Gypsy Moth was built by Tyrells of Arklow. Her keel was cast In the Tonge and Taggart iron foundry in Dublin.

Its a great song which I can relate to having sailed tall ships for a number of years - including in a couple of force 8 gales (in the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay). It is also great to have the composer Ken Campbell make the final adjustments - thank you.

The only recording out there is a rather muffled 'My Kind Of Folk' from 12-03-1969. Here:

l. well done.There are very few amendments. you have resurrecteded one of the o!d Pennine songs which I don't think we ever recorded! What a pity! there are very few changes!

or example....Last !ine of chorus for word rolling or raging I think I wrote lonely sky. In verse 2 delete letter A so that it reads... round. In verse 3 the first and second linez should
s now read The steerings smash and the progress slow the RTbatteries running !ow. And of course famous words...Youll nevermake it Fra nk they said. Verse Six. Substiute the word From instead of....for.and in line three substitute Is home for comes home....and many many for your dogged persistence to trace tne song and to get it Right.

Thank you - that's the line!! Only been after this for 50 years!! One final search is for 'Sally Free and Easy' (by Cyril Tawney) as performed by The Pennine Folk - I have The Pennine Folk's LP 'Both Sides Now' but that track is unplayable by deep gouging!!!

The Wikipedia article on the Gipsy Moth IV is quite interesting. The ship was built in 1962, named after the de Havilland Gipsy Moth aircraft that navigation pioneer Sir Francis Chichester (1901-1972) flew from England to Australia in the early 1930s. Chichester made his round-the-world solo sailing voyage in the Gipsy Moth IV in 274 days in 1966-67.
Note that the spelling of the ship's name is Gipsy Moth IV. Hoyt Axton wrote a song titled Gypsy Moth, about the insect....or was it? I can't really tell if the song was about the insect, the plane, the boat, or about President "Ramblin' Jack"...Kennedy.

I'm not a fan of SFC, however the song...:

1. is by the Pennine Folk - no other reason needed, however` ...
2. reminds of happy times in the folk clubs of Loughborough, Bolton and Manchester in the 1960s
3. its a rollicking good song of the sea
4. as a tall ship sailor I want to sail around Cape Horn too
5. Gypsy Moth is now used for sail training youngsters (or was)

In the 1960s the Pennine Folk sang this on a radio programme from Manchester. The chorus is:

For years I have searched high and low for this song, but to no avail.

On another tack - does the Pennine Folk still perform. I saw one of their lps on eBay and it was over £50.
