Quite simple g, every contract should have an escape clause. The ties that bind, can also be untied.

Well, if you posted it to a public forum it's in the record. You posted it. You can never take back what you said... on an internut forum or in a letter to the editor of a newspaper or in real life.

I guess I just don't understand what the problem is.

Yup. That's the answer. Ask Joe. I'm glad to cancel memberships if that's what people want to do. And no, cancellation of your membership does not remove all of your posts. It just closes off your membership so people can't send you personal messages. If you decide to come back, contact me so I can reopen your old membership.

"Membership" is probably a misnomer, because you don't really "join" anything. You register and tell us who you are, and we give you a cookie that verifies your identity and allows you access to certain features, particularly personal messages and verified identity for posting. Deleting your membership means that you no longer have access to those features. You can post as a Guest, but we require that you continue to post under the same name you used when registered. So, about all that deleting your membership does, is close off your personal messages box.

Deleting your posts would be problematic, because it would tend to make nonsense out of the posts that responded to yours. Of course, if specific posts or a user name contain personal information or might otherwise be harmful to you, we can make arrangements to deal with that.

Owning Content - it's a group discussion board not a networking site. On a networking site you remove your page and your content goes with it, but if you remove yourself from a group discussion board your discussions remain.

'Everyone' is not the same, and not everyone follows the same rules and understands the rules in the same way. It has always been the basic policy, as I understood it, to try to apply the rules equitably and fairly.....which obviously involves some judgment calls and 'interpretation'.

One person's notion of an 'insult' 'favoritism' or 'over the line remark' is another's idea of a joke. Joe has always said the he and other mods try to edit as little as possible....and Max has always said that he favors 'almost' no censorship. It ain't easy sometimes.

Like "herding 'cats" comes to mind.

(((Megan))), I've been thru the membership blues. (Several rounds!) Best approach is just take a break from the Cat-- maybe even a long one-- and consider renaming your membership at some point. And while on break, reflect from your own viewpoint about how to manage your new posts to aim for the results you'd prefer to get from them. In light of your values and what you expect from yourself accordingly. And let the rest go.

All the above is much harder than it sounds, and if you want to correspond my PM box is open. (It can be in email if you don't even want to see Cat-stuff for a bit.)

(I say this in deliberately generic terms, with absolutely no idea what has happened-- I have no dog in the fight.)

Well, if you mean to come back, better to do it as a member - I reinstate memberships very quickly if people ask, and I have an easy-to-remember e-mail address. That way, people can be more assured that you are who you say you are. We've had a lot of impersonation lately, and it's come to the point where all Guest posts are suspect.

The idea that there is some contract here is ridiculous on its face.
This place, indeed most of the internet is the 21st century version of the commons, when it comes to the discussion board aspect. The pre-internet analogy would be the demanding of the removal of all the things you said in the town square from everyone's memory. Bonnie Shaljean said it well. You don't own what you say here (excepting copyrighted material, properly notated) once you post it. It is "in the air".

As to Megan considering leaving, I am not sure what her motivation is but it is hers. The place would be lessened by her leaving though. I wish her well, and further wish she would stay.
