I remember this from a Metamora cassette that came wrapped in an envelope like a packet of seeds. I think "Mountain Field" was another of the songs, and the one that names all the quilt patterns.

Thanks for the lyrics Emily! I put the changes to it tonight as I hear them. The very end is missing a few but my little potato woke up and now I have to go to sleep. Enjoy!

Little Potato: by Metamora

Hammer Dulcimer Interlude: Am, G, C, G

Chorus:
NC       C             F
You're my little potato
          C            G
You're my little potato
          C
You're my little potato,
    F       G                     C    C7Add4/F C
they dug you up You come from underground

Verse:
             Am            G                   C    G
The world is big,       So big;      It's very big.
    Am            G                      C    G
To you,    It's new;             It's new to you.

Chorus
Interlude solo!
Bridge:
                F
Let's talk about root crops (they dug you up)
    C
And lamb chops (they chew on you)
    A7       D7
And things to eat
    G7
Like apples and cheese and 'nanas and cream, and jellies and butter.
      B               E                B                E    A A7 D7 G7
It's late at night, I hope this little bottle helps you go to sleep...

               F         G
They must have grown you wild
          F         G
To make a grown man-child;
            F            G
I'll go and play in the mud
          F       G
To be with you, my spud;
             F       G
Potato, when you came out
       F       G
Looking red as a beet,
         Bb                            G7
You had wrinkles on the bottoms of your feet.

Whoa, oh oh now,

You are so sweet, potato
2nd Chorus: (same chords as Chorus)

You're my sweet potato

You're my sweet potato, dug you up

You come from underground

The world is small,
So small
It's very small

Definitely by Malcolm Dalglish. He writes some great children's songs! My toddler loves this song in particular. We have a recording of Dalglish doing Little Potato on the cd "Welcoming Children Into the World," songs from a radio program Sound and Spirit, originating on WGBH in Boston. :-)

Concordia College is across town, the river, and the state line from me. I heard the choir do this live some years ago. In the early 90's Garrison Keillor conducted a couple "Prairie Home Festivals" at Concordia that ran for a couple days and ended with the live radio broadcast on Saturday night. It may have been the first public performance of the choral arrangement.

Click here for an interesting choral recording of this song. Apparently the song was written by Malcolm Dalglish. It's on the Metamora album, which is a great recording.

Little Potato
by Metamora?

chorus: You're my little potato
You're my little potato
You're my little potato, they dug you up
You come from underground

The world is big,
So big;
It's very big.
To you
It's new;
It's new to you.

[chorus]

Let's talk about root crops (they dug you up)
And lamb chops (they chew on you)
And things to eat
Like apples and cheese and 'nanas and cream;
Jellies and butter
It's late at night, I hope this little bottle
Helps you go to sleep...

They must have grown you wild
To make a grown man-child;
I'll go and play in the mud
To be with you, my spud;
Potato, when you came out
Looking red as a beet,
You had wrinkles on the bottoms of your feet.

Whoa, oh oh now,
You are so sweet, potato

(alt. chorus)
You're my sweet potato
You're my sweet potato, dug you up
You come from underground

You smile
A smile
A little smile
The world is small,
So small
It's very small

[chorus]

You're my little potato
You're my little potato
You're my little potato...

Note: Metamora recorded this on their self-titled (first?) album, but they didn't include any credits for the songs. I assume the band wrote them themselves.
