Subject: Keith Marsden Memorial Concert - 10 Sep From: MoorleyMan Date: 01 Sep 11 - 10:57 AM Just a factual heads-up: There's a special Keith Marsden Memorial Concert taking place on Saturday 10th September 2011 at 8 pm at Morley Working Men's Club (that's Morley in West Yorkshire, UK, just south of Leeds), at which all but two of the songs of the iconic Yorkshire songwriter Keith Marsden will be performed, together with a number of other items in tribute. Singers appearing include Graham Pirt, John Conolly, David Kidman, Alma Wright and Carol Southwell. The concert has been organised by Keith Brown of Morley Folk Club, full details at www.morleyfolk.org .. Tickets are £6, and, fittingly, all proceeds go to British Heart Foundation. Keith died on 10th August 1991, and even now his talent is undersung... yet there is no question that he penned some of the very finest and most perceptive of contemporary folk songs - many of which have already passed into tradition. This concert will be a unique chance to appreciate the breadth and quality of Keith's songwriting, and to hear all these fine songs in one generously-filled programme. Hoping to raise the rafters - and plenty of cash for the BHF !

Subject: RE: BS: Keith Marsden Tribute Concert -UK From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Sep 11 - 03:05 PM Can I ask a Mudelf to move this above the line please? Can't make it myself (I am committed to a talk like a pirate party for some strange reason...) but it should be a good do. Is it acts performing Keith's songs or is it songs about Keith or inspired by his work or a bit of everything? Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: Keith Marsden Tribute Concert-Morley UK, 10 Sept From: MoorleyMan Date: 09 Sep 11 - 06:01 AM In response to 12barblues' post above: For the record, the songs that are not being performed at the concert are:- Crack Your Whip (Keith's very early foray into songwriting), Tortoises Always Come Last (Keith's very last song, for which he never actually got round to writing a tune - the Cockersdale recording uses the tune supplied by Chris Sugden some years later), and The Vampire (not strictly a Keith Marsden song as such, but his musical setting of words by Kipling). And yes, before you ask, that makes three items not two! The reason for their non-inclusion in the concert is in the end primarily one of time constraint. However, at the time the organiser was arranging and co-ordinating the performers, there were none amongst the known available pool of artists who had any of those three songs within their specific repertoire/s (whereas, as you can imagine, half an evening could have been filled from multiple renditions of Bring Us A Barrel alone!). Although (as is often the way with events arranged on short lead-times) potential candidates have since been located, the tightly coordinated event and venue availability do not at this late stage allow for a further 15-minute extension to what is already a very full advertised programme. Only one day to go now... See you there. |
Subject: RE: Keith Marsden Tribute Concert-Morley UK, 10 Sept From: nutty Date: 09 Sep 11 - 08:03 AM Correction Morleyman The words to the Vampire song were by Charles Kingsley not Kipling although I was always given to understand that Keith wrote the middle verse. |
Subject: RE: Keith Marsden Tribute Concert-Morley UK, 10 Sept From: nutty Date: 09 Sep 11 - 08:05 AM Correction again --- disregard everything I wrote above - wrong song - my brain is not working this morning APOLOGIES |
Subject: RE: Keith Marsden Tribute Concert-Morley UK, 10 Sept From: MoorleyMan Date: 09 Sep 11 - 08:17 AM Yes Hazel, you were thinking of When All The World - easily done... but Keith's settings of both are wonderful of course! |
Subject: RE: Keith Marsden Tribute Concert-Morley UK, 10 Sept From: MoorleyMan Date: 10 Sep 11 - 04:20 AM It's tonight! Hoping for a good turnout to pay tribute to one of the county's finest and raise plenty of money for the BHF. Tickets WILL be available on th' door. But don't be late - it starts at 8 pm prompt.. |
Subject: RE: Keith Marsden Tribute Concert-Morley UK, 10 Sept From: MoorleyMan Date: 13 Sep 11 - 09:05 AM Really puzzled to find no posts on this thread since the concert - so I thought I'd better let folks know that £230 in total was raised for the British Heart Foundation. It was a grand night indeed... But whatever happened to the folk community in Yorkshire, representatives of which were almost entirely conspicuous by their absence on the night? Surely they weren't all on holiday that weekend? Or attending the Swarbrick/Carthy gig in Leeds? Or preferring to support one of the few folk clubs that meet on the second Saturday in the month? Clashes of loyalty are inevitable, but considering the high regard in which the legacy of Keith M is held on the folk scene, his memory really deserved a better turnout from local folkies on this occasion, especially considering the special one-off nature of the event and its very reasonable admission price. |
