Subject: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 21 Nov 11 - 07:31 PM Apparently there is a campaign to buy the Queen a new royal yacht. She could sell the Van Dycks to the National Gallery, then we could all see them when we wanted. That would buy her a new yacht, and we would all get something out of it. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: BTNG Date: 21 Nov 11 - 09:45 PM Education isn't a common thing among certain families, I mean they go to school and all, but they have this genetic incapability to actually learn. It's very common among the inbred and those who support and vote Conservative. Al, maybe sell of some of her real estate holdings that should bring in a few quid! (thinks: "I wonder Balmoral and the surrounding land is worth?") :-D |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,mark-s(on the road) Date: 21 Nov 11 - 10:04 PM Can I get a ticket good for a cruse? Or did it get lost in the mail with my invitation to the royal wedding? |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Nov 11 - 03:21 AM Royal yachts are a fascinating anachronism, perhaps, but anachronisms can be fun. Apparently, The Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997 and is open to tourists in Edinburgh. Admission is £11.00, £9.50 for us old folks over 60. I didn't find a cruise schedule - too bad. Wikipedia has a List of Royal Yachts of the United Kingdom. and a fascinating article on Royal yachts in general. The Daily Mail has an interesting article on the Britannia. We tourists find all this monarchy stuff very entertaining. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: BTNG Date: 22 Nov 11 - 11:00 AM sorry you really do need to read your history, before making idiotic statements like that the lend lease loan was repaid: Payment was to be stretched out over 50 annual payments, starting in 1951 and with five years of deferred payments, at 2% interest.[27] The final payment of $83.3 million (£42.5 million), due on 31 December 2006 (repayment having been deferred in the allowed five years), was made on 29 December 2006 (the last working day of the year). After this final payment Britain's Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Ed Balls, formally thanked the U.S. for its wartime support. As to World War I, the US stayed out of it till 1917. The American presence made little or no difference to the final outcome. It should also be noted that the US were not the only country loan the UK money for reconstruction, Canada also did, and they were repaid as well, so...the UK owes you nothing. by the by Bennett, who's "we"? |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: Jack the Sailor Date: 22 Nov 11 - 12:35 PM It seems to me that the "prestige" of traveling on the Royal Yacht, and the amount of time the Royals actually spend on it could pay for at least the use of a cruise ship. People pay thousands of dollars to ride on a boat with the likes of "The Barenaked Ladies" and "Glen Beck" How much more would they spend to sail with royalty? |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: BTNG Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:12 PM Indeed who would fork over the estimated £80m for the cost of a replacement royal "yacht"? source of that figure, by the way was that esteemed rag the Daily Stale (err..Mail) 'ave you ever seen the like before? |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:28 PM According to the Daily Mail (who initiated the campaign to build a new Royal Yacht on 12th November this year, and designed a blueprint of it) the 80 million pounds would be funded by 'donations from individuals and corporations'. It would, they say, earn its keep by being chartered by various organisations. If these 'individuals and corporations' have 80 million pounds to spend, would it not be better to use the money to generate employment for the young? Or any other charitable/beneficial enterprise? And why let the Queen use it? What does she propose to contribute financially? (Nothing, I bet!) |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: Jack the Sailor Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:29 PM £80m, That is peanuts! You could Breaking news on Anderson Cooper everywhere....Prince Harry, just arrived in New York aboard the Royal Yacht Royal Bank of Scotland. He will be speaking at the UN and doing some shopping. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: BTNG Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:33 PM well go ahead, Jack, contribute. It seems Eliza and myself won't be getting an invite anytime soon, for being unpatriotic and NOT contributing |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:38 PM Well, 80 million pounds would probably fund a few daycare centres for old and disabled folk. Or some schemes for helping youngsters to obtain qualifications for jobs. Or affordable first-homes for young couples. etc etc. Anything is better than a great big boat for HM to swan around in! |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: Jack the Sailor Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:40 PM You do not seem to realize the valuable contribution I am giving right here on this thread. I am suggesting that the Crown commercialize the whole thing. I am sure that you have heard the argument that the Royals are worth the tax dollars spent because of the tourism money generated. I am simply suggesting that it be taken one step further and run like a US sports franchise. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:43 PM By the way, I see that the on-the-night total for the Children-in-Need event was 26 million. If these wealthy boat contributors would instead donate to that very worthy cause, they might do some good. 80 million would be only too gratefully received. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:52 PM I see what you're getting at , Jack. But would Her Maj be prepared to appear in this commercial enterprise? No-one would pay to board the Royal Yacht unless the 'Royal' was present. She already makes a mint by charging an arm and a leg to visit a few State rooms of Buck Palace. But a mere boat would need some incentive to command £1000 entry tickets. Maybe the corgis...? Be photographed wearing Princess Beatrice's weird Wedding Hat? Free tupperware cereal boxes...? |
