I have a favourite (cheap) Whisky in the UK... It is Grants Sherry Cask Whisky..... matured in Oloroso sherry casks.. it has a taste all its own..... what is your fave whisky?    Of course I do like the 'older' whiskies but as a cheap regular drink... Grants Sherry Cask is my No1.

Sainsbury do an 'Own Brand' Single malt Irish that is excellent at under £15 for 70 cl !

Favourite at the cheap end that I rarely see in England is Stewarts Cream of the Barley. I try to stock up when North of the Border

Highland Park for anytime, anyday....

Talisker for 'opening up the taste buds'

Cragganmore for a late Winter night's dram

Macallan for times when you can't get Highland Park

and.... Springbank for a 'different' set of flavors... salty, touch of peat...but smooth. The older the better, but quite decent at 12 yrs.

and...Tullamore Dew in the ceramic crock....

(sure.. I'd happily drink Aberlour)

Famous Grouse for every day -- nice by itself, and not too posh to mix with Stone's Ginger Wine to achieve a Whisky Mac.

For special occasions, there's Writers' Tears (my current fave) and Glenmorangie and ... And ... ! I could go on and on, but I won't.

It's obvious that those elsewhere have more choices, but in my part of the US almost anything on the shelves is good enough if you're going to mix it.

On the other hand, if you just take a sip now and then, I'll agree with Willy that the ONLY thing that doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth is Jack Daniels Old No 7 (Black Label). I've tried lots of others (I've had well over half a century for the trials), and if there's another decent one (consistently available here) I haven't found it.

If the question was intended to include "Scotch" - which I consider "something else," there would be a couple of possibilities, but I don't do much of that except on special occasions, and at my age I don't get invited to many of those.

I have not had it many times, but once enjoyed a sip of some that was quite smoky. I have heard that Crown Royal is the best, according to Dennis. He prefers Canadian ones to American ones.

I should take advice on beer from a Stella drinker? Great Lakes makes far better brews....... and Scotcch tastes like caraway seeds which go better in rye bread. Bourbon is the real thing but like Dan, I used to drink a lot of Jack.

Just for the record, Jack Daniels is the most popular whisky in the world. It's fine, but I can't drink it straight or on the rocks.

I first heard joke about Pope's phone # in 1954, in my last year at Cambridge, when I was a member of the Union's Kitchen Committee & someone put it in the suggestions book.

I don't drink these days, but I recall Vat 69, along with Grant's, as my favourite from long ago.

Re the 'whisky'/'whiskey' thing: traditionally it has been Scotch Whisky & Irish Whiskey [leaving out these transAtlantic variants]; but it is not hard & fast: Cutty Sark labels say 'Scots Whisky' (tho it says 'Scotch' on the home page of their website ~ most confusing!); & people still seem to buy it. However, the spelling distinction still applies. Are there any exceptions?

I could never stand Scotch until I found single malts. I told everyone that Scotch tasted like hair oil....then, in the movie "Mr. Roberts" they confirmed it!

Now, I suppose, there are a 'few' blended Scotches that are at least tolerable, but I never bother.

I can see why folks would go for Jack Daniels or George Dickel, but I don't drink enough to get used to them.

The worst whisky I ever drank was a blended Scotch. Duggans Dew O' Kirkintilloch. It would have to be improved to earn the handle, Panther piss.

I was once given a bottle of Crown Royal Canadian whiskey and quite liked it but I still prefer scotch over all others, including bourbon. My favourites are Talisker and Ardbeg. A friend once shared a very old Talisker with me which was simply phenomenal, I can't remember exactly how old it was but I don't think I have tried better.

Since Kirkintilloch is a place i know well your mention of Dugans Dew o'Kirkintilloch had me confused since I never remember a distillery there indeed it was a dry town till 1967. However a brief visit to the blog of an old native of the town brought an answer to the conundrum.

"There used to be occasions when Americans visiting Kirkintilloch asked to be directed to the Duggan's Dew distillery, and were disappointed to find that no such place existed.

In fact there was - and there still is - a popular whisky in America called "Duggan's Dew". The makers had taken the name from a series of short stories published in the Saturday Evening Post. Written by Guy Gilpatric 1896-1950, they featured Colin Glencannon, a ship's engineer on a tramp steamer who with his dog Mary had come originally from Kirkintilloch. He was very fond of a drink, his preference being the whisky made in his home town, and there was always a mention of "Duggan's Dew" in the stories. I believe a 39-episode series based on his adventures was produced for TV in the late 1950s but information about this is scarce.

The author himself had an adventurous life. An airman in the first World War, he became a stunt and test pilot, and took part in a number of films. In one film he had to crash a plane, but another "take" was needed, and he had to do it once more - with another plane, I presume. Incredible!"

The motto of the wee toon is still to be found on an old fountain on the main street and is apt to all whisky drinkers "Caw canny but caw awa"

Didn't know they made whiskey or whisky outside of Kentucky or Tennesee. Oh there's that stuff from Scotland which I imagine is just cheap vodka filtered through peat moss and colored with a dash of motor oil.

On our recent visit to Ireland I think I became converted from Scotch to Irish in matters of drinks that cheer and inebriated - in particular Middleton's Very Rare, which my brother-in-law will only get his grubby paws on if he is very, very good. Right this hot second I am enjoying Auchentoshan.

I am also partial to Eagle Creek bourbon.

I used to drink Scotch, and recently tried some Dewar's, but mainly I keep bourbon on hand, mostly for the occasional Manhattan, tho when in a macho mood I take it straight. Blind tests have shown that I cannot distinguish Jack Daniels from cheaper stuff, among which I prefer Old Crow for sentimental reasons, it being mentioned in a novel I like, _The Revolt of Mamie Stover_ by William Bradford Huie.
