try. I have to double-click the back button and try again, and sometimes it takes four or five goes to get into the thread. I have also found that having a Mudcat window open often prevents me from opening another (new) window - I have to close Mudcat (which always results in a "window busy" message) before I can open another window. I'm Vista and I use IE8. Cheers for any sympathy or advice! |
