A Southerner is called a Southron. We were all Yankees to the Brits, and until 1860 or so we shared the handle. Then the Federals retained it when the Secesh forces denied their connection to the Union.

During WW2 it was again anyone from the US.

In some parts of the country, it's someone from Maine, unless you're talking about baseball.

Yan Kee--note spelling--was a Chinese philosopher of the seventh or eighth century known mostly for his jokes.

"If that's the case, I'm not sure what the nickname for a Southerner is."

Bubba.

To me, it's someone who lives North of the Mason Dixon Line. That's how
I learned it. I mentioned it in the "What is a Canuck?" thread.
If that's the case, I'm not sure what the nickname for a Southerner is.
However, I see comments on youtube from people outside the U.S. who use the term "yankee" to anyone who is American. They often shorten it to "yank", and use it as an insult.

Aren't they those people who keep losing to the Red Sox?

originally from the British song and historically not very flattering. However like everything else we embraced it and became proud of it. Depending on what part of the country you live it is a term of endearment or a term of slander. Probably like it is around the world today.

"Yankee doodle keep it up, yankee doodle dandy, mind the music and the step and with the girls be handy"

There were even little pottery figures that were sold by one of the great English pottery companies that showed half people half monkey that were very popular called "the dandies"

I am proud of the term myself, although I freely admit I was never much for the New York Yankee's baseball team. I am a Pirates fan myself.

Depends where you are. If you are in Europe, a Yankee is someone from America. If you are in America it is someone from north of the Mason Dixon line. If you are north of the Mason Dixon, a Yankee is someone from New England. If you are in New England it is someone from Vermont and if you are in Vermont a Yankee is someone who eats pie for breakfast.
Class dismissed.
