Bobert Bobert Bobert...

Just a little hospital etiquette for you:

1. Flirt with the nurses but do not touch.
2. Say please when requesting the REALLY GOOD pain meds
3. Wave and blow kisses as you shout goodbye on your way out the door

Sending all good thoughts and prayers your way. Wishing I lived closer so I could lend a hand...well...maybe not literally...but...you know what I mean!!

Love you Friend!!!!

XOXOXOOXOXOX

Michelle

Well, although it is 7:30 here it is just about noon now where Bobert lives. He should be up and talking by now.

May the pain and discomfort be much less than you feared, Bob, and the rewards much greater than you hoped.

Well, well, well...

The deed is done and I an sitting here typing with one hand with my hand starin' at me... It's in a foam rubber contraption with various holes an slots that i guess works to immobilize body parts... It is very strange in that my hand is peeping out the top of this thing only 6 inches from my face yet it feels like its on my lap an' when I touch it it with my left hand the left hand says to to my brain that ain't mine but some dead guys hand...

Reckon it will take several more hours to get over dead arm to pain arm...

Sleep time....

B`

Spaw... you mean... a transplant? So, until the cast is off, will Bobert have to unzip his fly to count change?

If you have never seen a one-handed man count change, think about it. Great party joke. Well, in my crowd.

Good to hear from you, Mr. Beauxbear. Don't try to do too much too soon, and no propping power tools on the cast in lieu of having a second hand to do the work.

Checked out Big Daddy and he's still da' man, Spawzer...

Just went down for 2 hours... No, not that, ya'll...Sheeeesh... Ya'll are some bored people... I mean, i just took a long nap... That gettin' up at 4:30 in the mornin' sucks...

The hand is still a complete stranger... Dead, dead, dead... I think they do this to ya' so that when you start gettin' the feelings back in it that you're happy to get he pain with 'um...

One bit og good news is that while I was nappin' my step-son borrowed our car and went off a bought a new keyboard with the letters on the keys!!! The old one was shot and only he letters that you use very often had the letters ob the keys so seein' as I don't know where stuff is I've spent a lot of time having to go back, delete and guess again... So now if I don't make sense it is because I am indeed senseless...

But what about the Handy Dandy Retrofitted Guitar Slide? If you forgot to give to one to the surgeon to hook up for you, I can mail some Superglue and Duct tape so the P-Vine can make the slide operational on the No Feeling Wrap Around Hand Thingie.

So, what does the "cast" look like? Is it a cast? Did they give you loopy drugs? Did you get pics? Did you chat up the nurses? You know... the important questions.

Cast: 1/4 mile of white gauze + 1/4 mile of designer gauze...

Cradle: 24"X10"X10 block of foam rubber with holes for arm... No strap or sling... I'll fix that tomorrow 'cause I gotta wear the thing for the next 5 days to keep elevated...

Speaking of block??? it's still blockin'... Think I'd rather have he pain rather than this block of wood for an arm....

BTW, I can't type but with one finger so ya'll are in luck... No ramblin' Bobert stories fir awile... lol...

BTW, thanks fir the support, stories, info, jokes, etc...

I had arthroscopic surgery on my knee once, and when I saw the doctor a few hours later, asked him when the anesthetic would wear off. He laughed and said "a couple hours ago, at least". If they've packaged you really well, you might not have much pain at all. I hate the numbness, so I understand where you're comin' from.

Congrates, Spawzer... I don't what to think too much about you and an electrical device that lights up and performs even under the covers of your bed in the dark of night so I won't...

As fir me doing a good job??? Hey, all I did was not chicken out...

As fir pushing too hard... There's gonna be a time the pushing is gonna be a good thing... That ain't now... I'd just be happy to get to the pins 'n needles 'cause I'm told that comes a couple hours before everything wakes up...

No reason to take a pain pill before trying to go to sleep... Could be a long night...

"But I really had no choice but to do it..."

That's what I said. Ya weren't gonna change yer mind so just do it and don't ween. Ya done it. Now ya gotta do the recovery. Even if the pain comes... IF the pain comes... IFFFF... ya gotta recover. Follow the doc's orders. And, I ain't shittin you when I say THIS... if you start goin and tryin ta do stuff even though you ain't physically stressin that thumb and end up gettin the wound infected, yer fucked, BIG time. Whatever you do, do NOT risk infection. It could be FAR worse than what you endured before the op. Trust me... please.

We always have choices, Bobert.

And you and others, and many of us who will need to follow a bit later also have the benefit of the significant advances that have been made in just the past 10 years in medicine and surgical procedures to joints needed for fine motor skills.

It also helps to remember that regardless of surgery, many of us ain't spring chickens anymore.

Go to sleep. Dream sweet. Azaleas starting to bloom. Hellebore babies waiting to be potted up and passed back to you. Guitar necks patiently waiting to be stroked or hammered, but only in good time.

Well, well, well...

Seem the "block" clocked out and the "pain" clocked in...

OUCH!!!

Funny - wee, not exactly funny - part is that the thumb doesn't hurt a bit but feels like someone is squeezing my hand to fight and my knuckles are all squished together like if the bandage is too tight...

But, too late to change my mind and I might have gotten 5-6 hours of sleep...

Squished hand: the bandage is likely a little snug on purpose as some compression keeps swelling down. (Along with you keeping your hand above the level of your heart.) Just make sure your fingers don't turn white... or blue. (If they go green, then there's always the 'hook' option)

The pain should begin to abate rather quickly. (That's 'quickly' to the rest of us. Not so much, to you.)

Sumabich hurtin' but I do pain purdy good... After all, I am a married man... lol... Never mind that last crack... Thought I might stir up somethin' with the womenz to take my mind off everything...

Still waiting for the nurse to call back to see why the bone i the hand under my little finger is in so much pain when the thumb doesn't seem to hurt at all???

Fun, fun, fun but, yeah, Ill br back playin music in a couple months...

Hang in but don't be an effing hero. When you are in pain, take pain killers. If you only take them when needed, you will not become dependent. If the pain does not go away over time, TELL YOUR DOCTOR!!!

A thought here: When I first got to Juneau 20-some years ago I walked the hillside staircases and mountain trails with great abandon. My knee went out, bigtime. Could hardly walk, couldn't sleep, although every morning it felt better than when I'd gone to bed.

This went on for a week or so then one day lying, reading, on my bed with my leg propped high with pillows a thought popped into my head: What does this pain remind me of?

And the answer: Muscle spasms.

And that is what it was. Major stretching exercises took care of it. But my main point is that when I knew what it was I could deal with it, mentally as well as physically.

Might the tight 'squeezing' be muscle cramping, Bob?

Depending what the nurse says, you might wanna try Kendall's idea of CQ10 and OJ just in case it is muscle cramping.
