Subject: BS: Kendall's blood pressure
From: kendall
Date: 10 Oct 12 - 07:48 PM

I've had a battle with high blood pressure since I was in my early 20s. The last few years it has been controlled with Metoprolol, but the last 4 days it has jumped around like a fart in a mitten. Now, it's too high, top of 212/107 low of 98/77.

I have an appointment with my Doctor on Friday. He just prescribed lisinopril.
Here's a good one for you, my ex wife has forbidden me to die before she does. She said she can't imagine living in a world without me.

If she had felt that way 16 years ago we would still be together. WOMEN!

I've taken Lisinopril for 20 years. It was the last thing they tried...
but my BP was never that high.

It is an east drug to take.

Kendall, here in UK, if one has a BP of 210 over 107, one would be hospitalised immediately as a medical emergency. Good luck with the medication, and I hope your BP goes down to a safe level very soon!

Certainly would be the case if it was sustained at that level, but probably not if it was fluctuating. Believe it or not, the diastolic (lower) reading threshold for "accelerated hypertension" (the kind that invariably gets you hospitalised as an emergency)is 120!

Exercise and High Blood Pressure
Many medications exist for lowering high blood pressure, but you may prefer to take a more natural approach to lowering blood pressure. Exercise can work as well as many medications for lowering blood pressure, and there are no unpleasant side effects. Moreover, exercise can increase overall health, including regulating moods and sleep patterns. You may choose exercise alone to treat high blood pressure or in combination with dietary changes, medication or other lifestyle adjustments.

Exercise strengthens your heart, which means your heart doesn't have to work as hard to supply blood and oxygen to your body. When your heart isn't working as hard, the stress on your arteries is less, lowering your blood pressure. In addition, exercise helps control your weight, which is another factor that contributes to high blood pressure. In some cases, regular exercise is enough to lower blood pressure without medication.

'Kendall, here in UK, if one has a BP of 210 over 107, one would be hospitalised immediately as a medical emergency.'

Not so: the nurse apologised for a malfunctioning monitor when I clocked up 212/140, tried another machine and got the same result. I was immediately placed on a regime of bisoprolol, perindropil and co-amilofruse, which soon got it back to an average of 120/76.

At the time I was managing a hectic office, and my father was in a terminal illness. May have had something to do with it...

How often are you taking it? Once a day at the same time after sitting quietly for a while will give you a more accurate picture. Blood pressure fluctuates with exercise and stress. If you just finished attacking the car for stalling and stormed into the house with "syphilitic son of a whore", don't take your blood pressure.

Becca, I am the same weight I was at the age of 19. I still wear the belt that was issued to me when I joined the Warden force in 1958.
Working on antique cars is exercise. I just built a plywood box to house the well pump down cellar. Digging potatoes helps.

Running my mouth and jumping to conclusions, not so much.

You also spend a large portion of your day sitting in the recliner...just because you are the same weight, does not mean you are in shape...

You need 15-20 minutes of cardio exercise every day - getting your heart rate up to the necessary levels. Working on cars, building boxes and digging 10 potatoes is not cardio.
And before you accuse me of being the proverbial black-calling pot, I am seriously overweight, true, but my blood pressure is perfect and I take no medications....I also work out for an hour a minimum of twice per week.

Good cardiac exercise, Kendall, can be had by going down to the local tavern, picking out the biggest son of a howah there and beating the crap out of him (or her). You should do this for at least twenty minutes every morning and evening. Soon you will find that your blood pressure had gone down and stays down.

In the first place, no one but Jacqui and I knows how much time I spend in the recliner.
Second, I have arthritis in every joint which makes exercise painful.
Third, I'm pushing 80 with no serious medical conditions.

My eye doctor told me just yesterday that I have two of the most healthy eye he has ever seen. No sign of Macular degeneration, and no sign of any aging. If I ever have to give up my drivers license it won't be because of my eyesight.

"If I ever have to give up my drivers license it won't be because of my eyesight." Forget my prescription of "self-medication" (whiskey).

I was gonna mention staying in a calm environment with little stress and dim lighting... like the cellar.

Now... listen up BIG TIME... 107/64? Here's something you HAVE to do that is MORE important than "paying attention" to high blood pressure right now. Do NOT do anything to raise that pressure quickly. That includes getting pissed off because you should have not used a crescent wrench and just skinned yer knuckles. That includes digging potatoes at more than a VERY leisurely rate. That pressure is pretty low and, although MUCH better than high pressure, it can cause problems if it is increased rapidly. If you experience ANY changes in vision or have ANY feeling of dizzieness or light-headedness, immediately drop the wrench and all strenuous physical activity and breath deeply, calm down and walk slowly until it subsides... do NOT operate any machinery... do NOT drive.

I can explain all of that as a doc explained it to me when it happened to me but just trust me, take my advice to heart and discuss smae with your doc tomorrow.

PS... my GP said "no connection" between your eye problems and low blood pressure, but, if it happens again, see an eye doc. It did. I saw my eye doc and he was PISSED! Called my GP and explained it to him while I was sitting in his exam room. My eye doc to me to eat salty potatoe chips once or twice a week until my BP stabilized.... I like him.

I take a combination (2 pills taken together) of atenolol and lisinopril. Atenolol alone didn't do the job.

Tom has the opposite problem. He takes metoprolol, but was ordered not only to stop taking the lisinipril, but to take his blood pressure before he takes the metoprolol to make sure it's not too low.

Politics is the spoiler these days. Hard to get an accurate BP reading with all the bullshit being slung.

BTW... I shall conduct an experiment when I achieve stasis in the same state as when my BP went too low. Specifically, I wish to investigate the use of eating cherries for lowering BP. Cherry season is well over but I shall find a way as soon as I can recreate the circumstances. I believe eating cherries works but I have no evidence until I test my theory in a controlled manner. Right now, my BP is up and I have reverted to Coversyl Plus and self-medication to reduce it. It is working but I'd rather eat cherries.

Hi

I have been treated for high BP for many years with a succession of medications- at the moment I am on Ramipril and Amlodipine. These have always controlled my pressure successfully - BUT recently I had to go to hospital to have a cataract operation on my left eye after having the right one done a couple of months ago.

When I had the Pre-op examination my BP was 193/99 and the surgeon would not agree to operate unless my BP was monitored and lowered.
On monitoring my BP for a period of weeks - including "ambulatory monitoring" for 1 week - my BP was seen to be perfectly OK average 0f 120/70. So I went for another pre-op examination. Guess what?? My BP was again "sky high" and I was refused the operation again. This has happened a couple of times more. They have decided that all of a sudden I have "white coat hypertension".

So my medication was slightly changed and I went through another period of monitoring only for the above problem to be repeated again.

I will say at this time that I have had several previous operations ( including 32 weeks of radio-therapy for throat cancer) as well as prostate and other minor ops. Indeed I had the right eye sucessfully operated on as recently as May this year and never had any problems with BP.

I do not fear operations or hospital (indeed I requested this op because I am having difficulty with managing the imbalance between the two eyes).

The surgeon is now talking again to my GP and they have decided to prescribe Diazipan to be taken on the day of the next pre-op and of course on the Op day should this work.
I am now monitored(self) 3 times every day and the pressures are well within the guidelines of 140/80 set by my GP for a person of my age and "stature".

My GP is not confident that the Diazipan will work but says it is the next logical step. They don't seem to have any proposals what happens if this is the case.

The problem is that I now am anxious that the proposed solution will not work and so this no doubt will make my BP even worse. Seems like a double-edged sword???!!!

Has anyone had any similar problems and any other solutions???

Cheers

MikeL2

Mike - Relaxation techniques can sometimes help to control high blood pressure caused by stress. It might be worth your while talking to a hypnotherapist or starting yoga to learn to manage situations like that.

Hi Kendall

<" I have the opposite reaction to white coat stress. I figure if I'm going to have a problem I'm in the right place.">

I completely agree with you and in no way do I fear going to hospitals or doctors. At least conciously that is. Maybe it is a subconcious thing that has manifested itself very recently. I have to confess that I have never truly been able to relax with things medical but I have never been stressed about it either. Like you I know that I am in the right place.

Thanks for your interest.

I just had my routine appointment. The blood pressure machine tried twice to get mine, and still didn't work. Squished the hell out of my arm. When the nurse gave up and took it manually, it was 110/7?, but my pulse rate was 100, which I'm sure was caused by having the circulation nearly cut off in my arm for a short period of time.

Yes, you can get into a loop of "my blood pressure was high before, I'm worried it will happen again" so it's high again. You'd be surprised how easy it is to affect your own readings. It doesn't take fear, just anxiety, and most of us feel at least a little anxiety when we go to the doctor's office. Maybe ask them to check your BP again when you leave?

Our dentists office now has a policy of taking BP at each appointment. (We have coverage for quarterly cleaning and polishing) My pressure is just fine, except when I go in there to get 'em shined up. I don't feel the least bit of fear or anxiety about it. I consider the hygienist who does me to be nice people, a family friend. So why the heck 20, 30, or more points higher than any other time?

Mine finally came down to 98/60

Anyone know why I'm having painful frequent urges to pee?

Sorry... couldn't resist. >;-)

Welllllll, right off the top of my head, I'd say it was the BP meds. Mine do it for me.

It's quite common for BP medication to include a diuretic - these work by making you pee more, thus getting rid of more salt from your system. It shouldn't be painful, though - maybe you have an infection?

Hi Jeri

You are right.....to a point. You can influence your BP by various ways of unstressing yourself. EG deep breathing, thinking of calm things etc.

However we have tried all these things, they work OK until I go either to the Doctor's or to the Hospital. Once there , there is no way that any of these work for me. The Hospital even put a small dark room at my disposal where I could try out these techniques...but no go....my BP just spurts up.

Last week I went to my GP where he measured me at 199/95. I measured myself at 125/69 before I went and 122/71 ten minutes later at home. (yes we have had my monitor checked out and it is accurate).

I used to poo poo this idea of White coat syndrome" but now to me it is real. the object now is to try to get around this so that I can have the surgery that I need.

Hi Frogprince

Most people feel uncomfortable when visiting medical or dental places. It is normal.

10 or 20 points is fairly normal too. The medics expect this and allow for it when taking your BP.

However mine goes way up by 70/80 points or more and in these circumstances the eye surgeons just will not operate because of dangers of the eye "exploding". Yes this is their word !!!!

I wouldn't be too concerned about your increase, but if it goes much higher it could be worrisome.

I stress that in my normal situation my BP is OK and it is no problem other than the huge increase when I go to the Doc's or hospital.

Regards

MikeL2

I take Amlodipine and Ramipril.Initially, I took just Amlodipine in 10 mg doses, but I got terribly swollen legs ,and had to have dieuretics. Then my doctor reduced the Amlodipine to 5mg ,plus 5mg of Ramipril, and now everything's fine and the sewlling's gone too.

Working on cars, building boxes and digging 10 potatoes is not cardio.

I think thee are probably 101 car mechanics, joiners and gardeners who would disagree with you! Anything physical can and often will increase your heart rate. A decent medical practitioner will tell you that any form of exercise can and will increase your heart rate - And if you can increase it a little for a long tine it is better than short bursts of high intensity.

MikeL - If yoga doesn't suit - Try Tai Chi and/or Chi Gung.

Cheers

My P.T. would disagree with that....especially when you go at a slow enough rate not to increase your heart rate to the necessary levels to consider it "cardio" work out.

And up jumped the
devil.

A through investigation uncovered the culprit. My wrist monitor can not deal with my atrial fibrillation. It keeps giving false readings.
My Doctor checked it today and his cuff gave a normal reading while mine was higher than a hawks nest.

hi bubbly

I too am on Amlopidine but I was started on the 10mg dose. I am also on Ramipril and until recently was on 5mg. During the problems I mentioned below I had my Ramipril upped to 10mg.

Initially I did experience some slight swelling of the ankles but this soon subsided after my body got used to the medication.

More recently in an effort to attack the "whitecoat syndrome" I was put on 2.5mg tablets of Indapamide which is a diuretic or water tablet. The doctor explained that these are a new formula and type of diuretics and that I should not be too much troubled by having to pee constantly. I have to say that as far as the peeing goes I have not noticed any read difference - in fact I think there is a slight improvement in that I am not having to get up in the night as much; in fact on the last three or four nights I have not had to get up at all. I am not sure how this works because diuretics are supposed to remove the salt from your system by passing water. If I am not going as much am I not passing as much salt??

It does reduce my BP so I guess it is working.

There is a slight side effect in that at this stage it makes me feel light headed and a little dizzy at times. The Doc says this is not unusual and should pass after a while.

This is needed only in the short term until I can get this **** "whitecoat syndrome" situation under control and get the surgery I need.

Regards

MikeL2

It's a family thing. The wrist cuff doesn't work on me because my heart beat is so faint it can't detect it. Even the nurses have a difficult time hearing my diastolic pressure.

So let me get this straight...Kendall went apeshit when his blood pressure went apeshit and probably drove poor Jacqui to distraction. BUT the cuff didn't work so his BP was just fine.
Kendall! Cellar! And unless you have lab verified symptoms of bubonic plague or mushroom poisoning I do not want to hear another peep out of you!
Stop looking up symptoms on line or you will next discover that you are pregnant!

Not to worry; I won't be sharing anymore such information.

This reminds me of poor old Lizzie Gardner who told her daughter. "Don't go to the Doctor, he might tell you you have cancer.

Just before I was to be released from the ER, the Supervising Doctor came in and asked me if I had any questions. I said, "What is the air speed of an unladen Swallow"? he snapped back, "African or European"?
He shook my hand and said, "It's a pleasure to meet you".

I've had an unhappy day and didn't feel like cooking; Jacqui, same thing, so we went out to a Chinese buffet. Suddenly the lights went dim and in walked MR. CREOSOTE! I said to Jacqui, "I hope they don't skimp on the pate'". Poor guy must have weighed 400 pounds and I don't kid you.
