Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Mar 12 - 10:54 AM Yup. It's a sports-nutrition way of saying that one's blood sugar has crashed due to insufficient calories and excess activity. Bonking is even more likely if one also fails to properly sustain hydration. === I think some folks also use this as a derogatory slang term for..... something else, as in "He's bonking the boss's wife." :~) ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Mar 12 - 11:46 AM JLOTMABLMYAIKE! (try and figure that out...) "Bonk!" is the sound made when one of the 3 stooges konks another of the 3 stooges on his noggin, using his knuckles (nyuck! nyuck!), his clenched fist, or a handy hammer or other carpentry tool. |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: gnomad Date: 21 Mar 12 - 11:50 AM Can also mean a physical blow (slang) as in "He bonked me on the head". Unfortunately there is no agreement as to how hard a blow constitutes a "bonk"; anything from a playful tap to lethal is covered. |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Mar 12 - 11:57 AM Yes, "bonk" and "konk" essentially mean the same thing in that respect. Chongo frequently bonks or konks bad guys...and sometimes they bonk or konk him. It is better to bonk than to be bonked, to be the bonker, not the bonkee. At least, that's what Chongo tells me. Bonnie, on the other hand, apparently spent a good deal of time and energy trying to be bonked by Clyde, so it all depends on how you interpret the word. |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: Bettynh Date: 21 Mar 12 - 12:00 PM My first thought was "Bonk on the head," and you've nailed the source, Little Hawk. The video gamers seem to have used it as the name for an energy drink. |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: GUEST,Seayaker Date: 21 Mar 12 - 12:01 PM In Rossendale, Lancashire it was a dialect term for a bank, hill, or rise e.g. "I'm goin' up bonk" It all depends on the context. |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: saulgoldie Date: 21 Mar 12 - 12:12 PM I do know "bonk" from cycling. Silly cyclists--not drinking enough water. I thought the word for sexual intercourse was "boink" not "bonk." Of course, the UK and the US do many things differently... Saul |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: JohnInKansas Date: 21 Mar 12 - 12:37 PM The last time I looked at anything to do with Batman it was in the early comic books and it was all "Biff" BOP" and "POW." I think in original usages, the meanings were all pretty much the same, including "Bonk." There was a tendency some decades ago to limit "bonk" to "blows to the head," which in some cases could be self-inflicted accidents, while the other terms primarily meant blows inflicted by one aggressor against another. Various places have a tendency to pick up on a specific meaning for generic terms, and established meanings in local vernacular may lead some to believe that the term then means only the local or "cultural class" common usage. Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 21 Mar 12 - 02:37 PM Your conk is your nose. Clonk (verb) is to hit somebody, it's also an onamatopaeic word for the sound made by a hit (as in cartoons) so is clump(noun), common in HM Prisons ("He'll be getting a clump") As a child in the forties, bonk meant the same as clonk, but now you dare't say it! |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Mar 12 - 03:00 PM The trouble with "boink" is that you can find hardly any good rhymes for it. Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Mar 12 - 03:18 PM True. The 3 Stooges were very well acquainted with that problem. If you look at them now, you have to wonder how three such singularly unattractive and weird little men managed to build a lengthy and lucrative career for themselves in the entertainment business. It worked fine then, but I doubt that it would nowadays. One really striking thing about them was how short they were...not quite as short as Danny De Vito, but pretty near. I've been reading up on Larry, the one with the wild hairdo: apparently he was a professional level boxer AND a superb concert violinist! His actual name was Larry Fine. Moe's name was Moe Howard, and Curly was Moe's younger brother, replacing their other brother, Shep, in the later years. The phrase "a face only a muthah could love" comes to mind....as does the term "Soitinly!" |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 21 Mar 12 - 11:37 PM "Bonk" is onomatopoetic. It is what it sounds like. If you hit your head against a wall, it goes "bonk". If you hit the headboard of a bed against a wall while doing the Horizontal Mambo, it goes "bonk". If a marathon runner "hits the wall", even though the wall is strictly metaphorical, it goes "bonk", even though the sound is even more metaphorical than the wall. If it goes "bonk",there's a good chance somebody's going to call it "bonking". |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Mar 12 - 09:26 PM Geeziz Hawk....What a complete load of shit. You are probably a big fan of Mitt Romney........... and btw.....Shemp was both before and after Curley if you recall. Then when Shemp died there were a couple of unrelated assholes who filled in as the fat guy stooge. They all sucked.....really bad......simpleass act with nothing funny...... Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: Little Hawk Date: 22 Mar 12 - 11:09 PM You are the one who's a big fan of Mitt Romney, Spaw. I know that you have a golden idol of him in your living room, and you bow down and kiss its feet every night before going to bed. It figures that a dumbass who watches NASCAR for hours and thinks shopping at WalMart is a consciousness-raising experience and thinks he has a 46 inch long dick would also worship Mitt Romney! I didn't recall that Shemp was after Curly, though. Did Curly die first and then get replaced by Shemp? Yeah, I thought they ALL sucked too...dreadful acting...godawful dumb sight gags...exaggerated and totally repetitive, mindless crap. It defies imagination how they could have built a successful career on such garbage. Well, at least we agree on the Stooges! ;-D But I'll never join you in your unholy lust for Mitt Romney. Not a chance. |
Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Mar 12 - 12:34 AM I'm always amazed with guys like Mitt who happily lie when the truth would sound better. He's never held a position he didn't like until he claims he never believed what he had been standing for. They say if you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything and Mitt has stood for everything at different times and seems saddened and/or angry when people don't fall for his crap. His Dad is probably the only person flipping more than Mitt because I'm sure George Romney is turning over in his grave. Mitt is something any father would be proud of doncha' think? Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'bonk' mean ? From: mayomick Date: 24 Mar 12 - 09:59 AM The frequent use of "bonk on the head" for "knock on the head" led to "bonk" being used as an alternative slang for the word "head" in the east end of London. (I assume that the noun "bonk" was taken from the verb and not the other way around .) Somebody wearing an unusual looking hat for example might be asked "What's that you've got on your bonk?" That was back in the days when " a bunk up" and not "a bonk" (certainly never a "boink") meant the same thing as "a shag" . Simpler times they were and all the better for it. |
