I've been looking for the lyrics to an Irish folk song named "The Lass of Aughrim." I've checked what seems to be all the possible websites. Do you have any ideas on how I can get the lyrics?

This song is usually known as "Lord Gregory". It's basically Scottish, with strong Irish versions, nowadays. There are several versions in the Digital Tradition database (top right of the forum page gives a search engine). Check these and come back if you need any more!

Lovely song. I first heard it in the film "The Dead" which is based on the Joyce short story in which the song is integral to the plot. Unfortunately, I don't have any recording of it. If I remember correctly, the poor lass brings her illegitimate baby to the home of his wealthy father and is turned away. The only lyrics I remember: The rain falls on my locks, the dew wets my skin. My babe lies cold within my arms, but none will let me in.

Sounds like "Lord Gregory", aka "The Lass of Loch Royale", "Fair Isabell of Rochroyal", etc. "Lord Gregory" will find you 3 versions on the Database, though the midi links seem to be broken at the moment. I've come across "Lass of Arrans" before, but "Lass of Aughrim" is a new one on me!

Yes - its the most common Irish variant of that family. Was a great favourite of James Joyce, apparently. He could sing too!

um; just refreshing this as I was wondering if we ever concluded these were the lyrics???
The version in the film ends with: "My babe lies cold within my arms but none will ever know."
that is not how the version in the Digitrad site goes...any help here?
If listening to the film version would yield all the lyrics that would be great but I am pretty sure it is edited so that they do not all occur, though it has been a while and I may be wrong about that...

I have been asked by another non-specialist like myself for help in finding the words of a song called "The lass of Aughrim".

He thinks it is sung by Frank Patterson.

A friend whom I contacted thinks it may be a song usually sung to the tune Lord Gregory, but the Lord Gregory shown in the mudcat archive doesn't seem to fit the bill - it's not one of those songs which you "naturalise" by just changing a placename from another country with one with the same number of syllables from your own Can anyone help, please?

The James Joyce connection is explained in detail in Ellmann's (sp?) biography of Joyce. If you're interested, there's a page reference in one of the threads accessible via the link which I posted above.

JJ's wife Nora Barnacle used to sing the song which she had got from her mother, but when he visited Mrs Barnacle in Galway she sang three stanzas more than Nora used to, and these, if I remember correctly, are the stanzas used in "The Dead".
