a friend sent me a link to some short Jewish Winter Solstice Tales and although we are now between solstices, I thought I'd best share the link now while I have it to hand.
https://telshemesh.org/tevet/jewish_winter_solstice_tales.html

I read on the homepage that Tel Shemesh means "Hill of the sun" and that it "is a web resource for those who are attempting to integrate Jewish faith and practice with earth-based beliefs and ways of living. Tel Shemesh provides writings, rituals, songs, prayers, and myths that integrate Jewish texts with earth-based images like the Divine feminine and the sacred earth, in order to promote an inclusive vision of a Judaism entwined with nature and with all life."

For many people the end of the Mayan calendar suggested not the end of the world, but rather the end of an old era of trouble and strife and the beginning of a new era of peace and harmony.

Turn Of The Century
by J Fred Knobloch & Dan Tylor
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Vol. 2" 1989

There'll be flyin' boats and condos with moats
Cultivated oceans; floatin' cities in the sky
Livin' underneath our bubble; no more toil and trouble
Singin' 'bout that sweet old by and by

We'll all have lots of money that we won't have to spend
You'll be given everything and everyone's your friend
Hangin' out together in picture-perfect weather
This time 'round the party never ends

We won't have no TV preachers to ask how much we gave
We won't need no TV preachers; see, by then, we'll all be saved
No more fightin' for our country; no child will go hungry
We'll be smilin' from the cradle to the grave

CHORUS:
Hallelujah! I can't wait to see it
Hallelujah! Come on and go with me
Let me show you just how great life's gonna be
At the turn, at the turn of the century

Since this is not a BS thread, anybody got any good new Solstice songs (or songs about planetary alignments or songs about the Mayan calendars)?

21 minutes to go here. When the world ends on a particular date, at a particular time, does it end in time-zone-sized wedges around the globe until the whole green and blue grapefruit has disappeared?

Congratulations on your grandchild, Joe.

Just FTR, it's still 21st Dec in Caracol (center of Mayan civilisation) , and will be for the next 6 plus hours, so there is still plenty of time for the comet to hit ...

What's the joke I heard about all the people predicting the end of the world like there's no tomorrow?
Now it's cold and windy and rainy, so I'm sure glad we had our solstice bonfire under the stars last night. It was such a lovely evening.
I'm off to Sacramento to celebrate my son's adopting a daughter. That makes me a grandfather for the first time!

I `ad that astro-ologer in my cab yesterday morning. I once saw him reading palms in the interval when we did that Singers Club in London. `e told Bob Davenport that `e was going on a long journey but I know `ed `eard that Bob was booked up in Newcastle in the week.
`e said, "Morning Jim, could you take me up to `yde Park, please. We`re `aving a winding up Solstice meeting".
I said, "What`s up then, Jupiter?. Winding up?. You all on the cusp or something?"
`e said, "Nah Jim. It`s the Mayan calender. Its finishes on the 21st. We`re all for the chop tomorrow. I assume I get a free ride?"
I said, " Look `ere Jupe. First you pay for the fare, and second, all that happened in South America those many years ago was that the geezer writing it down ran out of chalk!!"

Whaddam I Like??

Looks like Saturn and Venus are aligned, and Mercury nearly with them. Also Neptune and Mars come close (to each other and to Mercury, not to the other two or the sun). And I note with joy that Pluto has not been expunged from Guest999's map. I really felt for the old snowball when I heard it had been demoted.

We'll be doing it with Old Glory Molly at the Geldeston Locks Inn on the Norfolk side of the River Waveney. These pictures (from 2006) should give you some idea of what it will be like.

Tomorrow - not sure about the GMT, is Winter Solstice 2012.

We'll be getting the evergreens in and lighting candles as well as having a minor feasty. If possible we'll light a small fire in the garden too.

I rather like this Tull album, albeit it's not one of their best:

There's only one star in the solar system....the sun!

There are no planetary alignments (other than the annual alignment between the sun, the earth and the approximate centre of the galaxy that occurs every December). Various planetary alignments occurred in 1962, 1982 and 2000 but there's nothing of any significance over the next couple of decades, and even if there was it would have no noticable effect on the earth.

I'm planning to go to a party on 22nd, myself!
