Subject: abc converter to whistle tab
From: GUEST,Jon
Date: 25 Jul 11 - 05:35 PM

I thought I'd read a thread here the other day about midi to whistle tab but I can't find it now.

Anyway, dreaming or otherwise, I decided I'd add the abc to tab that abcm2ps offers to the abc converter at folkinfo.

There is one oddity with it that I don't understand. With the whistle tab selected, the pdfs are coming out in landscape instead of portrait but as pdf software should be able to handle this, I'm not going to worry about that for now.

---
As for the midi to part of the question in the other thread. It (uploading and processing a binary file) is not something I fancy the converter doing.

Jon,

brilliant, absolutley brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't looking for this but we run a beginners/improvers sesssion:

Songs and Tunes at The Beech

I suspect many of our whistle players can read the dots but this opens up another route for people who cannot.

We will toast you tomorrow Jon as we Flash Mob Beech Road, Chorlton, Manchester, M21 9EG

Thanks Jon, I guess converters for banjo / mandolin exist?

I don't know of one and a quick scan through the abc software page only turns up TablEdit, a Windows GUI program which I think has its own format but imports abc.

If anyone does know of or find a command line program that can run on Linux that can do abc to banjo/mandolin/fiddle tab, I'll look in to adding it to our converter.

Looking a little further at this one. IF I can get my head round post script, I think there is a small chance that I might be able to adapt the abcm2ps flute.fmt to do a simple open position GDAE type tab. That contains the drawing instructions.

OK, I've asked on abcusers. I'm trying jaabc2ps. It is a bit dated, apparently is has a few bugs, I can't see at the moment why it prints CHR to the left of the tabs, etc. but:

For you sort of purpose of tab for session tunes, I think it will probably do the job. It's on the converter now and I'll see how it works out and put off trying to see if I can adapt abcm2ps for now.

Please note, there may be typesetting differences in the score itself when using this tab output and the other output as it is running through a different conversion program.

Just noting in the mandolin tab drift. I've had a go at the Postscript now and am using that with abcm2ps instead of running jaabc2ps.

I think abcm2ps version looks a fair bit better than the output we had before

It looks like you're heading the way I want to go with tabbing ABC dots . As a computer dumbo, I need big help, how do I do it for mando and dulcimer?

Graham

jaabc2ps could be used for mandolin and mountain dulcimer. There are a few details for this at http://www.guitarnut.com/abc/jaabc2ps.html#stringtab. The program is a bit out of date though.

Also for mountain dulcimer, I remember there being a python abc progam for this. I don't know if it still is developed but when I looked at it, there were a number of problems with it.

Part 2. (sorry about this but the Mudcat system will not allow a Guest to post more than 2 links in a post.

It may be worth looking at the abc notation software listing but I couldn't find anything else (except a possibility of importing into TablEdit if you can run windows programs) when I asked about mandolin tab in July.

The other alternative is to use a format file with abcm2ps

Part 3

I can let you have a copy of the mandolin one I hacked together for the folkinfo (there is a link in the first post- didn't need to do a pt3 after all...) if you want one.

Additionally, I'm willing to have a look at a very basic mountain dulcimer tab to work with abcm2ps if I'm given some info on tuning(s) and fingering.

Jon, thats a really kind offer. I use my dulci axe in the standard D.A.d tuning. The 1st D is below middle C and the other - above. I cross pick chords to bring out the melody with a hand stretch of 4 frets, which is about the norm. For any more info, just ask and you will be given as they say. I have been in touch with ABCexplorer and Gerard there says he'll be happy to include any free format abc2ps that does the job. Hope this helps. Graham.

OK here is the mandolin format. Just reach 7th fret and move to next string. I don't understand my have to get to the higher frets on the first string but it works for me.

It will either need:

%%tablature #1 pitch=G, 28 0 63 m_head m_note

added to the abc or

tablature #1 pitch=G, 28 0 63 m_head m_note

added to the format file.

A pitch=C instead of G, would work for std/jazz tuned tenor banjo or tenor mandola, etc.

---
I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do the MD tab as the postscript in the format file only sees the first note in a chord but if you can point me to a couple of examples to look at although it seems unlikley at the moment, I might be able to think of something.

There is another way that tab can be produced via abcm2ps which may be able to do more but it's beyond anything I want to do and I think is for laying out tab manually rather than generating a simple tab. You would need to read through the file fmt.txt that comes with abcm3ps for this.

Thanks for that Jon, I'm just trying to get my head round it and my significant other says 'it's midnight' here in England. I'll have another go tomorrow. Cheers, G.

Sleeping on the dulci tab idea, it dawned on me that all it needs to do is tab out the melody dots (as with your smart Kesh example), because ones spare fingers will naturally fall on the other strings thus forming the accomp chords when needed. The chord changes can be left -as is- in the abc code in quotes, if that makes sense.

I guess that the only other point is, if one is playing a 1st string melody note up at say 10th fret, any following lower note would probably need to be on one of the other strings within 4 frets away for comfort rather than opting for an open string. There, dead simple, maybe! Cheers Graham.

ps: I'll try and find someone to walk me through the button pushing to load in your mando file (me king pc moron!).

I'm not sure but I think that might be possible. When I was playing with a double ocarina tab, I found there was one note that could be played on either chamber and opted to keep with the range already in use (see the c note here) so I know that saving notes played is possible. Anything involving reading ahead is out though.

Perhaps you could (pen and paper and a scan would do) do me the kesh jig in the tab format that you are thinking of. Might be easier to email it to me. jon at folkinfo.org.

Oh and here is one way from the command line. Add the following lines to the format file and save as mandolin.fmt.

tablature #1 pitch=G, 28 0 63 m_head m_note
tablature #2 pitch=C 28 0 63 m_head m_note

command for mandolin:
abcm2ps -F mandolin.fmt -T1 [rest of command line]

for tenor mandola:
abcm2ps -F mandolin.fmt -T2 [rest of command line]

Alternatively (at least with development versionsofabcm2ps 6.5.0 or later) you can place your own tablature # line in the abc as %%tablature #1 and always call the command line with -T1.

(The folkinfo converter uses this second method mainly because there is a limit of 8 tablature # lines per format files. In most cases I want to offer a large range of pitches and some format files contain more than one set of postcript functions). I'd have a lot of duplicated postscript and format files if it used the first method I've given)

Might be useful for Have-a-Go. Someone picked up one of my fliers and said they were interested but didn't read music. Thanks.

Is there any significance in the holes being different shapes?

When I copy some abc into the programme and get a picture of a whistle, some holes are round, some square, some pointy.

How odd, I've just tried it again and before when I put in abc and then clicked log file it gave abc with tab underneath, with varying shaped holes. Now it's just abc.

OK, I'm not seeing that but I don't think it matters and I think this will down to some combination of your browser /display and I'm guessing a png graphic.

Try a pdf and see if that looks OK. Also, if you are using the png setting at the moment, try the svg setting instead and see that works for you. It is a better quality graphic but not all browsers support it.

Yes, (how did you guess?).
I tried it before on png and got the odd pictures, just wondered if there was some meaning known only to a whistle player.
The pdf looked OK both times.
