Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: DonMeixner Date: 28 Oct 99 - 12:33 PM Being blessed with a very good memory I often find myself on the edge of trouble. Arguing constantly about arcane points and who said what to whom. I also find myself witout anyone to play trivial pursuit with. I once lost a friend over who the first 7 Dr. Whos where. Even threw in Peter Cushing as the Dr. from an early film. Constant note taking and post-its would drive me nuts. Too much equipment is needed. Pens, pencils, additional paper. Then it all has to be stored somewhere. I can imagine The Muse driving down the highway leaving a trail of yellow squares behind her as the wiper pushes them off her windshield. Don |
Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: Art Thieme Date: 28 Oct 99 - 11:52 AM Margarita, At least I'm good for something. Muse, If you've got to put post-it notes on your "frig" (as you said) you're in worse shape than me even... Alas, if it wasn't for humor, the corned beef would never get all fuzzy and green! Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: Margo Date: 28 Oct 99 - 10:50 AM On the serious side, my fuzzy mindedness was a thyroid problem. My doc (naturopath) tested my blood and found a number of levels that were off. I was borderline anemic (sic) among other things. His priscribed treatments, herbs and vitimins, have helped tremendously. Don't ignore that side of it. Other than that, Art, you crack me up! Margarita |

I am known for them - all over my desk at work, the frig at home, the front door, my car, hanging out of my purse. . . .I also have a pad of them and a pen in my car, in my pruse, in the nitestand by the bed, on the kitchen counter, at work, by the phone. You name it I've got a sicky note near by just waiting to help me remember what to do next. The only draw back - I haven't yet figured out how to keep them ready in the shower for notes and still make them stick. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: Art Thieme Date: 27 Oct 99 - 06:29 PM Before it was just the first lines of songs that were my problem. If I got those right I was off to the races and generally got through the longest ballad with no mistakes---even ones I'd not sung recently. So I made a large notebook with the first lines to ALL thew songs I sang. Now, though, recent memory problems are a part of the infirmity I'm saddled with---or so my neurologist at Mayo tells me. Says it ain't Alz..i..rs---positively. (Don't wanna print out that word. Too heinous.) With that assurance from a fine doc, I'm able to feel lots better. Art |
Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: sophocleese Date: 27 Oct 99 - 05:18 PM Those wonderful malaprop moments. I usually refer to gapped memory as Neural Net Failure, at least I think I do. Part of depression for me was standing in a room holding something and wondering what I was doing with it. So much that I would normally not think about twice disappeared as fast as words written on water. Now I'm getting better but I often have to ask the kids where I put my glasses. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: Little Neophyte Date: 27 Oct 99 - 04:27 PM Lao Tsu was a very insightful person Neil. Trying to teach others to live in the present moment. We are constantly being told 'don't dwell in the past' and 'do not worry about the future' When we are younger, we need to data bank information. It is part of our earlier stages of growth. But as we grow older, we do not need to accumulate or remember so much information. In fact, it can hinder our growth. We will gain more knowledge and insight from a clear mind; one that isn't cluttered with activity. So, I think all you guys are on the right track! Little Neo

Most people will answer to "Hey, how 'ya been". They know their names right?

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: katlaughing Date: 27 Oct 99 - 12:42 PM LMAO, Art! In some sort of cosmic synergy, while I was posting how our brains are like computers, we lost power and I lost the whole posting. Now, I have to do it FROM MEMORY! Aaarrggghhhh!! I am center-aged at 46. I make a dialy list to help me remember important things that needs to be done or taken care of. I've always done this. I think as we get older, we juts have so much more in our brains to remember. Our brains are like computers, they take in everything we see, hear, say and read, without discrimination; they take it all literally. So, sometimes we, may have memory overload and a little downtime while the system reboots. My dad at 82, remembers tons of songs, literally hundreds if not thousands. He cna quote conversations verbatim he had with his dad as a kid and reams of the classics, poetry and prose. He always keeps up on the latestnews and politics, so keeps his mind agile. I think hehas learned to somehow filter what is important to him to remember, somehow leaving the rest by the door as Peter wishes to do. Maybe that is a secret only revealed wihtmore age?*g* Scientists just discoverd that the brain can regenerate itself, create new cells, so we may all be able to "create" our own new motherboards, someday, if we can remember how! katlaughingforsure

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (Oct 28) From: Vixen Date: 27 Oct 99 - 11:36 AM LMAO-- It's so reassuring to read that others are experiencing this phenomenon...I have experienced all of the above and more besides. I'm 42, and I have to put things in specific places every time I use them, or I don't find them again for ages. I own 4 watches, because I can only do without for so long before I go buy a new one, only to find the one(s) I lost about a month later. All I can say about this is that it takes me longer to lose four watches than to lose one. I have come to the conclusion now that I can only keep track of x number of items, So now when I find something I mislaid, I immediately experience a sinking sensation of dread as I contemplate what item I must have just mislaid, and hope it's not more important than what I've just found.
