In Japan there are cafés where patrons can walk off the street and cuddle with a cat: Click here for report

"Osaka, Japan - Japanese love animals, but pets are often forbidden by landlords of the tiny flats where most people dwell.

The solution: cafés where pet-less patrons pay $11 an hour to hang out in a room full of felines.Cat cafés are proliferating in Japan, serving up friendship for the lonely and curious - albeit briefly. "

Our two cats might well enjoy such employment.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

my building doesn't forbid cats, but I have so many shelves of stuff (I remember watching a friend's Siamese walking around her china cabinet when she forgot to lock the door!) that I choose not to have a cat, so I have Tabby Next Door

I don't have pets because I'm often gone, and I wouldn't want to leave them. I like dogs, I like cats, I like most critters*, although I've never really wanted a pet tarantula. (But I'd pet-sit for one.) I have vicarious pets, and I enjoy them very much. And no, SINS, Alice belongs with you. ;-) There's something comforting about pets, and I know there have been studies (too lazy to go look for them) on how they lower stress and blood pressure, and patients with chronic pain feel less when petting a dog or cat.

*Have had pet rats, mice, cats, a dog, lizards, and enjoyed hand-feeding wild birds and chipmunks. And fish, but I won't count fish because you can't hold them in your hand or let them sit on your lap... at least not for long.

From Three Kitties Set Out to Sea:

Flying fish, a dainty dish,
As dainty a dish as you might wish
Upon the Seven Seas!

Sandra, you can't be in Sydney, 'cause that's my father-in-law's cat, and he's here in Michigan. : )

I just couldn't imagine not having a cat (or several) around the house. I've never been without one in my entire life. If I get up in the night not feeling too well, there they are in their snug bed in the kitchen, pleased to see me and ready to rub their little heads on mine. So comforting and calming. The only downside is when they grow old and pass away. That's something I find almost impossible to bear. The grief is terrible, as anyone with pets will know.

We do love our little furry friends.

One of my mother's children's books The Cat at Night has now been translated into Japanese and Mandarin Chinese. Her own cat Grendel was a 5 year old shelter cat that she adopted 8 years ago.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I like other people's cats, but could never have one in the house.
I feel the same about babies ;)

Very sad that we've become so separated from other species, as in 'No Dogs/Cat Allowed!' etc..

I take my litte Jenny with me everywhere and if shopkeepers growl at me about taking her in their shop, I growl back and tell them it's OK, for my dog doesn't like them either..and...they've just lot a sale and a lifetime customer...hit 'em where it hurts..

I'd LOVE to open a cafe where dogs are allowed and absolutely welcomed, with Jenny serving behind the bar. :0)

BEST hotel I ever stayed in had a mud-covered Afghan Hound behind their bar and in their restaurant too where he'd hang out amongst the guests, along with Morgan the Billy Goat, who drank beer from a bottle, his hooves on the bar, and ate peanuts and pork scratchings with the wrappers still on.... :0)

Maybe there should be a "Catastrophic Café" where cats can congregate and commiserate with one another about the horrible abuse they incur (sorry dog-lovers) from sharing living quarters with humans.

Our two felines are never pleased when we go off to musical special events, leaving them behind in the gentle care of our neighbor. He's the one who's responsible for infesting them with fleas last summer, or so they claim.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

My old neighbour next door to our last house used to look at my Minty and Murphy (two brothers) and sigh, saying, "Those two would make a lovely pair of furry mittens!" But she loved them really, and gave them best ham intended for her husband's sandwiches.
