The original Kirk was James Talmadge Kirk. In a short time they realized that just wasn't a glorious enough middle name for a man like Jim, so they changed it to "Tiberius". And Tiberius it is! What a guy, eh? It's good to know that Jim will return in the 23rd Century to once again leap into the breach and provide inspiration and leadership for a suffering humanity.

Jame is the singular. James is the plural. That's not how it is nowadays, but it will be true long before Captain Kirk's birth in 2233. Over the next 200 years, there will be a gradual dropping of final "s" sounds to eliminate any confusion over number distinctions. "Cheese" will become "chee", "nose" will become "no", and "James" will become "Jame".

'Where No Man Has Gone Before' was filmed as the second pilot, though transmitted as Episode 3, so the R on Kirk's gravestone predates Talmadge.
