Read here about how a Chihuahua dog located three missing girls.

Bell the wonder dog

I have always thought that Chihuahuas had to be the world's most hyper, overbred, ill-tempered and useless dogs, but now I see that I was wrong.

Three cheers for Bell!

Schitzu are my top hate - Bichon Frise my top scorn. But I also dislike anything doggy I have to WORRY if I tread on. Dogs, on their hind legs, should be nearly as tall as me.

"I have always thought that Chihuahuas had to be the world's most hyper, overbred, ill-tempered and useless dogs..."

The Chihuahua was bred in a country with very little food to feed the people, much less pet dogs.

Chihuahuas have a few things going for them...

         They don't eat much.

They make a huge amount of noise and let owners know that people are coming (aka watch dog).

If they attack, they can't do much more damage that to bite someone's big toe (trust me on that one).

This particular Chihuahua, of course, is obviously not a purebred (not that there's anything wrong with that). Wonder what the mix is. The Chi is not noted for its 'nose'.

they are also intensely loyal to one person & don't need much exercise - running thru the house is often enough.

A friend had one years ago which attacked his teddy bear whenever it could get near it, but didn't do a great lot of damage. I assume bear, which was a similar size to the dog, was too fluffy for the dog to get a real grip!

Richard, I thought the same as you do about Shih-tzus. My stepson keept bugging us to get one, and all I could think of was the obnoxiously spoiled Shih-tzu that starred in the Christopher Guest Best in Show movie. I was afraid my stepson would love the dog to the depths of obnoxiousness, that that together they would rule the household.

Well, after a year and a half of pestering, I finally gave in and let him get a Shih-tzu. We met with the breeder in a shopping mall parking lot, and the breeder had three dogs in a plastic tub. Josh picked a tricolor dog, and I noticed how nicely another dog was playing with the dog Josh picked. I had an idea - if we got two dogs, Josh's dog would pay more attention to the other dog than to Josh, and maybe they'd grow up to be real dogs. So, I got Ralph, a brindle-colored bundle of fur who looks like the head of a mop. I named him after Ralph Cramden, the Jackie Gleason character of the Honeymooners TV show. Josh named his dog Harry, after a Star Trek: Voyager character.

So, now it's eight years later and Josh is away at college, and the dogs are still with us. I was right - they turned out to be real dogs, and we've really enjoyed them. My 97-yr-old mother-in-law lives with us, and I swear those dogs keep my mother-in-law alive. She's content if she can sit in her chair with a dog on her lap.

Hey, the dogs even liked Micca, that consummate Cat Person.

So, Shih-Tzus can be good dogs, too.

Pdq, "making a tremendous amount of noise" is what I've always hated about Chihuahuas.

Joe, that's a great story about the Shih-tzus and your mother. I used to know a man, hyper and upsettable, who was trying to kick marijuana. It used to calm him wonderfully when my cat curled up in his lap.

I hope the parents in Georgia are formulating a plan so that their children don't get lost in the woods again.

Ebbie, you're right. Bell doesn't look like a Chihuahua. Looks like a very, very small golden retriever.

I generally have little use for the vast majority of the toy breeds. I really, really, really dislike bichons, maltese are cute, but have little use as anything other than an accessory. Shih Tzus are OK on a case by case basis, as are lhasa apsos. I'm not overly fond of chihuahuas. Pugs and terriers, on the other hand, I am very fond of.

And Micca likes dogs, he's been very fond of both of mine.

I've been off Chi'as since girlhood, when I visited a friend's house. I expected to get a nice hello from the family, but what I got was two mean and hysterical chi'as whom nobody could control.

Since then, I've read a book by a vet on how to deal with that. Basically, a dog hates to be excluded from a party. If a guest comes and your dog is aggressive, collar the dog and shut it up in a room. When it calms down, let it rejoin the party. If it acts aggressive again, shut it up again.

Repeat cycle until the dog figures out that its "I hate visitors" act means that it gets left out of the fun.

I love the new chihuahua here. I want to put her in a sailor suit. And take her busking with me.

Is there such a thing as a severely bent dog? Although I had never lived with one, I always thought pugs were cute, exotic looking and kind of neat.

However, a four-year-old pug that lives with an acquaintance (not a friend of mine) is passing strange.

Although he is obedient, I have never seen him act fond of anyone, including of his master. He is not fixed and is totally fixated on other dogs' private parts, paying little mind to their protests. And once, at music, seated on a friend of mine's lap, he rose and squatted and peed. My friend was livid.

I happen to know a little about the pug's owner - he is a drug-dealing sleazeball, imo - and I tend to believe that it's in the genes...

So did anyone give the poor dog who found the kids a cookie?

(The article didn't mention any reward.)

They should buy the dog a new wardrobe.
