Subject: Explain the BS rules
From: Grubby

Sorry to dig over old ground again Mudcatters, but I have been away from Mudcat travelling for a year and I need to know the rules for using the prefix BS.

Does it mean: (1)If I wish to just pass on a general comment or express my feelings about anything, I use the BS prefix.

(2) If I have a specific query in relation to music theory, chords, song requests etc, I use the apropriate prefix listed.

Good to be back Grubby

I'm no authority here, Grubby, but as near as I can figure out, it's just a flag that the thread is something other than music-related.

A couple of people have gotten their noses out of joint about some of the non-music threads, so I think a lot of people put the BS on just to tell those people that the thread probably won't interest them.

If somebody has a better explanation, please post it. I'd be curious to know too.

Welcome back.....

Since you are with us, you get to help us make the rules. Of late it seems that it is used for non-music related questions, comments, thoughts and stories. It may be like just a light conversation piece, or just killing time, or getting through a bad day, or anything non-academic (if you will). Or, just don't use it. It is what you make it. Don't sweat the rules, cause there aint none.

Its not Anarchy kat, it is a very sophisticated and complex system of global community and civilization that I developed in a trance, on something, in college. It is so beautifully complicated that it looks like it works all by itself, or sometimes not at all, with little or no intervention. I merely introduce fictional characters occasionally, created by me, Cleigh, and Cletus. Magic happens I tell ya. I wrote a paper on it but they called me crazy, then realized that I was not actually enrolled in their college, and they asked me to leave. So me, Cleigh and Cletus went our seperate ways, never fully giving up on the dream.

Ya' know, I'd be more than happy to have Cletus move in at your house Max, especially since you're getting a bigger place and all. 'Course he's lost without Paw since he's always out of matches to light up his farts. Between that and laying out front trying to piss up a slack rope, the cops are here all the time.

And thanks for setting it straight on BS....I thought it meant Brilliant Statements and since I never make any, I haven't used it as a prefix.

Max, I knew you were a kindred spirit. I never gave up on the dream either. Just went underground for many years. I've been traveling through this life incognito for so many years, waiting for the revolution to start rolling again. It's a very delicate revolution, mind you, but one the world seems ready for. What a hoot to get to be real people with each other, and have it all start out being about music. Very clever of you, m'dear.

Wyo Woman your mention of revolution reminded me of last Sunday, I was sitting on the sun deck strumming and singing a few tunes with my son, when we started singing Dylans Times Are a Changing. The thought occurred to me Geez I believed in that song at the time, but now many years on it did'nt happen did it! or not that I noticed anyway. Probably missed it bringing up a family and trying to earn a crust. Just a thought!

In which case "BS" would mean "Brownie Surprise."

Ain't had one of those suckers since 1974 when I found myself creeping along at about 10 mph on I-70 with one part of my brain screaming, "SLOW DOWN--TOO FAST" while another part was urging me to speed up before I got pulled over for doing 10 in a 55......And yet another part was shouting, "Ya' gotta' stop this stuff."

(speaking of "changes", last two verses of the Road by the River)

Rows and rows of new houses are built on the green
And a cinema stands where me cottage had been.
Oh, the river is there, but no trace can be seen,
Of the road by the river that flows through Raheen.

And so everything changes, and we change as well
And I'm sure that you, too, If the truth you would tell,
Wander back to some well beloved spot in your dreams,
Like the road by the river that flows thru Raheen.

See, we can relate ANY thread to folk songs.

I think the Revolution did happen and we were instrumental. I just think we got stymied in the middle and there's still much work to be done. But I have faith in the teens and 20-somethings. They're starting to get stirred up -- just need some leadership. And so many of them are absolutely the most splendid human beans we could imagine, with a deep sense of justice and fair play and respect for people with differences. I think we did our work well. Revolutions are never completed in one generation, and believing that is where many of us got lost and felt so disempowered. Human consciousness is a process, and by most measures, if you compare where we are now to where we were 30 years ago, we've accomplished a great deal.

(And re. the brownies -- my first experience with 'em was at a Jimi Hendrix concert in Norman, Oklahoma. My girlfriend and I had no idea how much you were supposed to do, so we put in about a bale. I have no real recollection of the concert -- just a bunch of frisbees sailing back and forth through the black lights they had up on stage... If pot is ever legalized, it will have to carry a warning: "This will make you chemically stoopid." Which has its place, I suppose, as long as you're not trying to operate heavy machinery such as cars, or carry on an intelligent conversation about something other than the funny smell in the room...)

Wha's funny about that smell, eh?? And did ya notice how bright and translucent that light bulb up there is, as though there were fires flickering around inside and making the outside glow with a phosphorescence that seems to engulf the whole thing and to spread beyond, seeming to draw you into it until your entire being is wrapped up in that one glowing sphere. Far out, man!

I discovered that it sometimes causes me to lose consciousness - not in the good way - I mean like falling down. Who knows why? So I am now regrettably walking the straight and narrow - at least in that regard. I suppose the next things to go will be the booze and then the coffee. If that happens, I think I may have to go to the Neil Young Center - IF they'll have me.

Now, Wyo, I have to disagree. Marijuana, when administered in the proper dose, has often been known to bring on an onslaught of creative thinking. However, it is a fine line between creative thinking and just being helplessly whacked. In one state you may find the key to life, in the other you may not find the key to your front door. Which is why I spent a lot of my youth climbing through windows.

Grubby, you don't think things have changed?? How old are you? That's rhetorical, BTW. Do you remember Black and White water fountains? Black and White bathrooms? Having to spell S E X... shhh. Full bathing suits? What whore would wear a bikini? Who the heck ever heard of alternate life styles? When women didn't have to go to college, cause it was a waste of money? You'll only get married and stay home with the kids! I know there have a lot more changes, but I can't think of them right now.

WW, two things. I'm so glad you mentioned and totally agree with you that todays kids are very positively powerful!! They question and they think.

I'll be the odd one out here and say that I like the use of the tags and can't see the point in having them if they are not used in any consistent way. In the absence of any rules, I have my own policy. If a music related topic fits one the the music tags, eg. Lyr Req, I would use it. If it was a music related topic that didn't fit, e.g. Is rap folk?, I wouldn't use any tag. If it was totaly off music, I would use the BS tag.

My only wish is that it was a different abbreviation as BS to me implies Bull Shit and assuming that is what it stands for, seems to be inappropriate and I would have thought something like OT (Off Topic) would be better. Anyway that's just my thoughts as long as I can continue to enjoy Mudcat, I am not really worried.

Well ... I remember the 60's and early 70's and I smoked pot and engaged in free love and had long straight hair that I rolled in beer cans every night to make it straight and I believed the words of all the peace and love songs I used to play and I played in coffee houses and smoked cigaretts and drank coffee sweetened with honey and ate hash brownies and I was sent to a finishing school after college to learn to take shorthand because in order to get a job I had to type 90 words per minute and take shorthand at 120 words per minute and had wonderful boyfriends and we believed we were going to change the world and I marched across the 14th Street Bridge in Washington DC with a lighted candle for peace and I dodged tires and chicken shit on May Day 1970 trying to get to work and then everything changed and disco became popular and I decided it was all for nothing ... moonchild

Nah, Moonchild. It wasn't all for nothing. It was a wonderful time, and it continues to be -- just doesn't fit our pictures of how it was supposed to look. I think the Internet, and lovely folk like Max, are actually the hope of some sort of fruition of many of those dreams and visions.

It was also an awful time. I've thought of writing my memoirs from those years and calling it "Everything You Know is Wrong," because much of that time was like that for me. The values my parents so carefully inculcated me with were passe, much of the new set of values we were experimenting with didn't really work for me, and I often didn't have a clue what was right to do or even to want. And so much of it seemed to turn to shit before our very eyes.

But life is always like that. It's never clear-cut, never all one way. It's always a process of sorting out, winnowing, stumbling. We lurch toward Paradise, we never ride the bullet train. But we do keep moving ahead, poco a poco. And this gathering is at least some evidence that something lasting happened/is happening. Here we are, and this is outrageous. Unimaginable, and absolutely in its infancy.

Here's my credo, born in my Jimi-days and held in my heart: I stand for a bullshit-free world, where human beings treat each other with honesty and respect, where each of us dances according to the music that sings to us and shares what's in our hearts to share, and where we give thanks ceaselessly for the profound joy and delight of getting to be a human being.

Who stands with me?

I am Spartacus...

You know, my friends, that sometimes I make a connection between that strange and beautiful time, and all of you in this strange and beautiful place. And it's a bit like we all knew each other as starry-eyed, or righteously angry, or tragically cynical kids in that long-ago time. As if we had sat together in honest discouse; the marchers, the soldiers, the weekend hippies, and the young republicans. And it is as if we spread far and wide in pursuit of our grown-up lives, and struggled, and were loved, and created, and lost, and found enlightenment, and were made bitter, and flew, stumbled, or dreamed our way into this surprising place. It seems that I have had these discussions, bared these feelings, lost my temper, wept, with all of you before as I am doing now. And I do not mean that you remind me of people that I knew in that time, but that my overwhelming impression is that you are in fact those people.

And I'll tell you the truth- I missed you all badly. And I am glad to have found you again.

Aw, garsh.

I remember when we used to wear costumes to class for no good reason. Feel like wearing a top hat and tails? Wear 'em to American History. Feel like dressing like a monk? Go ahead to the coffee house -- someone will think it's fun. One day the man who was to become my husband showed up in a suit and tie, which hardly anyone really *got* at first. His statement was that it's ALL costume, it's all perspective, and that's elastic. It doesn't really mean anything, except what we say it means, but we all act as if there are clay tablets somewhere saying what we may and must not wear, how we may and must not act...

Not a bad line of thinking for a bunch of kids...

Leej, I thank you for your words. I think in one short paragraph you summed up many of the thoughts I have had floating around about the people of this wonderful community.

The bond is all the more special when it is experienced in person. I recall the feeling of arriving at an old friend's house on the evening I drove up to Annap's first gathering. We all sat around and talked and sang together without reservation or pretension until the wee hours of that Friday night. And in the morning Bill Sables and I were the first ones up. We sat on the steps while Bill had his morning cigarette and we talked together like people who had known each other all our lives.

This same kind of feeling came over me time and time again at the Getaway. I know I was not the only one to feel intense connection with so many.

I feel it often when I am here at the Mudcat. It is a feeling beyond compare. Does it get better than this? Yes. When you see this bunch in person the emotions are deeper and wider than can be expressed by my choppy ramblings.

People of the Mudcat, I love you.
