When I open the weather thread

I see it at the top of this page, but not the weather thread, gnu. I don't know what it's about.

Hi gnu,

I Googled this: ;-) Here." /> appears at the top of the page.

and the search returned info about creating surveys on web pages:

;-) Here." /> appears at the top of the page.

Although it didn't have the punctuation symbols on the pages I looked at, some of it probably relates to writing html scripts - which I don't know a lot about.

Thanks, Helen. I am cooking supper and, at a quick glance, being technologically declined, I still do not get it.

If it was supposed to be hearty affrirmation, it should have read "Hear, hear!!".

I hate it when ne'er-do-wells get the two confused.

gnu,

If it relates to surveys, it is a template so that the owner of the webpage can put relevant text in the link and/or title of the survey.

Html uses slashes as part of the code to identify what needs to be done, e.g. making the text bold or italic, etc

But, on the other hand, it's a bit funny that there are emoticons   ;-) in the middle of the text.

And the other funny thing is that the end of your first post is now appearing at the top of the page:

";-) Here.." / > ;-) Here." /   > appears at the top of the page. Huh?"

Maybe we need one of the Joe-Clones to check this out?

Well, I have a very definitive answer for you: "I dunno."

So....I asked Max. I'm sure he will come and explain this thing to us. He's good at that.

The only "possibly authoritative" sites I find in Google results relating to the phenomenon appear to be concentrated around ".ca" origins (Canada). As past attempts by most of the rest of us at understanding almost anything relating to that region have been completely hopeless, I guess we'll have to leave it up to Max to decide whether an explanation is merited, or whether it's a fluke that just needs to be fixed.

Several sites appear to be instructions about using specific programs/applications peculiar to a particular organization (several are schools, but a couple of "municipal" orgs also appear) and the fluke might have appeared here if someone thought that mudcat works the same way as their usual site. None of those give sufficient information to identify whether the "feature" may be peculiar to Java or CMS coding, although both are mentioned on various of the sites.

John

Now... ads are appearing at the top of threads. As well, Mudcat is freezing for me when they occur and I have to refresh. Max definitely needs to know about this. I tried to copy one and send it to Max but the copy function froze halfway thru... in several attempts. Then, I had to refresh.

I dunno squat about this stuff but I know something is wrong.

As do I, Rapparee. I still see the symbols gnu refers to at the top of this page, though not with any other thread.

hit "ctrl U" in your browser ...let it load, then scroll down thru the code. That will surely clear things up......

I'd guess it appears to be a fragment left over from some template. The string with the mystery text appears in the thread's meta-data.

Look at the weather thread

In gnu's post, Date: 03 Mar 12 - 01:48 PM :

"You live in Maine, right? > ;-)

"Here..."

[Note - I added a couple of spaces after the ">", just in case it is behaving like a piece of html code]

The words at the top of that thread are: ;-) Here.." / > ;-) Here." / >

[Again - I added a couple of spaces before & after the "/" & the ">", just in case it is behaving like a piece of html code]

Maybe it's picking up the text right after the punctuation and putting it at the top of the page.

Just an idea to investigate. And I don't know html more than as a passing acquaintance, many years ago, so I don't know enough about what all the bits and bobs in it mean.

"This could be the last snow storm of the season but I don't want to take that chance."

You live in Maine, right? > ;-)

Here... VERY strange. A snowsquall, followed by sleet, turning to rain soon and the temp going up to 8C. On another thread, 999 saw flocks of Canada Geese in southern Quebec. It's MARCH!

Strange not to be shovelling. And, I am NOT complaining.

Yes, gnu, the Mudcat has been locking up for me too. I have to close IE to get rid of the hourglass. Other sites seem to be fine.
