Subject: Bare Bones - reissued?
From: Phil Edwards

A couple of weeks ago I managed to find an online supplier who had copies of Bare Bones, the last CD Tony Rose released. I put my money down like a shot, and I'm glad I did - it's a superb album, with some truly definitive song readings. Well worth the money, if you see it advertised.

However, a couple of things have made me wonder whether this is the original CD - and if not, where it's from. Despite carrying the Philips CD logo, the CD wouldn't play in any of the machines in the house; the only things that will play it are the computer and the car CD player. I've burned a CD-R copy on the computer; some of our CD players will play that, but not the original. This seems odd, to say the least. The other odd thing is the noise on a couple of tracks - there's a huffing, clicking noise during, roughly, the last minute of track 5 (Following the Old Oss) and the first minute of track 6 (The Lakes of Shilin). It's for all the world as if the CD's been recorded from an LP, with scratches.

Anyone else know any more about this?

I'm aware of all that. Just wondering if anyone else had noticed odd noises on a copy of the CD, or knew if it was being re-pressed.

I got my copy of Bare Bones a few years old and it plays fine on my Pioneer SACD player, without any clicks in tracks 5 or 6.

Pip - I didn't put the web page up for you (who knows the recording) - I put it up for those who may know nothing about the recording.

Pip, perhaps I've misunderstood, but "Despite carrying the Philips CD logo ..." This was issued by Tony himself (I think) under the Boneshaker banner, so if it carries the Philips CD logo doesn't that mean it's not 'the real thing'? The address for Boneshaker Records on my CD - they'd know but I don't know if the address is still current - is 13 Lower Odcombe, Yeovil, BA22 8TX. Hope this helps.

My copy is on Boneshaker (BSCD2001) as well and plays perfectly. Sounds like you have a knock off there Pip, very curious indeed. Someone must be behind these as I can't imagine that anyone at Philips would see a fortune to be made on repressing obscure Tony Rose cds. Last time I checked Exe was slowly disappearing as well, though one or two of his Leader recordings are still available on cd from "those" people...

Philips developed the CD technology. Their logo with the "Compact Disc Digital Audio" text on a CD states that it has been produced according to the CD specification. It doen't have anything to do with the issuer of the CD which in this case is Boneshaker Records.

What Reinhard said - by the Philips logo I meant the "CD Digital Audio" logo which is supposed to prove that you've got a genuine CD.

I'm pretty sure Boneshaker Records was Tony Rose himself - I don't know who would answer a letter to that address now.

Bare Bones was Tony himself - he had to have some product as all his earlier work was tied up by CM.- altohugh I did notice them put out Under the Greenwood Tree on CD when Tony took to the road again! I would have thought Bare Bones was all gone by now - is someone doing a repro rip-off? - yes, try Tony's family in Yeovil. Laura has been known to guest on the Cat - perhaps she pick this up.

I have to say that, even if it is a dodgy copy, I'm very glad of the opportunity to hear the music. But I am a bit puzzled.

Hi Pip.
The way I understand it, is that Tony was so frustrated by the unwillingness of Celtic Music to negotiate over the back catalogue of his Leader recordings, That Tony just re-recorded his favourites! Subsequently, after his death, His family released "Exe" A collection of out-takes and Live recordings, released a couple of years ago.
I don't know if "Barebones" is still in print, but "Exe" certainly is, and any Tony Rose fans should get a copy immediately.

Maybe I can throw some light on this. We (Roots Records) originally had stock of Bare Bones (on Tony's own Boneshaker label) via Pete Coe when fundraising activities were going on before Tony's sad passing.
We eventually sold out and I had been looking to see if there was still stock around. I found that Helen English still had some, so ordered some. These are still the Boneshaker CDs, and we advertised them on our own website Bare Bones and on our Amazon shop.
Did the OP get their copy from us? Or was it from elsewhere? Either way, if you have a faulty copy, you should refer back to your supplier. I am not aware of there being any problem with them, so you may have a rogue copy,

Hope this helps.
Graham

Hi Graham,

Yes, I got it from Roots Records. I was pleasantly surprised to see it back in stock; I thought the last ones had gone.

As for what the noise sounds like, I've pulled out a five-second sample here:
Excerpt on my Bandcamp site

(Where this file is concerned, I'm only using the Bandcamp space for temporary storage; I'll delete it in a couple of days.)

I think there may be something a bit iffy about these CDs, technically speaking. As I say, I'm still glad to hear the music! Tony's singing continues to influence the way I approach traditional songs (example).

Pip, that sounds like a CD skipping rather than the sort of clicks you get on CD reissues badly dubbed from vinyl (which kind of makes sense if it was never released on vinyl in the first place...). I'd guess you were unlucky and got a dud copy. Meanwhile I think I might have to take my poor, abused credit card on a trip to the Roots Records website...

You can prove anything with facts.
