Barrie asked me to start a new thread on this project as the previous one is getting a bit long. To recap, we are creating a 5-CD set titled "This Is Us" plus an additional CD of seasonal music called "Until the Dark Time Ends". All the music (about 120+ songs and tunes in all) was recorded and donated by Catters.

The project is proceeding well, although I must urge the coordinating mudelves to push for completion of their information-gathering. We don't want to miss the deadline for the Getaway!

My next post to this thread will contain a link to a poster I've created which will give you a first look at the CD covers.

The important thing is, does it convey the intended message? "This Is Us" does the job. Sometimes the grammatically correct sounds worse. "This Is We?" "We Are This?" Ecch. I like "This Is Who We Are" but "This Is Us" is just fine with me.

Anyone who doesn't like "THIS IS US" can take a felt pen and change the "U" to a "B" and then put a red circle/bar sinister over that word, thereby changing the name to "THIS IS NOT BS." That may make grammarians happy... surely "IT IS WE" would make nobody happy!

With permission from bradfordian and Michael, I would suggest it is not too early to print out and send, or email a copy, of the poster to one's local npr/indie radio stations with a short blurb about oneself and one's contribution to give it a local touch. The more press the better and it doesn't cost a cent, save for a stamp, to do so.

Would it be possible to make the CDs available as paid downloads via iTunes, at a cost slightly lower than the physical CDs?    At least that might save the shipping costs?
The CD covers and the PDF files could be included as digital booklets.

I'm looking at making the s&h costs inclusive in the CD price -- which I believe is the case with the Blue Plate Specials(BPS).

There will be a discount for buying the set at one go.

With regard to Genie's comment, one of the reasons I progressed this project now, was that (bearing in mind the 9 year gap between this set and the BPS) I thought this is probably going to be the last opportunity to do CDs before they go out of fashion. To me there is a certain je ne sais quoi about having tangible media.

Bradfordian, I agree that there's no real substitute for a physical CD (or vinyl album, for that matter).    But there's also an important place for music that's stored in much more compact ways, e.g., on a hard drive or online or on a flash drive or iPod.   As small as CDs are, they still take up space, and it's much easier to take several hundred (orseveral thousand) songs with you on your iPod when you travel than it is to take a comparable number in any "hard copy" form.
I would never suggest not having the CDs & "jewel cases" - and I hope CDs never really go away, just as vinyl hasn't - but I still like the option of buying these "albums" as digital downloads too.

Here is the PROPOSED prices for the Mudcat CDs.
I will take your comments before confirming the prices.

I want to keep prices rounded rather than matching exchange rates.
That helps to keep it simple, as does IMO including shipping costs.

The prices reflect that the project has NOT been done in a professional studio, that all tracks have been donated, that there may be a little variability in quality (because I wanted to be inclusive).

I'm also bearing in mind the economic climate AND the fact that Mudcat is doing fair from those adverts which you are all clicking away at!

I would prefer to sell bundles but have been advised that single CDs should be available at the same time as the bundles (I was going to hold back for a few months, but have relented on that)

5 Mudcat CDs PLUS the seasonal CD $60, £35, 45Euros TO INCLUDE shipping,
Any 1 CD $15, £9, 12Euros TO INCLUDE shipping.

Please let me have your feedback here or by PM/e-mail (see the poster for my addy) Then I will either confirm or modify those prices.

Leadfingers, I can't speak definitively, but I know there has been some juggling going on in order to fit as many songs as possible on each CD, so it may be too early for Barrie or Michael to post the tracklists yet. I know of a few songs that have 'migrated' from one of the CDs to another.
My guess is that the tracklists will be made public as soon as the CDs are 'in the can', so to speak. But I'm not the horse's mouth in this case. (I hope I'm not some other part of the horse, either.)

Sandra, I did propose $15 for a single CD with shipping.
People ordering sets PLUS extras will get a discount on the extras when included in a single order.
I'm hoping that a fair bundle price will encourage people to go for that option. Dick has been consulted. There's no need to be greedy, Mudcat will do extremly handsomely even after production and shipping costs. Obviously, the lower we can keep the price, the more people will buy (whole sets hopefully.

Those are absolutely fair prices, imo, esp. generous in including postage and handling. What about a discount if we buy multiples (at least 6) of the same one? I am thinking Christmas presents for family and friends. I, too, hope there will be no jewel cases.

When Amos put together the first set of Mudcat CDs (the Blueplate Specials), I bought one complete set and or or 5 more of the one I had a song on. IIRC, Dick let me purchase all 9 or 10 of them for $12 apiece.
That makes sense to me, since it does encourage buying in bulk, or "multiple copies," no matter which assemblage of CDs you select.

Well, we (the team) are still beavering away with this project. We are coming towards the end of the preparation stage which includes checking lyrics, collecting "liner" notes, preparing the artwork, and much, much more (little did I realise just how much more!). After this stage, we will create the masters and get them replicated.

Over the next few days, I hope to contact all the contributors by email and/or PM to give us a final verification on lyrics and "liner" notes so that we can finalise and burn the pdfs onto the CDs BY THE END OF JULY; So:-

ALL MUDCAT CD (& SEASONAL CD) CONTRIBUTORS, PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAILS AND PMs OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS

PS. The rest you, keep putting a bit of money to one side for these CDs. We have some brilliant gems on the CDs, and I'm pretty sure we have something for everyone (well 99%)

U.K. launch on Nov 14th (Monday) at HERGA F.C. [Kitty, can you fix up some stabling for 2BS&S, just in case???]. I will be there..

U.S. launch at FSGW Getaway.(I'm gonna be there too.)

That's plan A......!

Cannot see any good reason why we couldn't be there, Ron will be working and his diary is full for a couple of years but unless he is jetting off to foreign climbs can't see why not. I will get back when I have talked it over with t'others, both out of country at the moment!

The majority of contributors to these CDs should have emails with instructions to verify their song/tune/notes etc.

You all can now view the 2011 Mudcat CDs lyrics thread, BUT IF YOU ARE NOT A CONTRIBUTOR, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM POSTING TO THAT THREAD as it is for editing purposes. Thank you for your co-operation.

Just to remind you guys, I'm only the oil (superior grade oil tho!) that lubricates the cogs. michaelr is the kingpin! (but the whole thing would not work without any of the cogs!!!)

Any chance that the "launch" at Getaway could be accompanied by stocks of actual CDs to sell there, to eliminate "shipping and handling" charges or at least abate some of them?

I hope to burn the CDs next weekend (31st July)
and get them shipped for reproduction.

Just a few days left for any adjustments to the lyrics/notes on the other thread.

We are 99.5% there with the songs, lyrics and artwork, and rearing to go.

Well done to all the contributors for submitting and double checking lyrics and notes.
