Subject: The Lass of Aughrim From: Becky0 Date: 07 Jan 99 - 03:45 PM I've been looking for the lyrics to an Irish folk song named "The Lass of Aughrim." I've checked what seems to be all the possible websites. Do you have any ideas on how I can get the lyrics? |
Subject: RE: The Lass of Aughrim From: Martin Ryan. Date: 07 Jan 99 - 04:32 PM Becky This song is usually known as "Lord Gregory". It's basically Scottish, with strong Irish versions, nowadays. There are several versions in the Digital Tradition database (top right of the forum page gives a search engine). Check these and come back if you need any more! Regards Messages from multiple threads combined. Messages below are from a new thread. |

Subject: RE: Lyric req: The Lass of Aughrim From: Terry Date: 06 Oct 99 - 12:03 PM Lovely song. I first heard it in the film "The Dead" which is based on the Joyce short story in which the song is integral to the plot. Unfortunately, I don't have any recording of it. If I remember correctly, the poor lass brings her illegitimate baby to the home of his wealthy father and is turned away. The only lyrics I remember: The rain falls on my locks, the dew wets my skin. My babe lies cold within my arms, but none will let me in. |
Subject: RE: Lyric req: The Lass of Aughrim From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Oct 99 - 02:56 PM Sounds like "Lord Gregory", aka "The Lass of Loch Royale", "Fair Isabell of Rochroyal", etc. "Lord Gregory" will find you 3 versions on the Database, though the midi links seem to be broken at the moment. I've come across "Lass of Arrans" before, but "Lass of Aughrim" is a new one on me! Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Lyric req: The Lass of Aughrim From: Martin _Ryan Date: 06 Oct 99 - 02:58 PM Malcolm Yes - its the most common Irish variant of that family. Was a great favourite of James Joyce, apparently. He could sing too! Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyric req: The Lass of Aughrim From: Peg Date: 05 Apr 00 - 02:39 PM um; just refreshing this as I was wondering if we ever concluded these were the lyrics??? The version in the film ends with: "My babe lies cold within my arms but none will ever know." that is not how the version in the Digitrad site goes...any help here? If listening to the film version would yield all the lyrics that would be great but I am pretty sure it is edited so that they do not all occur, though it has been a while and I may be wrong about that... peg |
Subject: Lass of Aughrim From: GUEST,Roger.O'Keeffe@cec.eu.int Date: 11 Feb 02 - 11:07 AM I have been asked by another non-specialist like myself for help in finding the words of a song called "The lass of Aughrim". He thinks it is sung by Frank Patterson. A friend whom I contacted thinks it may be a song usually sung to the tune Lord Gregory, but the Lord Gregory shown in the mudcat archive doesn't seem to fit the bill - it's not one of those songs which you "naturalise" by just changing a placename from another country with one with the same number of syllables from your own Can anyone help, please? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lass of Aughrim From: Jeri Date: 11 Feb 02 - 11:14 AM Roger, the lyrics and some information can be found in this thread. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lass of Aughrim From: Jeri Date: 11 Feb 02 - 11:43 AM No problem, Roger. The database of songs and threads is searchable, so it's pretty easy to check for previous questions and answers about a song. The real work was done by folks in that other thread, who found and posted the information. Enjoy! |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LASS OF AUGHRIM From: Wolfgang Date: 09 Jul 02 - 05:41 AM I see now that a three verses version is at several places across the web. here's one: LASS OF AUGHRIM If you'll be the lass of Aughrim As I am taking you mean to be Tell me the first token That passed between you and me. O don't you remember That night on yon lean hill When we both met together Which I am sorry now to tell. The rain falls on my yellow locks And the dew it wets my skin; My babe lies cold within my arms; Lord Gregory, let me in. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyric req: The Lass of Aughrim From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 09 Jul 02 - 05:42 AM The James Joyce connection is explained in detail in Ellmann's (sp?) biography of Joyce. If you're interested, there's a page reference in one of the threads accessible via the link which I posted above. JJ's wife Nora Barnacle used to sing the song which she had got from her mother, but when he visited Mrs Barnacle in Galway she sang three stanzas more than Nora used to, and these, if I remember correctly, are the stanzas used in "The Dead". |
Subject: RE: Lyric req: The Lass of Aughrim From: Wolfgang Date: 09 Jul 02 - 05:51 AM Some more information is in the Mudcat thread Lass of Acron. That thread (Lass of Acron) is a candidate for retitleing or merging. Wolfgang |
