Subject: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: G-Force Date: 06 May 12 - 03:59 PM You would think with all the recent spotlight on ethics in the media that they might have changed their ways, but no, the Sun has already started to belittle the new England football manager on the basis of a perceived speech impediment (one so minor that I for one hadn't even noticed it). Perhaps they thought their readers wanted Harry Rednapp instead, even though in the last few months Tottenham have been sliding down the league (and getting slaughtered by Chelsea in the cup) while Hodgson's WBA have been climbing it. Hodgson has been talked about as a possible England manager since the 1980's. It's farcical that it's taken the FA until now to give him a go (and wasting millions on Erikson and Capello in the meantime). My main point is, though: when will the English wake up and realise that the prospects of the England team are being undermined in this way by a foreign-owned media which owes no allegiance to this country? |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: John MacKenzie Date: 06 May 12 - 04:53 PM I remember when matches kicked off at 2:30PM |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: beachcomber Date: 07 May 12 - 07:57 AM But surely this is par for the course? The media must have controversy to survive in a very competitive environment and will use whatever, in their experience, will normally arouse the most anger/excitement/seeking to right the mistaken attitude of their journalists, in order to sell papers. In Football, the most popular sport, this will mean a regular attempt to stir up trouble for some team or other - very often the international one. I shouldn't worry too much, when England play the vast majority of English people will support them and to hell with Murdoch's mouthings. Just don't expect too much, take each match as it comes. It will be team work, if anything, that will get England through how ever far they go.. |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 07 May 12 - 07:11 PM Kick-off at 2.30pm? That must surely have been only north of the border, if at all? I wouldn't have minded 'arry, but think Roy is a marginally stronger candidate. The FA was irresponsible in allowing Redknapp speculation run unchecked for so long, but I can't blame them for deciding for once, and belatedly, to think about the money. I'm expecting Roy to handle the pressure better than most, and perhaps to get some decent results. |

Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: Acorn4 Date: 08 May 12 - 02:45 PM There is a rumour that Harry Redknapp's wife had had enough of the media after his previous brush with the law and not over keen. The only thing is if RH does screw up totally, we're into more "what if?" "Brian Clough" type speculation. If it wasn't going to be HR, then RH was probably the best choice, though the FA have probably indulged in the usual box ticking to make their appointment. |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: GUEST,Kenny B sans kuki Date: 08 May 12 - 06:46 PM Let me say first of all i am not an England supporter but if i was on the FA panel looking at someones record for manager I would have picked RH . He has a better record than HR in games won with the exception of the Liverpool experiance where he was undermined by KD as were others. He is much better at handling the media than HR. I think he will do better than other recent managers. BTW I think HR has been an excellent manager with Tottenham but I think the media were looking for another "fall Guy". At the moment FA 1 media 0 second leg to follow |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: The Sandman Date: 09 May 12 - 03:47 PM he will undermine himself, given enough time, but I think he might do a fairly good job, in the meantime |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: banjoman Date: 10 May 12 - 07:04 AM I have no doubt that he is a good manager, despite the Liverpool experience, however, I find him totally lacking in Charissma which does nothing for his public image which surely has to be a part of the position of England manager |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: beachcomber Date: 10 May 12 - 11:02 AM I don't remember that Alf Ramsey had much "charisma" ? He didn't do too badly though, did he ? |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: MGM·Lion Date: 10 May 12 - 01:00 PM "Charisma" is a bit of a dodgy term in the context. Who, in this field, would you say had it? Fergie? Hardly. Wenger? Maybe. Dalglish? Equivocally. Mourinho? In ♠♠! Would Redknapp have had more than Hodgson, do you think? And if so, how? I agree re Ramsey. Charisma seems to me very low down on the list of desirable attributes. ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: autolycus Date: 11 May 12 - 03:57 AM Getting on Hodgson's back already just highlights English hypocrisy. Why? See the following link http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2137536/Martin-Samuel-Roy-Hodgson--him.html |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: Big Al Whittle Date: 11 May 12 - 08:36 PM I did a gig in Poole tonight, There were a load of people in the pub from Sandbanks where harry lives. Apparently Harry's wife didn't want him to take the England job, because he had a bypass operation and commuting up to Brum would have been more strain than she thought he could handle. |
Subject: RE: BS: undermining Roy Hodgson From: beachcomber Date: 12 May 12 - 07:29 AM Old Harry could have quite a lot on his plate if Spurs advance to the European Champions League next year. Maybe the England job will seem a doddle passed up, come May 2013 ? Saw Roy being interviewed on TV lately, he didn't appear in any way apprehensive (- yet?)I suppose that his first big test will be the Panel announcement. |
