EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A Washington state man is being investigated for first-degree assault after allegedly attacking a guitarist for singing a song he didn't like, officials say.

The 33-year-old Mount Vernon, Wash., man, whose name was not released, has "a potential mental health issue," prosecutors said. He was being held on $25,000 bail, The (Everett, Wash.) Daily Herald reported Monday.

The suspect jumped on stage with a knife while a band performed Friday during the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival. The guitarist, who suffered minor cuts to his neck, used his guitar to fend off the attack.

The man later told police he didn't approve that the band was singing what he thought was a song about a baby or a girl.

Andrew Alsdorf, a deputy prosecutor, argued for a $50,000 bail, given the suspect's mental state.

"There is a potential mental health issue going on, but the overwhelming concern is for the safety of the community," Alsdorf said in court.

No mention of what the song was.

I'd like to hear what the song was. Times like that, though, I bet people wish they had a National Steel... or a banjo.

We need dojos springing up across the country to instruct musicians in the self-defense of Guild fu and Taylor kwan do. Just imagine the katas...

Long ago, a guy braced me up because he'd heard that I included the 'D-Day Dodgers' in my repertoire, and his father had been in the 8th Army. I explained who had written it, and sang it in my next spot.
He approved. Fortunately.

They never were safe! There's a guy around here who collects old Martin and Gibson guitars. He has one from the 1950s...it shows signs of having been played hard over many long years, including a large caliber bullet hole that goes right through the front and back of the body, probably lined up about at heart level, assuming the man playing it was standing at the time....I don't imagine he was afterward.

Must've been a jealous husband or something. These things happen now and then.

Jeez...Down there, in the south, some places have cages for the band, to protect them from 'unidentified hurled objects'...(keeps Bobert safe..)
Smirk..

I live quite close to this Public Park in Mukilteo. I was down there yesterday morning looking at the scene. The real clue to this event is that the singer was a "ROCK" musician. Need I say more! bob(deckman)nelson

Word on the street is the band was playing Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey"... I've already made my contribution to the attacker's defense fund...

This sort of thing must be stopped NOW or they'll be attacking trumpeters next, and THAT would lead to the total and complete breakdown of civilization as we know it.

For as long as the link last: From The Seattle Times:

Singer fends off armed attacker with his guitar

A knife-wielding man who took offense to the song "Better Luck Next Time" and attacked the lead singer and guitarist of the Seattle band Flowmotion was charged with first-degree assault on Tuesday.

and

According to a Mukilteo Police Department report, Sampson told arresting officers that he ought to be charged with murder because he intended to kill the singer-guitarist. "[He] was singing about me and how I should die," Sampson told police, according to the report.

"Better Luck Next Time," a song about regret and redemption, begins with the lyrics:
You sent your letter off to the judge
Asking for one more chance of her sweet, sweet love.
Trying to escape the mistakes of a life on the greener side of grass.
And you'd give up anything to get it back.

The band was playing in the beer garden at the festival shortly after 6 p.m. when Sampson strode past attendants and leapt onto the stage, police said. Sampson, of Mount Vernon, told police he ran down a hill of blackberry bushes and climbed over a barbed-wire fence to get into the festival, police said.

Clausen, 33, attempted to fend off the attacker with his guitar and suffered only minor injuries, according to police.

"Thankfully, I was leaning back and he missed," Clausen wrote on the band's Facebook page. "I tried to take him with my guitar and he ran."

The drummer, Scott Goodwin, told officers the attacker had been "armed with a yellow knife and a vicious look in his eyes."

Personally, I think this is decent song challenge material.

Wow. He REALLY didn't like the song! He climbed bobwar, as we call it down here, to get into the festival to attack the singer, man, must have hit some nerve...

How much damage to the heroic guitar?

I'd guess the guitar was a solid body electric. Ya gotta be nuts in the first place to attack one of them with a knife. on the other hand, a Bic lighter . . .

That's nothing. Charlie Patton once politely refused a drink bought for him by a patron in a juke joint and the man dragged out a knife and slashed Patton's neck barely missing his jugular. He was shot in the in the leg in another juke joint. Son House went to Parchman Farm for killing a man in a juke joint. the guy was drunk and opened fire and hit House in the leg so he drew his own weapon and killed him. Fortunately, he was set free after only a couple of years. Robert Johnson appears to have been poisoned by the husband of a woman he was seen talking to at a suppa. So when have guitarists ever been safe?

Sounds like a typical Saturday night in the juke joint... lol...

The late Sam Carr (drummer for everyone you've ever heard of) was telling me about "workin' the doo" of juke joints back when... Scarey places to be...

No Longer Safe!!!

npr brought up the possibility that Gibson guitars that you have could be confiscated since there is no limitation to the after sale guitars that have the "illegal" rosewood from Madagascar.

Please, where is there more discussion involving this controversy??
