Any seafood -- but lobster is especially good -- with stout. Curmudgeon and I discovered this while eating, I think, a birthday lobster without champagne. Guinness is good, but any decent stout works its magic. The flavors complement and enhance each other.

I've been hungry for lobster (well, I'm usually hungry for lobster!) lately, but our repast for our "other anniversary" (double anniversary of when Tom and I met at a Fishtraks Christmas party and night a year later when, while celebrating having known each other for a year, we decided to get married and started planning our wedding for the following June) tonight doesn't include any...yet.

I don't dislike lobster, I just like pretty much every other source of protein cheaper than lobster better. Cheese, fin fish, tofu, beans, red meat, white meat, gray meat (pork), mollusks, crab, shrimp.

Are those of you who do like lobsters are aware that they are bottom feeding scavengers? I have seen them in a fathom or two of water feeding on decaying fish. Have you?

Funny though, I like crab OK and they do the same think. But I have not seen them do it.

So are politicians, lawyers, salesmen and many other bottom living fish, like crab, cod, haddock, halibut. Something, or something, has to do it.

Marine mollusks like scallops, clams, mussles, oysters just filter out the smaller pieces of crap that you dont see (even sewage, if it's present) out of the water. Is it really that much different?

Lobster, while cheaper this year, is indeed expensive, especially if they are shipped far, and have a few handlers who get their share of your money offering. And, consider you only get roughly 25 percent meat out of your live purchase. At least with scallops, all you buy is edible protien.

Indeed, the rise of the price of lobster is astonishing. A bottom feeder that was once drag netted from near shore by waders to be dumped on farm fields to grow spuds and corn and whatever.

But, I love the taste.

As for farmed salmon, it's better than no salmon. And the lumber industry has made short work of the wild salmon here.

What is happening in or near rivers and coastal areas contributes.But, what leading scientists say is the main problem with Atlantic salmon is poor survival during their sea phase. Meaning, enough salmon are leaving the many rivers to repopulate the species. But, not enough return to rivers to spawn as adults.

This is not to say that some land or coastal practices, such as chemicals used to control sea lice, or agricultural or forest spraying has not limited their ability to survive log-term or to produce fit offsprings. There is surely enough and a range of chemicals used to make some difference.

Did somebody say Black Velvet? I am so there, having had my first less than a week ago! And I love lobster but rarely spend the money for it. However, once a year a nearby Unitarian church sells lobster rolls as its annual fundraiser. It's a roll, a little butter, and a lot of lobster. No mayo, celery, or anything else. I buy one for lunch and one for dinner. Once once a year Mystic Seaport has Lobster Days. I bring my own tools! I used to cook lobsters but have become lazy.

What a let down when I learned that most truffle oil is "simulated", and not made from real "dig down and dirty" French-pig-located truffles (aka underground, rich mans shrooms).

Note the fisherman in front of the lobster to get the scale of the lobster.

BTW... Shediac Bay shellfish and lobster are far more tastey than any others because of a parasite that inhabits their guts (learned that at uni from a biology prof). The fried clams are ta die for! (Especially if eaten at the wrong time of year.) Hmmm, maybe the worst farts are just from Shediac Bay lobster and beer?

Wow! Well, here in Maine we have to throw lobsters that size back as "breeders." Might even have to use a crane to throw that one back in.

We used to have a giant lobster trap as a tourist attraction here in Maine back in the 1950's. It was always jammed with tourists who would walk in and then were unable to find their way out. I think the town code enforcement officer had it shut down as a public nuisance.

LOL. Won't fall for that one, gnu. In every place where they are caught they say the same thing, that their's taste best becauise of- yada yada.

While palates differ. While I like them all, IMO, the colder the water,the better the lobsters taste and lobsters caught in the warm summer months are of a lower quality (again, IMO). BTW, lobsters cross borders, and many of those that are branded Maine lobsters are often caught in Canada.

However, I am willing to do a taste test, if the different places will supply me with free lobsters for the taste test. :)

I was reading in New Scientist something about how parasitic worms - tapeworms and suchlike - can sometimes stop you having allergies. And earthworms can be quite tasty, I've been told, if properly prepared. (Here is a recipe.) But I'll give them a miss this Christmas.

You've reminded me of the time we were ghosting in through the fog toward Stonington Harbor back in the fall of 1964 in the good ketch Stout Heart. We didn't have a clue exactly where we were but we ran across a lobster boat, and after a chat the crew invited us to join them at a lobster and beer party over at Crotch Island. Crotch Island as you probably know is the site of an abandoned granite quarry, with a large cove blasted out of its middle. The lobster were "short" and the beer was 'Ganset but it all went down mighty well. That's where I first heard a verse from the old bawdy song "Down at Merchants Island":

That day that Al poached that HUGE lobster and we sat of Cape Enrage and pigged out on it....

We were out of Alma, New Brunswick. The weather turned bad on the way back. We had two below in the bunks, not in good shape. Al and I stood on deck in 3M seas in the Persephone, 26 feet of her, for several hours on wait, stationary, to get back into harbour. I enjoyed every minute of it. We drank beer and told stories... and a few lies... >:-)

I no nothing of the sea. But, I trusted AL. He joined the RCN at age 14. Hehehehe... he wanted to get away from school... turned out, in the RCN, he had to do his shift and then had to do "school" for three hours every day. He was a gem of a man... tough as fuckin nails. Big heart... but tough as fuckin nails. I'll miss him.

Gee, that minds me of the story of the time they ditched in an A6 (I think it was an A6) just south of Bermuda. Great story.

A long ago deceased Cdn. fishery officer (conservation guy) told me a story of stake out of a group of big-league lobster poachersm in the 1950's. They had a illegal canning operation that would move from house to house, and they had good look outs, so could never catch them.

They got word that one of their sons was getting married and a big poached lobster feed was planned during the boys stag party at the poachers house. On the day of the big party, they sat in the sourrounding woods, watching and waiting for the lobsters top arrive.

The main poachers elderly father was a gent who could not handle booze. Each time he drank any significant amount, it drove him wacky, and he eventually attempted suicide (normally by rope). So, they kept a close eye on him.

Well, seems like that day the old gent sneeked a few brew on the side, without any of the party-folk noticing. Through their field glasses, the officers were surprised to see the grandfather walking directly their way. They feared they would loose their cover. He walked nearer. Not far from where they were staked out the old fellow looped a rope around the limb of a big tree. He then climbed it, wrapped the rope around his neck, and jumped. He was was dangling and turning blue. They rushed over and cut him down, and took him to the party house, where emergency help was called. The ambulence arrived and took him away.

The poachers warmly thanked them for saving the old guys life. There was no mention on either side as to why the officers happened to bet in the woods, by this house. Both sides just knew what was up in this cat and mouse game.

The rest of the story...at the time, the fishery officer told me that the old gent was later examined at the hospital, and he had no physical injury. He said that the old guy lived to a ripe old age, and it was the last time he tried to hang himself, as far as he knew.
The lobster poaching operation lasted for a few more years, they eventually moved on, and the conservation officers never established a poaching case against them, though they continued to try and catch them. He said that it was the last stake out he participated in against these folks.

Me relatives up Kent County poached everything. They would invite the warden (yes, back then there was only one warden for miles), a bachelor, for dinner often.

Then came the new DNR. Hired young fellahs. Armed them! They tried to catch Thomas and Hensley for years. Not a hope. I mean, talk about clueless... they had a tractor and there wasn't much snow one year. I mean, if yer plowin a yard and ya got a BIG snowbank??? Wouldn't ya check that out and find tha moooze? Their father built his house over a spring. Great place to keep salmon and trout fresh as a daisy... fer when the warden popped by.

They would gather a whitetail fawn in spring and keep it in with the sheep. The wardens would confiscate it and release it. It would find it's way back. I'll stop there.

One year, Hensley lost 80 hogs to hoof and mouth, had to shoot em all, burn em in a pit and bury em. Applied for assistance. Got it. And the coin he sold the hogs for. Poachers? These guys were masters. Hensely use to cut crooked would for the welfare bunch at $40 a cord... takes a lot more cords a crooked wood to heat a house than proper stovewood.

Hensley and his stills... they grew a lot of corn and spuds...the coal mine... oh, the stories.

Think I might have some more shrimp and beer.
