My wife laughed, but was appropriately appalled at the Netflix update to the thread...

I, on the other hand, was fascinated by seeing two replies after that that seemed to not notice the update, but were still replying to the original post. *grin* Needs to be a word for "knee jerk replies" (Not that the replies were uninteresting, and certainly not stupid...they just reflect the hurry we get in trying to cope with information overload)

(I have wished for years that there would be an automatic red **update**
added to any any thread that is refreshed more than, say, 2 months after its last post.)

Shopping carts, phone apps...these can be irritating, sure. But there are times people do things so outrageously brainless that I long for a more bitter word than 'stupid.'

For example: a young woman just drove her car into running floodwaters, drowning herself and her 4-year-old son. Here in the Midwest, TV, radio, weathercasters, and the National Weather Service tell people again and again not to do that. Where was her brain?

A little girl known to the public as LP was rescued from her abusive (half-crazy) mother, who'd locked her in a closet and hardly fed herfor several years. LP went to Children's Hospital for a good while, then was given to a foster family. The doctors told the family to keep her calorie intake under 1800 a day, because her body was not yet ready to process large amounts of food.

The foster family ignored that, and LP was taken to McDonald's etc and allowed to eat far more than 1800 a day. The result: LP has been sent to St Louis and has had to have a heart transplant, because her foster parents thought they knew more than pediatricians.

We need a word for people who weren't just born stupid, they are bound and determined to be stupid.

Full grown stupidity is posting a link without telling us WHAT THE HELL IT IS.

Why is that stupid?

For one, it is not wise to follow a link to an unknown destination. You could end up is one of those endless pawn loops and have to shut your machine down to escape.

Two, most of us have better things to do than bother following an unknown link. If you really want us to go there, have the courtesy to tell us something about it.

My smartphone had a pretty good SatNav that I pay a little for a month. On new years eve I was taking my daughter somewhere and discovered that they had disabled it entirely and I had to upgrade to a new improved version - discovered 10mins before I left, naturally. I also discovered the link they provided didn't work on my Brand of smartphone.

All of that is everyday irritation, not full grown stupidity.

No, the stupidity comes from the new enhanced features, which first of all removed some of the useful SatNav features, but added in for example a Twitter feed. Hello? You think it a good idea to post live TwitterNoise in front of people while they are driving? Even though I can turn it off, I don't really want the people who are too stupid to disable it in cars coming towards me, thank you.

I didn't say the machine made an error, Don. ;-) I said it made a decision...one that was no doubt pre-programmed, therefore devoid of any conscious volition or intelligence to bring to bear on the problem. Machines, as you pointed out, don't normally make errors...unless they're malfunctioning in some respect. Nevertheless they end up doing many things that seriously annoy millions of people. This isn't the fault of the machines. It's the fault of business practices that use machines to replace people, and assume that that will take care of everything "just fine" (and save them having to pay a whole bunch of salaries to living human beings!). Your bank, your grocery store, and every other business around you is looking for ways to expand on that idea and lay off their human staff, if at all possible.

This would be nice if there were good jobs available for their human staff. Often, there are very few such jobs around. They've been taken by the machines...or sent to Asia.

The thing about machines.... They don't ask for any overtime pay. They don't complain about poor working conditions. They don't expect pensions or medical care or civil rights or anything. They don't think! Is it any surprise how popular they've become with management? ;-) It's like having slaves who don't even know they're slaves and who work till they die. Very handy. People are much more difficult to control.

Maybe management should just eliminate 98% of humanity, and have the other 2% live in absolute luxury, served by uncomplaining machines? Hmmm. Sounds like a good plan for the elite to start working on, eh?

Now, how could it be arranged? That's the question.

In my experience, every error by a machine since computers were invented has been a result of "Firmware Input Thrombosis", which occurs whenever there is a static clot at the keyboard.

I set up my laptop so that it doesn't update automatically. I did manual update a little while ago and the stupid effing morons at Microsoft decided that this update should override my decision.

This afternoon I set up the laptop with Netflix so that Kylea could watch a cartoon while I was fixing lunch.

And Uberdumm Microsoft started an update. I had to stop making lunch and it took half an hour to get back to the cartoon.

And the person who designed that is probably long since gone to his just rewards; that's a pretty old design.

Kelly bought a new electric stove. Great big oven with a light and a glass window in the door.

Now the whole purpose of a glass door is to see your cooking, so what do these moron designers do? They put TINTED GLASS in the door. So that everything you see in the oven is a dull grey. A great help when you are looking to see if those cookies are just starting to turn golden at the edges.

I've always really enjoyed seeing 'Little Hawk' on the list of posters, and hurried to see what you've said, as you're always so considered, interesting, fair and informative. In reply to your points, I don't feel we in UK are tormented by 'deeply suppressed anger and rancorous bitterness'. "Tosser" is another popular UK term for it, means exactly the same thing as as "wanker". And another is "prat". Still more, "stupid git". Then again, "pillock" seems to have a bit of a following as well. And there's also "wassock", a related term. Deeply suppressed anger and rancorous bitterness are, after all, essential features of the British culture nowadays, perhaps because there is a surveillance camera mounted on every street corner, the government does whatever it bloody well wants to, regardless of popular disapproval, and the cost of living is far too high, and all these nasty little words such as "tosser", "wanker", and "useless git" serve well to help exorcise (or is that "exercise"?) those pent-up feelings of impotent rage and frustration one may experience in difficult times.

Bit of a rum go, isn't it? Bit of a sticky wicket! We in "the colonies" can only sympathize with your plight...and watch sadly from afar.

Henry, that's an insanitary health biohazard. If it happened here (which I seriously doubt) people would immediately inform the manager of the store, and the trolley would be withdrawn and disinfected thoroughly. The only supermarkets I know of in the US that use the coin method for returning carts is the Aldi chain, which, I believe, is a German company.

Aldi offers rock-bottom prices and they have several methods of keeping expenses low:

1. You generally don't get a choice of brands of anything. For each item, there is usually only one brand, which might be the store brand or a brand you never see advertised.

2. All their fresh produce is packaged. You don't get to sort through a pile of fruit and pick the best-looking pieces. You can only take a bag, and some of the pieces in the bag will be less than perfect. That means the skin may be discolored or scarred or lumpy but the edible part is wholesome.

3. They don't give you free bags. You either bring your own bags or buy theirs. The bags they offer for sale are sturdy and reusable. They don't bag your stuff for you, either.

4. They tend to be located in the poorer, low-rent sections of town, adjoining a strip mall that has seen better days.

Them people, Bee-Dub, just can't believe that the world ain't arranged ONLY to suit their own exclusive convenience...cos they are Number 1 in the world as they see it. Life as they know it revolves around THEM. In my younger days, I spent a few years working in the grocery business. Since I also drove an old pickup truck, I was frequently drafted to help the store manager retrieve shopping carts that neighborhood pedestrian shoppers had taken home and not returned. I think "stolen" is the operative term. Most of the offenders would apologize for not returning the cart, but occasionally one or two would get all hot and bothered because we were taking "their" carts. Then we got to explain to them that not only did the cart belong to the store, but it's replacement cost was $125 (probably more like $400 nowadays) which meant they had committed grand larceny by even having it on their property. Then we'd politely ask if they'd rather we take it now or come back later with a sheriff's deputy? I seem to remember the most common reply being something along the lines of "Take the (insert expletive of your choice) thing and get off my (insert another expletive of your choice) property!"

Nope. Simple fact is (and *I* have complained about such MANY times on threads in Mudcat for years about this crap) it is a pet peeve of GREAT contention for me. These comlpete twits had no brain when they decided to go to the grocery store. It seems few people have any good manners any more. I TOO often ask myself, "Do these idiots drive cars on the roadways too!!?"

Even more burdensome is when they block the entire aisle (one person -one cart!) and then say sorry when they walk in front of my 86 year old almost blind mother at the last second. I sometimes hang back, as she is hard of hearing and say, "No. yer NOT sorry. Yer ignorant and rude. Don't be sorry, just don't treat other people rudely. Have a nice day."

The odd time, they say something like, "Well! Excuse me!" I think you can guess what I reply in such circumstances.

Ever try to negotiate a grocery store in a wheelchair?

In one aspect, shopping carts are not a problem because I'm my own shopping cart.

But from my own observations, a large part of the problem is that, after the store has provided shopping carts for peoples' convenience, most people are too damned lazy to take the cart back into the store for someone else to use. They pile the stuff in their cars and leave the shopping cart sitting there in the parking lot for other people to steer around or back over.

Some stores put the shopping cart frame outside in the parking lot near the door, but people still can't be bothered to return the cart to the frame.

As far as seat belts for children on the carts, IF the person returns the cart to its rightful place, THEY could take a few seconds to make sure the belts don't get tangled with the other carts.

Contemplate for a moment how much of a hassle shopping carts are for a store.

Many customers are not exactly the shiniest dimes in the till.

Case in point:    I'm in my electric wheelchair (capable of 6.5 mph, which is a fair jogging speed) moving down the aisle of a supermarket, heading toward a particular section of the store at a pretty fair walking speed when some gink behind me decides I'm not moving fast enough for him. So he tries to shove past me. But there isn't quite room for a passing lane in the aisle.

I wasn't aware he was there until one of my power wheels ran over his foot!

He did quite a little dance, holding the foot with the tire mark across the instep in two hands while he hopped up and down on his other foot and howled!

I was tempted to applaud.

If the trolley corrals have rough flooring (they don't necessarily in the UK, thought the entrance of them likely will), it's so that the store doesn't have to worry about slope i.e. it's primarily to stop carelessly parked trolleys following gravity & rolling wheresoever they will. The managers have to estimate the expected profit against expenses and expected loss. They may be wrong with their estimate, or erroneously neglect some factors (which may qualify as stupid), or neglect their duty altogether, but I do not think any non-insider can tell for sure.

Homeless people love those carts, and the managers' sense of charity tends to have limits.

Once I went to my local supermarket when it was very busy and there were NO shopping carts in the vestibule, where carts are normally stored. Instead, there were several customers standing around waiting for a store employee to round up more carts from the parking lot and bring them into the store.

I thought, "fuck this" and I went out into the parking lot, grabbed the nearest cart, and pushed it into the store. I passed by those same customers who were still waiting (and looking mighty dumb, if you ask me).

Then it occurred to me: Why don't we always do this? I have to walk from my car into the store anyway, and it takes practically no more effort to push a cart while I walk than to walk without one. So now, when I park my car, if I happen to see a stray cart nearby, one that some lazy customer has neglected to park in the "cart corral," I will push it into the store. That way, I always have a cart. Plus, I have saved a store employee a bit of trouble. Plus, I have cleared a parking space for some other driver. Plus, I have gotten a little bit more exercise, which I need anyway.

If everybody did this all the time, the store wouldn't have to pay an employee to round up carts in the parking lot, and it would be able to sell food a little bit cheaper. And stores like the Arc wouldn't need to worry about people pushing carts into the parking lot and leaving them there.

I went shopping 2 days ago.... yep, aisle blocked by two women chatting.

The local grocery stores I go to have decided that 'some' lost or damaged carts are preferable to expensive locking systems.... and 'most' people return the carts to outside storage spots scattered about the parking lots. Very few carts are taken off the lots, as it is just too far for most to walk home. I do see carts in large shopping centers abandoned WAY at the other end from their home store... I suppose those employees who work till closing have to collect them.

How big are your thrift stores? I believe our local equivalent is charity shops, but I have never seen one of those big enough to need trolleys, in fact in most the layout would render trolleys useless.

The arm attached to the trolley must be a blasted nuisance just making your way around the store, never mind getting outside. I quite agree that any trolley you cannot take to the car park is of very limited use.

Don't know what to suggest as a solution. Maybe if a your stores took up the coin idea (which does work widely in the UK and the rest of Europe) they could persuade those in the States that a $1 coin has its uses after all.

As for a word, well FARK.com use a 'Florida' tag for some pretty dumb stories, but I don't think that is your state, and I couldn't see you embracing the tag even if it were appropriate;)

Things I hate about shopping carts:

1) They're required to have safety belts for children who ride in the little fold-out upper basket thingies. That's good from the standpoint of children versus concussions, but the belts and their snaps get all tangled up with other carts when they're nested together. Before you can pull your shopping cart from the stockpile, you usually have to disentangle it from its neighbor.

2) Most modern stores use some sort of rough surface material (cobbles, flagstones, corrugated stiff carpeting) in the area where empty shopping carts are kept. This is done so that you can't quickly evaluate the cart's performance. You don't know if it has a wheel with a flat spot or if it pulls to one side or the other until you've negotiated the roughly floored area and rolled onto the smooth main floor. By then, you're fifty feet from the cart storage area and, if you've drawn a bum cart, you have to decide whether to turn around and swap it out or to just live with it.

3) It's not the shopping carts' fault, but most of the people who operate them are idiots. The idea that an unattended shopping cart in the middle of an aisle might somehow obstruct other people's ability to traverse said aisle seems to be beyond the cart operators' conceptual skills. And when two morons who haven't seen each other in ages happen to meet in a grocery store aisle and decide to have a mini-family/high school reunion on the spot, just forget about doing any shopping on that aisle. Go on to the next one and come back after the two morons, their two shopping carts, and accompanying six children have finished their gabfest and moved on elsewhere.

BTW, there is a high-tech solution to the carts-leaving-premises problem Bert's thrift store decided to solve by making it impossible to push the carts through the doorway. Some stores' carts are equipped with electronically activated brakes which immobilize carts taken beyond certain perimeter points. Probably not something a thrift store could afford at this time but, hey, that kinda stuff gets cheaper every day.

But don't you have the coin system over there? Here in UK we put a £1 coin in the trolley-slot which releases it from the one in front. You trundle around, pay, take it out to your car, then return it to a little shelter thing, where a key on a chain can release your pound. No-one leaves their trolley lying around outside 'cos they want their pound back. Sorted!

They do the same thing at my thrift store.
They don't want to have to go get them from the parking lot.

I know I said this before on the Delta Airlines thread, but we need a word that means more than stupid.

This time I am talking about shopping carts. Now shopping carts are a great invention, they allow us to pile up a load more purchases than we can carry. I know I do it all the time; I wheel the cart out to my car and unload it. Some times I even get my wife to load another cart so that we can carry twice as much.

Today I went into the local Thrift Store, The Arc in Colorado Springs.

And they just qualified for the more than stupid award. They have attached long arms to the sides of their carts so that customers can't take them out of the doors. By this action they have completely destroyed the whole usefulness of the shopping cart.

Now I can't load the cart with more than I can carry because if I do, then I can't get my purchases to my car.

As I said, we need a word that means more than stupid.

So, you idiots who are in charge of The Arc in Colorado Springs, if you don't trust me with your shopping cart in your parking lot, then why the hell should I visit your store again?
